Who’s Reading My Blog?

in Books, Breakfast, Classes, Dessert, Fitness, Lunch, Snacks

Last week when I sat down with the bakery owner to chat, she and the manager mentioned that they ‘loved my blog.’ Ummm…oh really? To be quite honest, I felt a little embarrassed, excited, delighted, and flattered, all at the same time. It caught me completely off guard (they found it because I linked back to their website). Now, I’m okay with just about anyone reading my blog, after all it is available for the world to see. However, often times when I am writing, I don’t think about who really is on the other side of the screen.

When I first started reading blogs over 2 years ago (whew! that’s a long time), I never commented on them even though I read them faithfully. I’m not sure why. I suppose I thought that because I didn’t have a blog of my own it would be somewhat awkward. After all, they wouldn’t know anything about me.

Of course, when people comment on my blog now, I know they’re reading but who else is there? I know my best friend’s mom, some of my Culinary Cultures classmates, my family, and even my dietician are reading! My dietician asked for the link and I sent it to her. That wasn’t a big deal since I tell her everything anyways. Even so, sometimes I forget that even they are reading my blog.

I wouldn’t write a public blog if I didn’t want people (even people I’m unaware of) reading it. It does make me blush a little when I find out they are reading since I am so open about my life and let’s be honest, taking photos of food and gushing over kefir isn’t exactly normal.

Then again, I’ve never been normal and that’s what makes me special!!

So I’ve got some questions for you now….

Bloggers: Who is your audience? Who are you writing to when you blog?

Readers: Do you feel weird commenting as just a reader? Introduce yourself (if you want)!

***

Let’s get back to normalcy:

As part of my pre-spring break fridge cleaning mission for this week, I made a Leek, Artichoke & Almond Cheese Frittata.

IMG_3750.JPG

First, I sauteed the leeks and artichokes.

IMG_3736.JPG

Added in 4 egg whites and almond cheese. Then I covered the pan so the egg whites would cook!

IMG_3739.JPG IMG_3740.JPG

TA DA!! I originally wanted to make an omelet but I knew with all the goodies I had, I would’ve never fit it all inside without a messy outcome.

IMG_3754.JPG

IMG_3746.JPG

Served with 2 slices of toast.

IMG_3760.JPG

It was another gorgeous day so I walked ~2 mi. while reading A Whole New Mind for class.

IMG_3690.JPG

Afternoon snack:

Kefir + Greek yogurt w/ strawberries and Kashi Puffs Cereal

IMG_3768.JPG

Ready to eat!

IMG_3769.JPG

I had a long afternoon/night of classes so I packed some orangey snax:

Carrots and Kumquats

IMG_3776.JPG

I actually ate them with a packet of Barney Butter.

IMG_3787.JPG

I picked up a couple Rosie’s Granola Bars….aka crack bars. I ate one as a pre-workout snack during my last class.

IMG_3788.JPG

At the gym, I ellipticalled for 60 min. and then did arm weights for 20 min.

For dinner, I prepped a salad with broccoli slaw, ~1/3 of the frittata I made (I didn’t finish it earlier) and cottage cheese.

IMG_3780.JPG

I didn’t finish it because in all seriousness, I prefer to have sweet food for breakfast. Okay, I prefer to have sweet food at all times of the day but especially for breakfast.

IMG_3781.JPG

Cottage cheese = Salad dressing <– so good!

IMG_3782.JPG

For dessert I munched on these organic chocolate covered cacao nibs and expresso beans. I found them on campus and immediately picked them up (gotta use up the food points!). They are vegan too…I know I’ve got some vegan readers out there!

I’m surprised I could fall asleep with the caffeine that these contain.

IMG_3786.JPG

Have a great day whoever is reading!!! :)

I still don’t really think anyone reads my blog besides blogs I comment on, family, and friends. I guess I write to that audience. I doubt I would comment if I was another blogger, because I may feel weird – unless it was a very moving post.

Hey Allie! I’m one of those that reads and never really comments, but your post inspired me to say hi! I’m a senior in college too (in WA state). I’ve been reading blogs for about 2 years too, and stumbled upon yours a couple months ago. I guess I do feel slightly strange leaving a comment without a blog of my own…I’ve been thinking about starting one. What prompted you to make the jump from reader to blogger? It looks so fun, but time consuming!

