Do The Mango Tango

in Breakfast, Product Reviews, Snacks

I spent the day looking further into the AllieBar biz (I half gave up on it for a bit), nerd-chatting with Kath about Droid phones, and working out at the gym while watching Oprah. Pretty productive if you ask me :)

I’m not sure how this post got to be so hodge podgy but just bear with me…

Cinnamon raisin is no doubt one of my favorite flavors of bread….I even use it to make savory sandwiches (<— dorky old post alert!!!). The other day, TJ’s was sold out of cinnamon raisin Ezekiel bread so I opted for whole wheat British muffins. Not English muffins, no no, British muffins.

IMG_3373.JPG

They’re alright. They don’t hold a candle to CREEMS (cinnamon raisin Ezekiel English muffins) but they are about 1/3 of the cost. They sure did the trick for my pre-workout snack.

IMG_3367.JPG

As did some coffee

IMG_3368.JPG

IMG_3359.JPG

On my next trip to TJ’s (the following day, mind you), the cinnamon raisin Ezekiel bread was back in stock! Hallelujah!

IMG_3437.JPG

They have more slices than the CREEMs per loaf–so more bang for your buck–but they don’t have the same dense, chewy texture that I love so much.

Still pretty rad nonetheless.

Shown here savory style with a fried egg and crumbled goat cheese.

I’ve been using these single-serving goat cheese medallions recently. They’re great because only one serving is at risk of spoiling vs. the whole package.

IMG_2997.JPG

No goat cheese going to waste over here!

IMG_2999.JPG

Apparently I really love Sunflower Seed Butter…but perhaps a little too much….? It’s time for a few weeks of rehab. This jar was demolished far too quickly, even for me. It clocks in at 2800 calories per jar. It lasted all of 7 days. You do the math.

IMG_3340.JPG

Although I will say they were 2800 kick ass calories though!

IMG_3339.JPG

On a similar note, I have yet to make a bag of TJ’s Just Mango Slices last more than 24 hours. Whewps.

IMG_3326.JPG

There could be far worse addictions, right?

IMG_3327.JPG

I guess I’ll stick to fresh mangos for now….

First I looked in the box for the softest/ripest one.

IMG_3472.JPG

Found it!

IMG_3471.JPG

Cut down both sides of the seed and then cut horizontal and vertical slices. Voila–turtle shell chunks!

*Be sure not to cut the skin of the mango like I did!

IMG_3475.JPG

It was oh so so sweet!

I was going to blend some of the mango into a smoothie but I decided I wanted to enjoy it in it’s whole form. So I added the mango chunks to some kefir and topped it with IKEA muesli.

IMG_3478.JPG

IMG_3479.JPG

The crazy storm finally passed, so I’m gonna head over to the library and perhaps stop by TJ’s for the umpteenth time this week. I’m sure gonna miss living 1/2 mile from TJ’s when we move!

Before I go, most of you know that I respond to comments via email. I rarely ever go back to other blogs to read responses to the comments I leave, so I’ve always thought that email was better for answering questions or just saying hi :) . However, there are definitely times when I think it would benefit others to read my responses in the comments section so I’m going to be doing just that. I found a plug-in that will hopefully send you my response in an email when I respond on the blog. Please let me know if you are not getting responses via email!

I LOVE Ezekiel cinnamon raisin bread – its pretty much the only regular sliced bread I buy now. I love it savoury style as well with grilled veggies. I haven’t tried the CREEMs yet. I love plain Ezekiel English muffins though so I can imagine those would be even better – but I agree, the cost per serving is much more than the regular bread!

Nut butter calories are totally worth it! :) I used to worry about calories a lot but you know what… life is so much more pleasurable just eating healthy, delicious foods without worrying how much of this and that they have.

Those little goat cheese medalions are so cute! I haven’t seen them in stores. Did you get them at Trader Joe’s?

I also have some obsessions with nut butters and dried mangos, which is why I try not to bring them into the house. I love those little spoons. Might try to get some while at IKEA getting the museli. Thanks for the email again about that.

What’s the plug-in called? I would love it if my blog emailed people when I replied to comments but I didn’t think anything like that existed! :)

I have a pack of those British Muffins in my freezer now. I do enjoy them but I haven’t had Ezekiel yet! I keep wanting to try them.

Mangos are so fantastic right now. Like pure candy! My only gripe is feeling like I get gipped every time I cut one up. I feel like there should be so much more in this fruit than there really is. The darn pit makes up about 80% of the entire thing. Hate that!

I wish they had this plug in for blogger! It would make my life 10000000 times easier!

yeah, wordpress and the PLUGINS. jealous.

be careful with touching the mango skin! it can have oils on it similar to the poison in poison ivy –> horrible rash (sadly i learned this from experience!)

