Paincakes

My ability to eat went out the window today after a visit to the dentist!! I went in for a check-up/cleaning and the 2 cavities I had from last time were still there. My dentist always says ‘we’ll take care of it next time’ as if they’ll go away (?!?). But today, he finally had the time to fill them so I said a reluctant ‘okay’ as I surrendered my life ability to eat.

I got not one but TWO horrendously painful shots of novocaine, one on EACH side of my upper gums. He went a little bit low so my entire tongue was numb and I could barely talk. I definitely had a lisp and started drooling when I was talking on the phone to my BFF, Katherine. Attraaaaactive!!

Before getting my poor little toothies drilled I had a Multigrain Butternut Squash Banana Pancake Breakfast for one! Say that 5 times fast!!!

My pancakes basking in the morning sunshine :)

I made the pancake batter from scratch using these ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup Rolled oats (ground to a flour consistency)
  • 1 Egg white
  • 1/6 cup of Whole wheat pastry flour (the mysterious bag in the photo)
  • 1/2 cup Butternut squash puree (leftover from muffin making)
  • 1 tsp Pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup Water (didn’t have milk!)
  • Stevia

IMG_7269.JPG

I used my Magic Bullet to grind the rolled oats (YES, I brought this guy home with me for the weekend. Very necessary.)

IMG_7268.JPG

The batter! I could have popped this in the microwave for some oat bran-like porridge….

IMG_7272.JPG

But I didn’t.

IMG_7274.JPG

TA DA!!!

IMG_7275.JPG

I topped the 4 pancakes (can you spot the 4th pancake!?!?) with pumpkin butter, agave nectar, almond butter drizzle, and some berries for perty-ness!!

IMG_7279.JPG

With a side of glowing honey dew and papaya!

All together now:

Then came the death of my mouth for a span of 5 hours. I got out of the dentist’s office expecting to be starving but had absolutely no appetite. My mouth was in so. much. pain. and I was dizzy and had a massive migraine (?) It felt like I had surgery or something!! I couldn’t OPEN my mouth. It was that bad.

So I chatted mumbled with my parents while waiting for the pain to subside. I had some (unpictured) kefir chia pudding that I coincidentally made last night. My mouth (and stomach) liked that one! I’ll make it again for y’all to see.

I went downstairs and ellipticalled for 60 min. while watching [Hey Y'all] Paula Deen add 2 sticks of butter and a cup of sugar to everything she made. I also watched Bring it On All or Nothing. Some things should just go un-blogged :)

I came home and made myself a salad but my teeth were still a bit raw from earlier. So I made a massive Green Monster instead. Virtually the same thing just in liquid form right?!?

IMG_7295.JPG

  • Frozen spinach
  • Frozen berries
  • Greens+ Superfood Mix
  • Kefir
  • Stevia

I also baked up the rest of the sweet potato fries with a light coating of EVOO and ate them with some organic ketchup I found in the fridge.

IMG_7300.JPG

Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm!! Nice and soft for my toothies!

I snacked on some papaya and honey dew while writing this up. My hunger is definitely catching up now that my gums aren’t screaming at me. I think I’m gonna go venture off to find some more grub!

Quirky Qs

1) Have you ever had a super-painful dental experience? What did you eat? I had head gear and braces back in the day so I had my fair share of soup and yogurt only WEEKS.