Ooh, I didn’t know Barney Butter came in little packs like that!

I just started reading food blogs a few weeks ago, and I felt kind of creepy commenting without my own blog! So I tried to start one during snowmageddon, but don’t really have the time & motivation to keep it up. Anywho, I’m Shannon, from Northern VA. I’m 26, work in accounting, and just got married in August. I’m trying to lose these “last” 25 lbs, but get kind of crazy obsessive when counting calories. I love food blogs because I love seeing the healthy ideas and portions that all you ladies eat! I’m also training for my 2nd 1/2 marathon. Thanks for blogging Allie!

I think I’m still trying to define who I want to write too and who my audience is. I know what topics I want to write about, I just hope readers like them :)

I love reading blogs and hope readers enjoy mine :)

I did have a blog, and to be honest it made me feel too exposed and under pressure so I stopped. But your blog is still a bright spot in my day!! Thanks for writing and I will keep reading. :)

I don’t think I write “for” any particular person, I just try to be myself and hope that comes through a little!

HI!! Well you know I’m reading! Sometimes I think about the audience or who might be reading… like “hmmm what if my aunt read this?? What would she think??” It’s odd that thinking about strangers interested in the topic will read it often seems easier than writing thinking that my family/ friends are reading. Last night my roommate asked me if I am weirded out that strangers read my blog and that thought never really occurred to me, especially since I know that a lot of readers are other bloggers that I “know” from reading their blogs. Sorry about the long winded response, just something I’ve been thinking about lately as my family and friends are reading more!

What a beautiful fritatta!!
I don’t really know who I write to in all honesty! I just imagine people like me – young women who love food and exercise and healthy living :s I doubt many men or junk food addicts read my blog! I’d love to find out who does though :)

I’m the same with sweet foods for bfast! I looooove eggs but I always eat them for lunch or dinner because I’m never in the mood for anything non-oatmeal/yogurt/oatbreeezy in the manana!

I often wonder who the non-foodies are who read my blog. I guess if they’re reading, they probably are foodies–just blogless ones haha. I mostly write for the blogging community–and my grandma. She’s my #1 reader–so I always keep her in mind (and the TWSS action to a minimum haha)

My goal for my blog is to create a dialogue or a community with people who are on a similar journey to embrace a healthy lifestyle, one that incorporates body, mind, and spirit. I try to write about topics that would interest those people, even though at this point I’m sure many of my readers are just family and friends!

Hi Allie! I’ve been reading since around Sept/October! I’m almost halfway through my first year in graduate school (I’m getting a master’s in library + info science) and I love reading about all of your adventures :) I’m also dying to try Kefir! I tried the Trader Joe’s (I share a similar love of Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods) fro-yo and LOVED it!! I’ve been trying to find skim though…I’m guessing WF would have it? I’ll keep searching…and yes, I usually don’t comment because I don’t have a blog, so I feel it’d be weird? But is it more weird to read and not comment? I still haven’t decided…lol.

Hi Allie! I’m one of those people who has been reading your blog avidly for the last few months, but I dont think I’ve every actually commented! Probably because since I dont have a blog of my own (quite yet, at least), I dont quite feel like I am 100% a member of this “blogger” world. haha. But yes, I have been reading your blog for quite some time now, because I love it! Anyway, I’m Stephanie from Northern VA, although I just graduated from Virginia Tech (good job on the bball win a few weeks back, PS, although we gave you a run for your money!) and will actually be returning next fall to start grad school! Just a funny story to share before I go – before the VT-Duke bball game my boyfriend was saying that he didn’t know anyone who went to Duke who was nice (no offense, it was said in the spirit of bball rivalry), and I responded with “I know someone nice who goes to Duke! Well… “know” in the sense that we’ve never actually met before…or spoken…and she doesnt know I exist…but she’s nice!” Needless-to-say, I had to explain about your blog. :D Anyway, keep up the blogging, and I’ll try to comment more often now that we’re…kind of… introduced!

you know, im not really sure who I write for. Most time I only write to myself. Its just a journal for me and I never really consider who reads my blog. thats why it always sounds like verbal/mental throw-up on my blog. most times it only makes sense to me.

