in Breakfast, Fun Stuff, Lunch, Snacks, Trips

As I mentioned, we spent all of yesterday at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in DC. For as long as I can remember we’ve been a tennis playing + watching family. I got my first tennis racquet at a very young age and I distinctively remember going to the local tennis courts every week to play as a family. Growing up, I attended many tennis camps both local and sleep-away. However, I never took it [super] seriously because I was always more interested in becoming an Olympic gymnast :) .

If you come over to our house, there’s a 97% chance that The Tennis Channel is on TV (unless I have the remote, in which case it’s The Food Network channel). Tennis is something we as a family enjoy watching and playing together.

So, when a tennis tournament comes to the DC area, you better believe we’re there to see it!

A Rushed Breakfast:

Due to time constraints, this was all I had time to shovel into my mouth!

IMG_4665.JPG

Kefir, whipped 1% cottage cheese, Cinnamon Puffins and hami melon

IMG_4664.jpg

Cottage cheese is one of my favorite dairy foods. It’s thick, slightly cheesy, and so high in protein. One of my favorite types to get is 1% whipped. It’s different from regular cottage cheese in that it’s not as curdle-y. I’ve only ever seen it made by the Friendship brand.

Note: I like cottage cheese with some fat in it. In my opinion, fat free cottage cheese is gross. 2% is the best but they only make whipped with 1%.

IMG_4666.JPG

I also had a cup of coffee but that went unpictured as I was racing around packing snax for the day….

A date + almond butter sandwich using the butt pieces of the bread.

IMG_4669.JPG

This would have been my biggest nightmare as a child since I loathed bread crust. However, nowadays butt pieces (aka solid crust!) are fine by me.

IMG_4670.JPG

A fresh apricot and candy vitamins (a multi-vitamin gummy and a chocolate calcium chew). I never ever ever ever ever forget these. In fact, I eagerly wait for hours to pass so I can have another one :) .

IMG_4671.JPG

Plus a side of mini sweet peppers

IMG_4672.JPG

IMG_4668.JPG

And then we were off! Yesterday was ‘family day’ so tickets were 4 for $20–a great deal!

IMG_4728.JPG

IMG_4707.JPG

We went around to the practice courts to watch the higher seeded players practice with each other and their coaches. As they are leaving the courts (or just walking around), you can ask for an autograph and/or photograph. It’s an awesome opportunity to meet your favorite stars! Sadly, I think Andy Roddick was there way early because we didn’t see him :( .

We did see John Isner practicing (the American who won the 11 hour long Everlasting Epic Tennis Match at Wimbledon).

IMG_4682.JPG

IMG_4685.JPG

IMG_4686.JPG

We also saw another American, James Blake.

IMG_4736.JPG

We got his autograph! (I’m glad he signed our program, otherwise we’d never remember who’s autograph that is!). Looks like ‘2M’ to me!

IMG_4737.JPG

My mom loves getting photos with the players so I became her personal photog.

Here she is with Xavier Malisse

IMG_4677.JPG

Julien Benneteau

IMG_4714.JPG

and Michael Llodra. It’s okay if these names mean nothing to you.

IMG_4715.JPG

Then it started pouring rain! Fortunately, the storm didn’t last long. The matches were only delayed by about an hour.

IMG_4716.JPG

The snax I packed weren’t enough to fuel me sitting all day, and I started to get hungry. It also got rather chilly from the rain, so I grabbed a decaf coffee and big slice carrot pound cake.

IMG_4719.JPG

I had super high hopes for this bread. I was also hungry enough that even if it tasted kinda bad, I would still love it.

It tasted like shiz. Play-Doh to be exact. You know the distinct smell that Play-Doh has? It was spot on. Blehhh. Despite the wretched taste, I ate about 1/3 of the bread because I kept wanting it to taste good and I was hangry.

IMG_4722.JPG

Courts, all dried up!

IMG_4729.JPG

We ended the day by watching two guys practice together. Here is Gilles Simon serving.

IMG_4740.JPG

Then we came home and I went on a great Puffin-fueled run that I told you about earlier.

***

My parents went back to watch more of the tournament tonight. They’re the super fans of the family that’s for sure.

