Crazy Cakes

Yesterday I woke up early (for a Saturday morning) to go shadow at Sugarland Bakery. Twice in one week–what a treat! No pun intended :) .

In case you missed my other adventures at the bakery:

My 1st day @ Sugarland

My 2nd day @ Sugarland

I gobbled down breakfast as I got ready for a sweet day. The sun is shining so brightly in this photo. I’m not used to this because I’m usually not awake until the sun is high in the sky!!

Dairy is a wonderful thing:

  • Kefir
  • 2% Cottage Cheese
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Pineapples

IMG_3606.JPG

1/2 Ezekiel w/ almond butter and 1/2 Carrot Ginger Muffin

IMG_3608.JPG

French press coffee to get me jazzed up, not that I needed it–I was plenty excited already!

It was quite a busy day in the bakery mostly due to the $2000 wedding cake being built!!

First the cake decorator rolled out fondant to cover each of the five 5″ tall layers and made sure there were no air bubbles. Then she ‘drew’ a diamond pattern along the sides.

IMG_3617.JPG

Next they airbrushed the cake with vodka + [edible] shimmery stuff to make it **platinum**. Airbrushing isn’t only for magazine photos!

They use vodka instead of water because it evaporates so the cake does not get damp. Smart, huh?

See the sparkles?

Then they stuck on Swarovski crystals. Yep, you read that right.

4 of the 5 layers. The layers were 18″, 15″, 12″, 9″, and 6″ in diameter.  The foam boards on the left went in between each layer to they could stick fresh flowers.

They emailed me a photo of the finished product at the wedding:

Wow. I’m speechless!!!!

I also helped the baker make some chocolate mousse cakes. I got to stir this wonderful bowl of butter and chocolate while it melted.

Whipping the mousse:

Chocolate cake with a layer of chocolate ganache waiting to be topped with chocolate mousse.

Done!

I got to try a red velvet cupcake that was an extra. This flavor is a best seller. Well, let’s be honest, they’re all best sellers!!

I <3 red velvet!!! Perhaps it’s because red is my favorite color?

IMG_3616.JPG

I hit up the gym for 60 min. on the elliptical. I ran and lifted the day before so my options were limited.

Before heading to a group meeting at the library, I guzzled a protein spinach smoothie:

  • 1 cup frozen spinach
  • 1/2 packet vanilla protein powder
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 cup almond milk

IMG_3638.JPG

I snacked on some plantain chips and Carrot Ginger Muffin w/ almond butter.

Then I was off to a blogger meet up for dinner. I’ll be back with a recap. This post was crazy enough with all those crazy cakes!

What an amazing experience! That cake is absolutely gorgeous, it’s awesome you got in on the action! I’m always amazed at the prices of wedding cakes, but if it tastes as good as it looks, that cake was probably worth every penny. Enjoy your Sunday!

I’m incredibly jealous of where you are getting to shadow at! That wedding cake is absolutely amazing! I can’t even imagine spending half that amount on a wedding cake. I haven’t been a big fan of red velvet yet, but all it takes is that one exceptional bite!

Ummm that mousse and ganache filling(!) Did you just want to take a giant spoon to those?! That wedding cake is gorgeous! One of my bridesmaids made our wedding cake! :) We had a big ice cream bar because I’m an i.c. girl and a smaller cake for the tradition of it. Anyways, she just stared playing around in her kitchen. You could totally get in on that! Then advertise to recent college grads getting married who want to save a little money but still want a beautiful and tasty cake! Haha listen to us with the job ideas for each other! Love it. :)