The frittata looks great but I’m with you on liking a sweet b-fast! I tend to like egg related meals at lunch.

I don’t normally think about who is reading my blog….probably because I don’t think I have very many readers! ;) A couple sets of parents on Noah’s hockey team found the blog through my email address and like you it was a mix of emotions!!

17 Jessica@Healthy Exposures March 2, 2010 at 2:36 pm

Whoa – didn’t know that just linking back to a site notifies them? Now I’m thinking who I’ve linked back to, haha.
Sometimes I wonder who’s out there, too! I know I’m still rather obscure and not “well-known”, but when I write I just write to whoever wants to listen! I know I’m gearing myself towards more of a health-foodie audience, but at the same time hope more people can relate to me even if they don’t share my views. I like to just get my thoughts out for myself, too.
I was the same way – I blog-read wayyy before I started blogging…and honestly, it never even occurred to me that i should or COULD comment without being a blogger myself.
Those Rosie’s bars look great! Seems like a local company the way they’re packaged (haven’t scoped out their site yet!) – but don’t you love/hate how local companies have the best foods?! Love because there’s a sense of pride – but hate because you don’t get to share how good they are with the rest of the foodie world!

I’m Andrea, I’m a blogless reader :) I usually don’t comment because I agree it might be weird since the bloggers don’t know me, but then again its a public blog so why not? I think your blog is great! I get so much inspiration and motivation from the blog world and I’m hoping to one day start my own. But for now, I’ll just keep reading everyone’s wonderful blogs :)

Hey! I’m another one of those reader-not-commenter types… I think not having a blog makes me think of myself as “not quite worthy” to comment, because what do I know? I’m not inventive enough to create my own exciting meals; I just steal the ideas of food bloggers! The food blogosophere is really helpful for someone like me: a second-year college student attempting veganism with a history of eating disorders. I think being anonymous also makes you more open with your life, including serious and more frivolous matters. Anyway… hope you enjoy this novel I’ve just written you, I’m late for Spanish!

Hey girl. So funny, I am the same way. Some of my friends say they read it all the time..and I have had family members tell me “so and so” that they know reads it and now is changing their eating habits, etc. It’s crazy! I have high school friends on facebook say they are blog stalking me, lol. It is weird and slightly embarrassing…but those “google analytic” numbers are coming from somewhere! Hi Allie-

I don’t comment on most blogs because I don’t think I have much insight or advice on most things. I read blogs to learn…I guess I should start commenting more. I know that’s how I know people are reading my blog.

I only thought my family were reading my blog, but I have gotten some recent comments that show me others are reading.

It does make you feel like your blog is serving a purpose!

My audience is my family and friends. I would love to get into the blogger world, but don’t have time to post every day. I also don’t have that much knowledge about food and healthy living so I don’t feel comfortable giving advice on my blog. Maybe if I learned more about it…

Enjoy your day!!

Okay. It’s time for me to come clean. I’m one of those anonymous readers who never comments, but I’ve been reading your blog religiously all semester long. What makes this especially creepy is that I go to Duke, as well (I’m a sophomore), so I’m constantly looking for you. Although I don’t know if I saw you if I’d be forward enough to go, “Hey! I love reading about what you eat everyday!”

I’m actually a Robertson on my semester switch, so I’m at UNC this semester without a meal plan (aka no need to use food points!!). Instead, I just have a big ol’ stipend from the program, so I’ve been living at the Trader Joe’s that you frequent on 15-501. I definitely got those honey sesame cashews you mentioned while I was there last time — bad move; they were gone in, like, five days.

There’s sooo much I could say about Duke and body image and food issues and the general social environment there. Basically, I feel you on a lot of things. Now that I’ve outed myself, maybe I’ll be more forward about commenting. Maybe we could even meet up sometime!

