Light Years and Dots

Alrighty. So I found the most obscure way to post on here, no thanks to Mr. Ecto (my blogging software program). As a result, this post has taken light years to publish….and is filled with random dots (don’t ask).

This morning Yesterday morning, I got to chat with the owner of Sugarland, the bakery at which I am shadowing for my food writing class project/paper. It was interesting to hear how she got started in the food industry, as she graduated from a 4-year college with a theatre degree. Of course I asked her all about her path to opening her own bakery!

Afterwards, I got to observe in the kitchen again and the head cake decorator demonstrated the cake decorating process for me. I helped make a $2000+ 5-layer wedding cake–the carrot cake layer!

I peeled and shredded 65 oz. of carrots. Easily the highlight of my day. You think I’m kidding….

They sent me off with a Banana Nutella Cupcake! Banana cake with Nutella filling, topped with their Buttercream Icing and chocolate chips. Yep, it’s as good as it sounds!

Let’s back track to breakfast:

Straw-nanna Greek Yogurt + 2% Cottage Cheese. Yogurt and cottage cheese is one of my favorite combos. Toss in some fruit and it’s an instant parfait.

After my visit to Sugarland, I stopped by the juice bar at Whole Foods.

I got a Cucumber + Chard + Kale juice. I normally get Spinach as the third veggie but I decided to kick it up a notch with KALE.

It gave me quite an energy boost that fueled my workout. I always forget how great the day after a rest day is until the day after. I did 60 min. on the elliptical and then got the urge to RUN. I ran 2 miles and did some ab work. I swear I had everlasting energy!

I got the artichoke hearts from Trader Joe’s. I love artichoke hearts but have never gotten them from the store. I usually only eat them in restaurants. This was so easy–I just popped off the top and they were ready to go.

Did you know 1 serving of artichoke hearts has 3g of protein!?

I made a quick tzatziki dip with Greek yogurt, a spoonful of cottage cheese, diced cucumbers and dill.

For dessert I had some strawberries and pineapple:

I also polished off the Banana Nutella Cupcake I got as well as random nibbles while wrestling with Ecto–plantain chips, chocolate chips, pumpkin ice cream and dried pineapple.

Figure skating made my frustrating night a little better :) . Have a great weekend everyone! I’m gonna go figure out how to fix Ecto and hopefully be able to fill you in on the demo we had in my culinary cultures class!

I don’t see any dots!

Sugarland sounds like an awesome place! But with a name like that, it’s not hard to believe. Carrot cake wedding cake and a nutella cupcake? I want some!

We have the same mixer at my donut job! And I have to hoist it up onto my shoulder to pour the batter into the donut hopper!

I’m normally not a big cake person, but that cupcake looks incredible!!! It sounds like so much fun and such a great experience to be in that bakery! Your Greek-inspired dish looks yummy too. I’ve grown up eating stuffed artichokes that my Italian grandparents make-soooo goood. Hope you have a great weekend and that this Ecto junk gets solved soon!

I need to get the tool that is used to fill cupcakes…it’s something I haven’t tried yet and really want to! $2,000 wedding cake?? I guess that’s what we can focus on for our bakery!! Haha just kidding. You can peel all the carrots you want. :)

Please let me know any of the insider tips you get…add it to our document!

That cupcake looks AMAZING.

I recently started using Google Reader, and the dots make it a LOT worse on that… there’s a paragraph + picture, then a bunch of random dots then another picture etc etc…

I’m glad I came back to the original site to read this post, though. You’re inspiring me day by day! XD