2) What’s your favorite pancake flavor/recipe? What are your favorite add-ins? The pancakes I made today were definitely high on my list!

~~~~~~~~~~
I’m off to go prepare my BSI post!!! Coco chose me to be the next host!! I’m super excited for this…stay tuned for the secret ingredient.
AWww, sorry to hear you were numb for most of the day, but at least you got to enjoy some incredible pancakes before the trauma.
Oh boy, do I have the most HORRIFYING dental experiene. My wisdom teeth surgey (that happened 4 months ago) was the worst experience of my life. I still can’t feel the right side of my tounge from the perm. nerve damange that was done. Ugh, such an awful experience that ruined my life! :(
And pumpkin is definitely my favorite add in to pancakes too!
honeybunch my dentist does not believe in novacaine. Talk about a painful filling. He always just says “oh its not hat deep, I can do it without it”. YEAH RIGHT.
Those pancakes look delicious. I’m gonna have to try that recipe.
My dad makes the BEST pannycakes so those are the yummiest flavor as far as I am concerned!
Glad your teethies are starting to feel better!
Those pancakes look delish! I loathe the dentist. Back in my braces days, I remember my dad making me mashed potatoes for dinner for days on end. Glad those years are over!
Holy yum @ those pancakes.
And I am terrified of the dentist. I haven’t been in forever, which is TERRIBLE, I know. But I hate going so much that I put if off until I can’t any more.
Hope you mouth feels better soon!
That is awful that you were in so much pain! Your pancakes look so good, I have all the ingredients, I might be making them soon! And all the bring it on movies suck me in no matter how bad they are!
Hope you feel better soon. You sound like you were in a lot of pain. T_T. When I am in pain I like to sleep. Then I will forget I am in pain.
So sorry to hear about your pain! Hope you feel all better soon! Those pancakes look amazing and I love that you travel with your magic bullet! I do love that thing as well! My fave pancake is pumpkin :) I haven’t had a bad dental experience-got my wisdom teeth out years ago but some were already out of the gum so there really wasn’t much pain. I do remember eating baked beans that night though! haha
You poor thing!!!
Once I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out – only on the fourth one, they found a smaller FIFTH wisdom tooth GROWING OUT of the fourth tooth. Seriously. I had a mutant tooth! Needless to say, I couldn’t eat solid food for a while. I remember sipping a lot of orange juice and cranberry juice, and then moving on to the applesauce and tomato soup…. and then finally on to soft bread and hummus and such. Ugh. Such a bad experience.
I hope your mouth is feeling better soon!!
PS. I, um, love the Bring It On series. Ahem. >.>
Sorry you had a painful experience.
I haven’t ever had a painful dental experience. I hate going to the dentist but haven’t ever ended up in pain!
Bananas and peanut butter are my favorite pancake toppings!
I was in all kinds of pain when I had my wisdom teeth removed. It was quite a few years ago, but I remember eating tons of ice cream and soup with bread dipped in it. Not exactly nutritious, but at least it didn’t hurt going down :)
Wowza those pancakes look beeeautiful and yummy! I love banana pancakes (like the song haha). Most painful dentist experience was when i had my wisdom teeth popped out. I’m pretty sure i looked like the watermelon head on the Starburst commercials. Have a great week girly!!
Wow, that sounds like a bad dentist!!!
I’ve had 4 wisdom teeth out at once and was eating that night with no painkillers! My new dentist poked a really sore spot last time I went that sent shivers up and down my spine! Ackk. Worst mouth experience is when I had braces and they would do those mouth molds – I hated holding my mouth open and having it feel like I couldn’t breath while it dried! I had to have braces twice, too!
I hope you feel better soon, though! That sounds horrible! :(
Can’t wait to see what you pick for BSI! I’ve never been to your blog before, it’s cute and I love your food!
Hey there!! Sorry to hear about your painful dental experience. :( I’m actually applying to dental schools so I can be a dentist! A gentle one that is. I’ve totally had terrible and painful experiences – specifically speaking, when my anesthesia wore off while the oral surgeon was extracting a wisdom tooth…she refused to give me more pain killers!!! ahhh
I really love your pancake recipe and am book marking is for future use! I have been searching for a great pumpkin pancake recipe, and I think this one will be perfect if I swap our the butternut squash mush for pumpkin! :) Thanks Allie!
P.s I’m having a ZenSoy pudding and soymilk giveaway! come on by if you’re interested! :)
I had the years of braces pain…something I’m glad I don’t have to go back to!
I was sooooo lucky when I had my wisdom teeth out…I didn’t even touch the Vicodin they sent me home with. I honestly had no pain! My mouth was a little bit sore when I went to work the next day (waitressing = lots of talking!), but no pain. My oral surgeon was amazing.
Oh my, pancakes are one of my favorite foods, but I don’t get to make them nearly as often as I’d like since they’re a tad time consuming. My faves include simple banana, orange-blueberry, and chocolate chip:)
I had a super awful experience when I got jaw surgery and wisdom teeth extraction during my senior year of high school…5 days before my birthday. No birthday cake for me! Good thing I like (OK, LOVE) smoothies!
Those pancakes look so good. When i had to my first few cavities filled (not until the age of 17 might I add ;) ) My crazy dentist decided to fill one of my cavities without any freezing!! Needless to say we changed dentist right after that episode. I love blueberry and chocolate chips pancakes or a good old crepe will float my boat. Thanks for the tips on the London market I will check that out when i hit up london in december =)
Ugh, I had braces for a year and a half. The first week I got them, I just wanted to rip my teeth of. I couldn’t eat anything. Even mushy foods like porridges hurt. it was awful :( at least now I have pretty teeth :D
I loathe the dentist. I got braces in 4th grade and didn’t get them off until 7th. I had my wisdom teeth pulled recently and that wasn’t fun either :(
At least you had a yummy breakfast before the dental work :)
I hope you’re feeling better soon!
Those pancakes look awesome! Gah, sucks about the dentist- I would want advance warning too. When I had my filling, I just had to wait until the anaesthetic wore off, but wisdom teeth- I loved off soup, mashed potato and yogurt (ie, no swallowing!)
I have a magic bullet myself, I never thought of grinding flour in it!
I’m sorry you had such a painful day :(
I hate hate hate the dentist. I had a really bad surgery back when I was 14 and I also had braces for six years, so I lived off of tomato soup and smoothies.
My favorite pancakes are what I call cannoli pancakes. Cannoli are my favorite dessert, so naturally I wanted it in breakfast form. I just make chocolate chip pancakes, fill them with a little bit of sweetened ricotta and sprinkle a tiny tiny bit of powdered sugar on the top. Roll it up for the full effect, of course. : )
I HATE the dentist. I would seriously rather give birth again than go there. Last time I had a cavity filled, my tongue and eye lid went numb for 6 hours! UGH!! I could barely suck through a straw that time.
I love your pancakes & swt pot fries!.
I’m so sorry you had dental work and couldn’t thoroughly enjoy your food. But those ‘paincakes’ you had before the procedure looked so good and purty. I cracked up when I read you brought your Magic Bullet home. It sounds like something I would have done.
I’m actually a weirdo – I don’t mind the dentist. I actually prefer a tough scraping when I get my teeth cleaned versus the hygienist going really gentle on me. Weird huh? I had my wisdom teeth (bottom ones, soft tissue impaction) removed a couple of years ago and it wasn’t so bad. I guess it’s because I was asleep for it. However, I felt like I had been shot when I woke up. Plus, I got a blood clot in my arm as a result of the IV. Fun.