It’s frustrating because I would love to vent on it and talk about changing careers but I can’t because they found the link on facebook (which I obviously put on there myself…oops). I’ve been blogging since 2002! My first 5 years were mostly my day-to-day events, but also featured my worries, frustrations and many a rant! These years were as an anonymous blogger. 3 years ago I decided to go public and it took me awhile to figure out who I was writing for. It was mostly family and friends reading then and I found that I was writing thinking of them, more than what I wanted to say. I conquered that and now that I’ve entered the world of the food blog, I hope to get my readership up and not bore them with my life too much!

My name is Gabriela. I´m 15 years old now.
In the beggining, I just read blogs – I never commented!
But then, when I started doing it, I started to receive comments over my blog – which made me incredibly happy!
So, since then, I´ve been commenting as much as I can on blogs I love. Like yours!

Have a great week, Allie!

I feel like I’m writing to other bloggers mainly…but its always surprising to learn that friends & family read my blog! I honestly feel like I’m more open on my blog than I am in person…so sometimes I get a little embarrassed if I find out someone close to me has been reading! ha ha :)

Hi! I have been commenting for awhile now on here (and some other blogs) but you’re right, sometimes I do feel a bit weird commenting without having a blog myself. I don’t want people to think I am some weirdo!! Especially because of how excited I get over reading them! haha

Whenever I make a garden salad at home..I *always* put cottage cheese at the bottom…it’s sooo delicious and makes for a nice surprise at the bottom of my salad!

As a blogger I write for other people like me (my blog falls on the slightly less healthy side of healthy living :D ) and my family, who don’t live close by and read religiously!

I write to whomever, and I don’t really tell people about my blog, but I did tell the nutritionist I talked to today!

HAha, that is such an interesting question…who AM I writing to? I think I have a few hundred readers, but not all comment…and their faces are all blank! I suppose I write mostly to myself, and I write the way I would speak to a friend…because this is quite an embracing community, and I truly feel myself here.

I feel like I write pretty much to family and friends, and just a few fellow bloggers. It always makes me happy through when someone tells me they love reading it, especially when it’s random friends that I had no idea read it! :)

Hiya!

I haven’t commented before but I’ve been reading for a few months now and love your blog! I have a blog too and mainly write as though I’m writing to myself, really!!! I know a few people in person who read it and some others who have gotten to my blog via me leaving a comment on their blog … Most of the time I don’t comment on people’s blogs because sometimes there are so many comments that I feel like my comment will just get lost in the sea of comments, you know?

The weirdest thing for me was probably having my sister tell me that she reads my blog … and on the blog I go a lot into my binge eating and stuff, so it was a bit confronting to realise that she’d been reading the blog all along. It’s amazing how people can find you on the internet!

Anyway, keep up the awesome work on the blog!!

Hi Allie,

Your blog is one of MANY food blogs I read (actually, yours is one of the awesome few I actually READ every day — I’ll admit, there are a few I just find myself skimming for pictures!). I NEVER comment because I don’t have a food blog (I actually have another blog, but I don’t update regularly, so I’m not even linking to it in this comment). Anyway, I really enjoy your blog and decided to stop lurking today because you asked us to. :) I’ve got to tell you, I tried kefir after you and one of my spinning instructors recommended it, and I’m hooked! I eat it for breakfast with cereal every single day now! My favorites ate TJ’s strawberry and Lifeway Raspberry. Mmmm…! Ummm, also, you posted a few days ago about a DC area get-together. I’m in the DC-MD area and would love to get together. I’ve been toying with the idea of emailing you, but I haven’t yet because, again, since I don’t have a food blog, I didn’t know if that would be awkward…? Anyway, it feels nice to have de-lurked! I’ll be around and thanks for publishing a blog that’s so fun to read each day!!

Well, I already introduced myself a while ago :) anyway, I’ve been reading blogs since last summer and have been thinking of starting my own, but somehow I feel I need to dip my toes in to the blogger world by commenting my favourite blogs first.. and maybe one day I have the courage to start my own! I had a blog few years back, but it was for family and friends while I was abroad in Germany and I’m thinking of starting a blog which is about food. After all, food is what makes me tick ;) even my bf said this morning that “do you ever think about anything else than food?” :D well.. sometimes… :D

Anyway, I truly enjoy your blog and read it everyday!

