Mission Accomplished

I made it home safe ‘n’ sound! No traffic, no nuthin’, I was smooth sailin’!

Here’s what went down yesterday–the last day of my fridge cleaning mission. I successfully finished off every last bite of perishable food. I was extremely proud of myself–arguably too proud :) .

Here’s the list of food I still had to finish:

  • Fruit: strawberries, 1/2 banana, kumquats, 1/2 apple
  • 2 eggs
  • ~1 cup almond milk
  • leftover salad
  • 5 carrot stix

Ready or not, here I come!

Breakfast:

I decided to use my last 2 eggs to make french toast!

Whole wheat bread soakin’ in a bath of egg whites, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and almond milk:

Topped with strawberries, bananas, ground flax seeds and pecans:

And a glaze of kefir + Greek yogurt:

For my Culinary Cultures class, we headed to the North Carolina Public Radio station in downtown Durham because our class had a 20 min. segment on “The State of Things,” which runs every weekday at 12 PM.

IMG_3986.JPG

My professor and 3 of my classmates spoke LIVE on the show. The rest of us sat in the control room and got to see the behind the scenes action. T’was pretty cool!

You can listen to the segment, Hometown Appetites, here if you want (I just found it Google searching).

The American Tobacco Warehouse District in Downturn Durham has undergone major renovations. This used to be a warehouse! Now it is a modern, sleek business building.

Run, Allie, Run!

After class, I decided it would be 100% necessary to take advantage of the beautiful weather. This weekend is going to be gorgeous in Durham (except I’m home)! Can you believe it’s going to be 66 degrees on my birthday down there?

IMG_3990.JPG

I always have a hard time dealing with my keys when I run. I get nervous when I tie them on my shoe because I always think they’re gonna fly off!

I came up with this brilliant idea at the very last second to loop de loop my hair tie and wear it as a bracelet!

IMG_3989.JPG

Ready to go with my shin sleeves, iPod, and Garmy .

IMG_3993.JPG

The workout rocked my SOX:

  • 4 mile run (to and around the WaDuke trail)
  • 15 min. leg weights at the gym
  • 10 min. elliptical to cool down

My Garmin died mid way through the run. It made for a relaxing run though. I didn’t feel pressure to increase my pace and I could just run to enjoy the trail and the sunshine. I felt like a million bux!

I had to take care of some business after I showered so my post-workout meal was delayed!! My blood sugar went tumbling down and as a result, I scarfed down dinner in seconds.

I hate the that shaky, low blood sugar feeling!

IMG_3997.JPG

Leftover salad with apples, carrots, eggplant, and pecans. I topped it with TJ’s Gyoza Dipping Sauce.

IMG_4007.JPG

I also had a leftover 1/2 slice of French toast from breakfast.

IMG_4008.JPG

And I finished off the kefir and Greek yogurt!! Just in the nick o’ time. My bowl included strawberries, banana slices, and a homemade granola that my friend Amanda made me–thanks, Amanda!! Tell your Momma her recipe is delicious!

I accidentally dropped this guy on his head!!

IMG_4009.JPG

IMG_3996.JPG

I snacked on the rest of the granola bag while packing because even after all that food, I was still a little shaky.

IMG_4004.JPG

After 2 hours of packing (whew!) I hit the road. I packed the kumquats and strawberries to snack on while driving.

As well as an Chocolate Heart Thrive and 1/2 a Rosie’s Granola Bar.

Nothing left in the fridge! Success. Fridge Cleaning Mission Accomplished!

I just found your blog and think it’s great! And I especially love the “key ring” idea. I always get nervous tying mine in my shoelaces too. But now I have a wrist sleeve (wrist wallet) and it works perfectly. Mine is actually cute. It’s reversible. One side is black and the other side is pink paisley. I can fit my ID, chapstick and key in there with plenty of room to spare! You might want to check it out!

Can’t wait to keep reading!

Good job getting creative with ways to finish that food! I normally just let it peter out over awhile and end up eating super boring meals by the end. Enjoy being home!!

*adding eggplant to grocery list* I always forget!

Glad you made it home safe and sound :D Good job emptying the fridge! When I went to NY last time, my fridge was emptier than it ever has been. I need to run it down more often…if only for the fun of restocking!

So cool you were on the radio!

I know what you mean about that shaky, low blood sugar feeling…I was just feeling it about an hour ago (after a 90-min. session of hot yoga!!!) until I totally scarfed down my lunch!

Mmm.. French toast is a definite winner! I just stumbled upon your blog! It’s fantastic and I adore the feel of it. I haven’t had the chance to make it to Durham yet, although my husband and I just moved to Charlotte, it seems lovely though! Culinary Cultures class? That sounds right up my alley! So jealous you get to learn about such fun stuff! :)

Love the idea of using almond milk for French Toast. Sunny runs always make me feel like a million bucks too. Enjoy your day!

I think your successful Clean-Fridge Mission deserves a round of applause *claps a lot* – how satisfying for you :) whenever I go home, I always end up lugging a huge bag of food with me, I never finish it in time!!
Have a great time at home:)

I came home from the gym today after running other errands and I inhaled my lunch!!! Where did you say you bought your shin sleeves? Great idea with the key! If I go for a run outside, I always bring my cell with me, but I get sick of carrying it-got any tricks for that? :) Hope you’re enjoying this beautiful day!

I feel you, I just got home today and think I was more excited to have successfully cleared out my fridge than to have finished exams. Plus I’m happy to have an excuse to go grocery shopping when I get back :) Have fun at home with your parents and YAY to bday celebrations!!!!!!!

That weather sounds awesome… ours is about the same this weekend! LOVING it!
And what a great tip about how to keep up with your key on your run, I’ve always had issues with that too. I’ll have to try that!

Have fun back at home, Allie! It looks like you did an awesome job on cleaning out that fridge! I am challenging myself to try to not buy groceries for two weeks (with the exception of some necessary produce) because I’ve spent wayyy too much on my last Whole Foods/Trader Joe’s excursions. I didn’t realize that I have a pantry full of food staples that could make some really great meals. They just need a little preparation, like the beans, grains, squash, etc. I am excited to try to do this. I don’t think it will be a problem…just keeping those fingers crossed!