Glad you can get more bread! Ha! Speaking of mangoes, I have never gotten over the texture of them. Boo. But hey, you might like this giveaway Alyssa is doing! http://glutenfreemuse.wordpress.com/2010/07/12/product-reviewgiveaway-food-should-taste-good-blue-corn-chips/#comment-176

Hey Allie, just wanted to tell you that I have been making your frozen yogurt recipe and I love it! I don’t really care for yogurt, but I love frozen yogurt. My first batch was a bit of a disaster (ran for over an hour without getting thick/frozen, but a hard layer froze on top of the insert about an inch thick ), but the second batch I chilled in the freezer for an hour before I put it in the ice cream maker and it worked out great!

TJ’s goat cheese medallions are so great! No having to cut into the log that goat cheese is normally formed as. Plus they’re from Trader Joe’s which makes them automatically cooler.

I like doing the savory thing with cinnamon raisin bread too! I bought a lof of pecan cinnamon raisin bread at the farmers market this weekend and made a tarragon chicken salad sandwich for lunch today. I think it would also be amazing bread to use for a grilled Swiss cheese sandwich…oh the possibilities!

Haha, no worries. I’ve definitely finished a whole jar of nut butter within a week before!
I just got a loaf of cinnamon raisin ezekiel bread from TJ’s for the first time. I like it a lot, but I think it would taste so much better toasted. However, I’m worried that toasting it would undo all the hard work it took to sprout the grains in order to preserve nutrients. What do you think?

Mary–

Hahaha so many foods remind me of other bloggers!

Lisa–

I never considered that! I always toast/microwave bread because I like ‘em warm. I read on the website that they are baked at 250* though so toasting can’t be too harmful, right? Also, the package says ‘Try it served warm to release its exceptionally rich nutty flavor.’ I think we’re okay :) This was the where I read about it…http://www.foodforlife.com/info-center-customer-service/faqs.cfm

MareMare–

Glad you’ve been enjoying the homemade tart froyo! That’s strange that it didn’t work the first time. We always use fridge-temp yogurt and it comes out frozen in 20-25 minutes. At least you found a solution!

Thank you for letting us know about that plug in! I always feel worried that somebody isn’t being notified that I replied back to them, so this will definitely help! :D

I have been known to finish off a huge 28 oz jar of peanut butter in a week and a half. Yikes. But, hey, that’s 4700 calories of pure bliss right there. Hah. :D

Ooh you shouldn’t worry about the nut butter calories! You’re not in the least fat, and you have to get calories somewhere (after all your dinners are always salad based) – if I counted up the calories I get from…vegetables (!) I’d probably hit 2800! But then I couldn’t cut them out, cos I need calories :) if that makes sense!? I know you probably know that..bit I’m just sayin’ :)

I’ve demolish my jar of PB & Co chocolate peanut butter in less than a week… Being both addicted to PB and chocolate, I should have known better! I wouldn’t worry too much about the calories if I were you, you seem to spend a whole lot of time on that elliptical! ;)

I have BIG opinions on comment-replies – I really hate it when I have to “check back” for a reply to my comment. I mean it feels bad, but when a blog publishes daily or more, I frankly don’t remember everything in the posts or everything I comment on! You’re quite sensitive of your readers’ needs :)

I think nut butters should come with a buzzer that goes off if you eat more than two servings in a single sitting. I’d probably spend a lot less money of them if I didn’t mindlessly eat half the jar while watching TV. So good though :)

I wish blogger had a plug-in like that!! I either have to go to the person’s blog to find their email address, or leave it in the comments section. Boo.

Hope you have a wonderful Tuesday!

I am dying to make french toast with cinnamon raisin bread! I just wish the Ezekiel stuff wasn’t so darn expensive! :P

Haha the nut butter calories are sooo worth it! I seriously can’t believe I used to shun nut butters because of their calories. I spent way too long missing out!

I grew up in a family where sweet and savoury didn’t ever meet on the sam eplate so the first time I tried a salami & cheese sammie on raisin bread I was amazed at how great it tasted! So I can tots see how you like the cinn bread with savoury stuff.

Love a ripe, sweet, juicy mango!

I often find myself at TJ’s multiple times a week too. Despite the long lines, it’s always worth it. I love their just mango slices and too and just used them recently to make tropical date truffles. You should stop by my blog and check them out. They’re a larabar wanna be.

Can’t wait to check out those goat cheese medallions! I haven’t noticed those yet, but they sound perfect. I hate having to a buy a huge round of goat cheese and risk it getting spoiled.

I’m not sure if your blog set-up is like this, but my blog allows me to reply to comment under the actual blog post itself, but at the same time, also emails my responses to people as well, in case they don’t check back. Maybe you could try that?

Yay for CR ‘Zeke bread–I loves it so much! My fave way to eat it is with cottage cheese, cinnamon and a little pumpkin butter.
