I’d like to dedicate this post to my brother, Lawrence, who encouraged me to try Kefir and well, the rest is history!

Recently, I’ve gotten some questions and comments regarding my latest addiction–Kefir. To tell you the truth, I didn’t know much about the product until researching it to post on here–I simply liked the taste! However, finding out all of it’s health benefits has simply encouraged me to drink it s’more, if that’s even possible!

First things first, I’m not exactly sure how to pronounce it. All along, I’ve been pronouncing it KEE-fir….like Keifer Sutherland. Some people pronounce it keh-FEAR. Who knows…it’s amazing either way and it’s NOTHING to fear :)

What is it?

Kefir is a fermented milk product (sounds funky but so are yogurt and cheese!) that originated from the Caucasus Mountains many centuries ago. It is made by adding milk to kefir grains, composed of bacteria and yeast.

What does it taste like?

The taste and texture of kefir resemble drinkable yogurt. It’s natural flavor is tart, however, it can be sweetened by adding honey, fruit, stevia and/or other sweeteners. You can also purchase kefir already sweetened.

Health Benefits:

Aids digestion and cleanses the intestinal tract: Kefir contains many different strains of beneficial bacteria and yeast, not commonly found in yogurt, that promote a healthy digestive system. Thus, it is considered a probiotic beverage. Lifeway (the brand shown in the photo below) contains 10 probiotic cultures, five times the amount found in most yogurts. ‘It also helps to colonize the intestinal bacteria and contains good yeasts that help to penetrate the intestinal wall. This penetration not only eliminates any so-called “bad yeasts” present, but also guards against parasites and helps to promote good digestion.’ It is easily digestible so it is great for those with digestive disorders although it can be beneficial for everyone (Source).

Calming effect: Kefir contains an essential amino acid, tryptophan, that has a relaxing effect on the nervous system. This can help with anxiety, ADHD, and sleep disorders (Source). If you have trouble falling asleep, it may help to drink some kefir before bed.

Increased immunity: ‘It has also been found that kefir is an effective immune stimulant and antimicrobial against a wide variety of harmful gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (Source).’ Kefir provides the body with many vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enxymes. Most notable are vitamin B2, B12, vitamin K, vitamin D, vitamin A, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous.

Great for those who are lactose intolerant: Kefir contains the enzyme necessary to digest lactose, making it easier to digest for those who are lactose intolerant (Source).

Read more about how kefir can help with many other health issues, including but not limited to immune deficiency, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), autoimmune disorders, seasonal allergies, infantile colic, high cholesterol, bad breath, yeast infections, antibiotic diarrhea, and traveler’s diarrhea.

For those of you watching your weight, Kefir is also low in carbs and high in protein. In addition, it has been shown to decrease food cravings.

You can make your own kefir by purchasing grains online and fermenting it with milk, soy milk, or even water. I’ve been looking into doing this because I’m drinking it in rather large quantities nowadays :) So far, I’ve enjoyed it in my smoothies, with cereal and all by itself!

YUM! I love kefir!

The Turkish (basically where it’s from) pronounce it the second way, so basically the keh-fear.

I need to try this stuff! I saw it a LOT when I lived in the US but it’s not so easily come by here. Have you ever tried Yakult? For some reason, I imagine it tastes similar?..

Thanks for the props!! There’s nothing like organic, grass-fed kefir for amazing skin. I’m going to go broke if I keep downing 32-oz of kefir a day. I’m on a mission to perfect my own batch.

Ah, thank you thank you for filling me in on Kefir! I’ve been dying to know all about it. I think my MIL might drink this or at least something very similar. I always thought it was just some weird Russian thing though. Haha, guess I wasn’t giving her enough credit, she is smarter than I thought! :)

Okay PS!

I just asked the hubby and apparently this IS in fact a Russian drink. HUGE in Russia actually! Basically, it’s a healthy buttermilk and most properly pronouned Key-FEAR.

Wow, I feel so enlightened. I ALWAYS wondered what this strange substance was in their fridge and now I know all about it!

I just had to share this with you darling.

Oh and I forgot to tell you….

Hope you are having a wonderful week beautiful!

Sounds like kefir’s even better than yogurt. This lady’s post may be helpful for you when you intend to make your own:

I have got to try Kefir! I can’t believe I haven’t yet! I am definitely going to pick some up next time I’m at the store. It sounds like the perfect addition to green smoothies! Even those grains look yummy! I wonder if you can eat those…

I love it when westerners get so crazed over things that are so trivial to us :)
