Before And After

Whew! Today was quite the snowy adventure. While I got to experience a massive snow storm at home during winter break, it was exciting to get snow at SCHOOL in North Carolina!  It doesn’t snow here often so I got a little camera crazy….

Are you ready? Let’s go!

Before: Last night it snowed and snowed and snowed….

IMG_2236.JPG

After: Today it continued to snow and snow and snow….

IMG_2251.JPG

Before: The day before it was 61 degrees and sunny. Remember when I sat outside in a t-shirt to study??

IMG_2176.JPG

After: NOT today…

IMG_2239.JPG

Before breakfast, I did a Dave Farmar yoga podcast for ~30 min. in my room and some ab work.

I think I tried every possible way to find out if the gym was open or not. I was starting to get cranky when I realized my planned workout was not gonna happen. At home, I wouldn’t have cared one bit. I mean, come ON, there’s SNOW!!!

Not at school though. At school, I get irked and frazzled when my plans get jumbled up. Why? .

Gosh I wish I could answer that. I guess I just need some sort of ‘control’ in a place where I feel so vulnerable? I’m trying REALLY hard to be okay with the world the way it turns but it’s hard!

(That’s the psychology major in me analyzing MYSELF)

IMG_2243.JPG

Yoga hurt because my muscles were tiiiiiiiiight. I also did tricep pushups yesterday so chatarungas were paaaaainful.

***

There are a lot of things that simply cannot be explained. Such as…

-Why it snows after a 60 degree day.

-Why I found the AC turned on and set at 50 degrees this morning (!!!).

-Why the gym was closed after a snow storm.

…Okay maybe not that last one :) .

Another thing? How I could possibly CRAVE a Kefir Green TEA Monster this morning…!?!?!??!?!?!?!

After:

IMG_2244.JPG

Well, it was a strong craving, so I went with it.

  • 1/4 cup kefir
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 cup frozen spinach
  • Instant Green Tea powder
  • h20

IMG_2246.JPG

And some homemade chocolate covered pretzels!

IMG_2249.JPG

Some little birdy came to visit!

IMG_2252.JPG

Before going on a SNOWY adventure…
.

Half-caf coffee (this is my roommmate’s new mug….sadly, not mine!). It’s so pretty and matches my SCARF.

IMG_2258.JPG

1/2 Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel English Muffin w/ Almond Butter and an Apple with Almond Butter

IMG_2254.JPG

Got me warmed up before heading out the door.

IMG_2253.JPG

5 layers up top: tank top, long sleeve t-shirt, sweatshirt, puffy vest, wind breaker

1 layer down low: FROZE MY BOOTY OFFFFF!!

Rain boots. Scarf. Hat. Gloves.

IMG_2280.JPG

Blogger gloves…

IMG_2286.JPG

To take photos :)

IMG_2285.JPG

I love the layer of micro fleece inside!

IMG_2288.JPG

And then I ventured off on a 25 min. walk through the snow to watch the Duke Basketball game on campus.

IMG_2293.JPG

See the beautiful chapel?

IMG_2295.JPG

The chapel up-close and personal. Hands down my favorite building at Duke.

IMG_2305.JPG

I mean…Hogwarts.

IMG_2312.JPG IMG_2300.JPG

Did I tell you? Duke is a school for witchcraft and wizardry :) .

IMG_2314.JPG

Resemblance…??

Picture 1.png

That’s me in my cloak!

IMG_2313.JPG

I finally found my roommates in time to watch us LOSE (in front of Prezzie Obama too! BAH!)

IMG_2309.JPG

I had a decaf coffee and an ORANGE to keep warm.

IMG_2310.JPG

Our hike back was craaaaaazy and a workout in itself!

First my roomie and I went sledding on trash bags and a random piece of cardboard….

IMG_2320.JPG IMG_2323.JPG

Then we went into the wishing well to ice skate. SO SLIPPERY. Almost broke this little guy’s arm off…

IMG_2327.JPG

This was all in the Duke Gardens. Breathtaking no matter what the weather is like.

IMG_2329.JPG

Remember how beautiful the Gardens looked in August?