Snowy greetings from Finland,

Anne

You know I’m reading. I don’t hide : )

As a blogger, I am curious about this too. My ratio of hits to comments is so little… I wonder who all knows about every bit about my life, too. Posting through FaceBk has brought some surprising readers.

Hi there Allie! I’m a college student, (also a senior!! and nottt ready to leave yet) just like you and I found your blog through another blog, I started reading and absolutely love all your recipes and I can really relate to your hectic schedule…so your advice and my mutual love/obsession for kefir has kept me reading! I was considering starting my own blog a while back but, not really confident in who would be interested in reading about all the oatmeal I eat. But, you are great inspiration and I really love the blog so thank you for always posting stuff all of us readers can look forward to!

I’m not really sure who my audience is…I don’t think i have a very big one yet. A good friend of mine, and a couple other bloggers that I’ve commented to, but other than that I have no idea.

When I write, I write for me right now. I haven’t really considered who is reading. But, actually, I have, because I’ve choose not to write a few things because I’m not sure who is reading.

Allie, do you use lotus root? Someone told me you did. I bought some on the weekend because I saw some recipes in a magazine, but I can’t find the magazine. What I bought is already cut up, and in a vaccum sealed bag. do you have any thoughts or ideas?
Love your blog girl.

heyy allie,
i’ve gotta confess…i’ve been reading your blog for a few months now. it’s really inspirational to see another college student working hard to eat well, and also great that you incorporate chinese ingredients in a some how healthy manner (admirable!) now i also wish there was a trader joes somewhere near heree
keep the good eats coming!

Hey Allie-pants. I still check in every week or so to catch up on your eating habits… and life events. The blog looks better than ever and seems like this semester is going great or at least better than previous ones. Hope things are going well and I miss you!!! Take it easy and goodluck with the rest of college slash job searching. I’m still struggling with the latter.. the real world definitely is a lot different than college. In some ways its better but mostly not.

Hi Allie! My name is Jen and I have been “lurking”/reading your blog for a few months now. I don’t have a blog, but have a passion for fitness and healthy eating after having lost almost 70 pounds this year. Love to see your eats everyday! I tried kefir because of you and I love it! I also made your carrot cake bars which my family and I loved! Thanks for all of the food inspiration!

I’m reading :)
I run two blogs — kelly b well (linked) and kelly cooks (http://kellycooks.wordpress.com)
I don’t know that I sought out an audience for either. I really just enjoy writing.
My cooking blog serves as a recipe book of sorts, and my health and fitness blog serves as a record of eats, exercise, how i felt, etc.

Hi Allie!
I love reading your blog! I graduated from UNC a little over a year ago so I know the area and I think it’s fun to read about your life at Duke. I’m like you used to be in that I read lots of food blogs but rarely comment because I dont have my own. I want to start one just so I can be a part of the little community, haha. Have a great night!

Hi! First, I just want to say that I LOVE your blog! I found it about a month or so when I first “discovered” food blogs—which I now spend WAY too much time reading each day! :) Your blog is one of my favorites. I’m a graduate student who loves exercise (I ran Cross-Country and Track at Drake University, and just completed my first marathon) and eating healthfully, but, like many others, I didn’t think I had the time to do it all the time! You have given me so many wonderful ideas for eating with a busy schedule (or to try to eat in those crazy 3-hour long classes!). Thanks so much for giving so many great ideas!

Well I recently bookmarked your page – I saw your link from another food blog and all the gorgeous foodies of yours have made me come back for more! I have been a silent reader …. Leaving a comment now so that you know that I am reading =)

I’ll answer the blogger question! But first, since I am a reader too, HI again! My audience is to anyone who wants to read and feels that I am writing in a way that they enjoy and is aimed at them. Since I live on the opposite coast of my family and friends, I, initially, started to write so that they could see what I am up to and for it to be a way of communication!! I’ve found though that when I show passion for what I am writing about, my personality shines through a post, so although the TOPIC may interest them, it is as if they are coming to know a blogger as another human being, as a friend :)

Hello! I just found your blog via a comment on another blog. I always feel a little weird commenting on blogs, as I don’t write one myself. . .I think I would like to eventually! I am also a college student and I find your blog inspiring because eating well in college can be a challenge.
