Kefir Yogurt Fondue

Last night, I didn’t have dinner.

Instead I had a lot of snax…by accident. I had some samples while grocery shopping so I wasn’t famished. However, upon entering my apartment, I ripped open my new snax and went to town. I had no interest in real food and I just wanted to try out my new snax. Naturally, I felt like a big wad of guilt afterwards. I wanted to go back in time, make a real dinner and then munch on my snax as a treat rather than a meal.

Well, I didn’t have access to a time machine so I had to move forward and get over it. I was still alive and my body was just as strong and healthy as a few hours before. There was no sense in beating myself up over it. I think the most important thing was that I sat down and thought through how I was feeling and how I could prevent that from happening in the future. [Read: Eat a real dinner before breaking into snax!!!]

Later I called my mom to chat while walking around the block. I walked for about 30 min. which helped me clear my mind and get the juices flowing.

***

Back track a couple hours:

I hit up Costco, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods and this is what I came back with. You’ll see close ups of all of them in the coming days.

Costco loot. Yes, I take my vitamins in candy form :) Not only is it more motivating (I never forget to take ‘em!!), they don’t make my tummy hurt. I tried taking One a Day’s and they made me feel like I had eaten 50 kabocha squashes WITH the skin….if you know what I mean.

I also got the massive $5.75 jar of almond butter and a tub of Greek yogurt. Life is good.

IMG_1690.JPG

So last night’s snax consisted of….

Pineapple Chips!! My absolute favorite dried fruit is pineapple and boy was I excited to see pineapple chips on the shelves. These are made with pineapples and palm oil and nothing else. TJ’s has carried vacuum fried banana chips for quite some time but these were definitely new.

IMG_1703.JPG

Sesame Honey Almonds. These are a new (to me) snack and they were delicious. I love sweet nuts.

IMG_1705.JPG

I had this and much more.

IMG_1699.JPG

Then I broke into a Luna Protein Bar. This time it was the Chocolate Cherry Almond Flavor. It tasted similar to the cookie dough flavor and the texture was the same. I liked cookie dough more but that’s just my preference. Also, I made a correction to my previous post: these have 12g of protein, not 8g. Sorry, Luna for the mistake.

IMG_1698.JPG

I also had chocolate and crackers. A balanced meal all around with not a veggie in sight!

***

This morning I woke up and went for a run in the gorgeous spring-like weather. 60 and sunny. Too perfect. I was pretty sluggish despite my carbo loading last night. I ran 2 1/2 miles and walked ~3/4 mi. I came back for some yoga but I was too hungry to continue after 10 minutes.

Or I was dreaming of this lovely combo:

IMG_1708.JPG

I made Kefir+Greek Yogurt FONDUE!!!!!

IMG_1715.JPG

In the center I mixed 3/4 cup of Greek yogurt and 3/4 cup of kefir.

Dippers included 1/2 banana, 1/2 pear….

Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel English Muffin

IMG_1719.JPG

and juicy strawberries.

IMG_1718.JPG

Here’s a peek at what went down.

IMG_1728.JPG

I’m off to class now but I’ve got a yummy dinner planned. A REAL dinner. Classic childhood lesson learned: Don’t spoil your appetite with snax.

I have the hardest time ever not “sampling” everything I just bought after a big grocery trip- I’m too excited to try all my new delicious looking foods!

I know exactly what you mean. The other day I was coming home from the gym and I thought pshh I’m not hungry I don’t need a snack before dinner. Wrong. I snicked snacked all through making dinner, which probably came out to more than if I had just had a simple bar or something, and I didn’t feel like I satisfactorily snacked due to all the random noshing. I’ll always try and have a bite of something now post exercise pre dinner! Love your fondue idea I definitely see myself employing a similar technique soon!

Ohh good idea, I should try the candy vitamins! I agree – the One a Day women’s didn’t agree w/ me. My mom took the bottle home w/ her Xmas so they didn’t go to waste.

I’ve never had dried pineapple – I’ll have to try it. My current fav is dried mango!

I love your attitude about moving forward! You’re absolutely right that your body was no less healthy than it was beforehand, and by thinking through your feelings and not dwelling on the guilt for too long, you’re definitely helping to prevent it in the future! Very inspirational :)

Meh. Sometimes you need a day of snacks. I wouldn’t worry about it. Your healthy fondue is certainly very nutritious!

I’ve been eating a lot of snacks lately too. There’s no sense in beating yourself up over it- just start a new day :)
I thought I was the only one who got stomach issues after eating Kabocha with the skin! I think I’ve learned my lesson…peel the squash

Good for you moving on and clearing your head. It can be so hard for me sometimes to realize that one meal or day is JUST one meal or day. And in the scheme of things it is insignificant!

Love your fondue chica!

Before we got out Costco membership, they sold Maranatha almond butter, but once we got the membership, they stopped carrying it! Lame! Now they have some weird almond butter that has egg whites in it. Why?! Good to hear you bounced back right away-definitely nothing to worry about! Love the fondue idea :)

I LOVE that big ole tub of yog from costco! and they have maranatha?!?! amazing! i need to go back!

i have to say that sometimes snacking is WAY better than 1 big meal…its so many delicious appetizers! I love the fondue plate…is kefir bitter like greek yog? I bet they are so good mixed together but I have never tried kefir! (i know you are the kefir queen so i am so ashamed telling you this!!)

Don’t feel too bad about not eating a “real” dinner. Sometimes snacking can be fun…but I know it can get out of hand, too. :/

I have had that carrot cake bar before! It’s alright, a weird texture. But, I am sure that’s because it is gluten-free. I love your fondue idea! I am going to be making coconut kefir and cashew yogurt. Maybe I will use your idea. ;)

Girl I LOVE your fondue plate. Fancy-pants!

And it’s funny, but I had the luna chocolate cherry almond bar today too! Wasn’t a fan; I liked the cookie dough better too.

And long walks and phone calls to mom make everything better : )

good job putting everything in perspective — i’ve had that ‘oops wish i could ERASE that’ feeling before (related to food, or other things!) and it’s hard. but you were awesome about moving on!

I love/hate when that happens. I love it because i got to have a lot of yummy snacks. But i hate it because I miss having a balanced meal. And it doesn’t feel right to trade snacks for a real dinnah.