IMG_2330.JPG

After:

IMG_2335.JPG

A much-needed and much-craved salad w/ tofu ‘n’ veggies. Topped with TJ’s Gyoza dippin’ sauce

IMG_2332.JPG

And a brie + avocado panini!

IMG_2334.JPG

Not sure what I’ll be munching on tonight. If it’s anything like last night, it’ll be gobs of chocolate+cereal+walnuts :) .

***

What a day!! I ended up having quite an ACTIVE DAY. More importantly, I had a lot of fun. I could let go for a little bit and just be my adventurous self again….and It felt great!

Before: Cranky and anxious

After: Happy (and cold)

I have a tendency to remember to layer up top, but not on the bottom. Is that a girl thing perhaps? Gotta be able to fit into the cute jeans!! ;-)

Aw! I stumbled on your blog from the Shu Box and it’s so fun to see Duke/Durham all snowy! I finished grad school at Duke in 08 and I’m pretty sure we never got snow while I was there…so, I’m a little jealous!

The pics look so pretty! My FB has exploded w/ NC friends and family posting snowy pics! :)

I have mittens like that from Delia’s! I got them 4 years ago and I LOVE them, they’re so convenient. I get compliments on them all the time. They’re so handy to just whip your fingers out and grab your keys, open a doorknob, sign something, snap pics, or use your phone. Although I’m jealous b/c mine don’t have microfleece!

Hope you didn’t beat yoruself up too badly over the workout mishap. Flexibility is hard to learn and get accustomed to, I feel your pain.

Hope you have a super saturday night :)

What a FUN day after all! You probably burned just as many calories as you would have at the gym. You’re adorable all bundled up in your layers.

I loveeeeeeed all these pictures that are so familiar :)

I totally understand the working out thing… it happens to me more at home, for some reason. At school, I’m fine about working out/missing workouts, but i’m more anal about eating. It’s one of the reasons I really want to graduate and get out of here.

Your campus is so gorgeous! I’m glad you enjoyed your day in the snow :) I don’t have any tickets for the olympics… yet. I’m working on a pair of a sweden & germany hockey game and possibly a speed skating one as well plus there are tons of free concerts going on to!

I LOVED all of your pictures and stumbling across your blog! I do (in a weird way!) miss the east coast snow where I am from. I’d rather have snow than rain now that I live in Northern Cal. P.S. your roommates mug is adorable!

Sounds like quite a nice little day! We didn’t even have snow in NY…weird. My school looks a wee bit like Hogwarts too. It’s fun, isn’t it? I also get totally frazzled when my school plans don’t work out. I don’t know why at all!

Your mittens are gorgeous!

Haha! This is hilarious, Allie! It’s look like you had a lot of fun today. :) It is sooo cold, so it’s making me feel irritable, too. Tomorrow I am DEFINITELY getting a workout in (hmm, oxymoron?) and I am going to get some homework complete and recipes made! Let’s hope I keep my promise… ;)

Ah looks like you had a well fun day! Snow always looks so pretty (when it’s not at my house – when it’s at home, I get annoyed cos I can’t ride or run :/), especially at Hogwarts!!
I’m exactly the same with plans going wrong – at uni I feel more insecure, so if things don’t turn out right or how I expect, I’m more inclined to panic or worry or get angry/upset. I need to work on it as well\! Any tips!? My mum always says BREATHE!! :P

Duke is so gorgeous! I guess I’m lucky that snow doesn’t close much up here…we’re too used to it! I have to say, reading all the Southerners’ blogs and realizing how excited they are about the snow makes me feel like I never realize how beautiful it is when it snows!

I can relate so much to your feelings of rigidity when it comes to your schedule while at school. Even just being home on Thursday night for me, I felt so much more flexible than I have for an entire week at school. So crazy. I just feel so “out of control” at school, but I do feel like it’s something that I will get more used to and handle better with time.

Really glad you were able to let go and have some fun with this crazy Southern weather! :)

So first of all, I know you have to comment on the snow, but all those pictures are making me SO jealous! The one weekend I spend in NYC we get snow in NC!!! I can’t wait to see it tonight :)

Secondly, if there’s one thing I learned in NYC it’s that I need gloves like those for using my iPhone. WHERE DID YOU FIND THEM???