Tell me: Is there a sport that you and your family enjoy watching and/or playing together? If you could meet any athlete, who would it be?

I am So Jealous… :)

I was a 6.0 USTA player in college – loved tournaments and teaching tennis… I had a ski accident that prevented me from going pro… (my true dream…)

It is one of my bucket list items to attend a grand slam event… preferably Wimbledon! :)

I <3 cinnamon puffins ! :)

That is so cool that your family is so into tennis! When I lived in England, tennis was like their football. It was so cool to be there during Wimbledon, people went crazy!

I love cottage cheese too! That exact brand and kind is my favorite. You’re right, the whipped is the best, but I sometimes have a hard time finding it.

Hope you had a great Monday!

What, no Som?! I’m pretty sure the dude played yesterday and y’all totally missed out on seeing him ‘whip’ the ball.

I can’t believe those two went out again. God Bless that never ending endurance!

And, speaking of ‘everlasting’…ahem. Here’s a tribute to that epic match. I believe this would fall under the ‘Laugh’ category!?!?

Oh, wow, that’s so cool that you got to meet so many tennis players! :D

My family never watched sports together, but I did grow up with Monday Night Football on TV. =)

Aaaww, it looks like you’ve had a fun family day!! I love to watch Tennis but am terrible at playing it. I was on my badminton team in high school and when I try to apply any of that to tennis the ball ends up going WAYY out of the court, haha. It’s fun to just do as a past-time, though. Even if my family gets sick of me constantly hitting it out :-)

I’ve been to the US Open with my mom and sisters — we went in 2001 (right before Sept 11 actually) — it was so exciting to see Gustavo Kuerten (my fave) and Andy Roddick (my sister’s fave). We had a great time watching different matches and watching them on the practice courts.

I agree about the fat free cottage cheese being gross– blech.

Oh and I had my first (quickly followed by me second!) date dipped in AB. I’m proud that I stopped at 2. I could have easily eaten all of them!

My family LOVES tennis – my mom is a physical therapist who treated James Blake’s dad and his mom and mine were good friends for a while! Such nice people!

SO freakin’ cool!! I haven’t been into that many sports, but I love me a good tennis match, and I used to be a competitive figure skater, so that keeps my attention too :D I love love love the idea of dates on bread – so delicious. I love the combo of dates and nut butter :)

Have a great night!

p.s. I only live about an hour outside of DC!!

Mehh. I guess looks can be deceiving… I thought that carrot cake pound cake (what a mouthful… too bad it wasn’t a yummy mouthful) looks quite good. I’ve never had fat-free cottage cheese, always low-fat! But that’s more of an availability issue than a choice.

I’ve already met my favorite athlete–Summer Sanders! And she was awessssome! P.S. How do you keep Puffins in your kitchen without devouring the entire box in a day? Yeah…lesson learned for me. I can’t be trusted with Puffins!

That’s so cool that you got to watch tennis! I am a newbie at it and I really like it so far (that is, when I can actually hit it over the net and still be in the court!).

My family loves hockey, mainly the Vancouver Canucks! The goalie, Roberto Luongo, is my mom’s favorite. Before my dad passed away, my parents used to watch every single game! It was one of those things I remember from my childhood that made everything seem normal, you know? :)

Great post! I’ve never seen whipped cottage cheese before! Looks neat! I’ll have to try it soon! I wonder if they have it in Los Angeles?

My oh my..how are SO many tennis players so freaking attractive?? I swear they’re not human :/
My family are all about the horses – my mum, sister and I watch horse stuff (bar racing) religiously if it’s on TV, we talk horses non stop…I feel sorry for my non-horsey step dad :P
ps – that sandwich – OH MY GOSH! Amazing.

That must be so nice to have something that you can enjoy as a family like that! We liked to watch the Winter Olympics together. Especially hockey so that we could cheer our boys on! :D

Some of those tennis players aren’t too hard on the eyes, eh?

Allie,
Hope you enjoyed the tennis match and meeting the players! I love tennis too and wish I could play more often. I have been taking this Skills and Drills class at the Tennis Club nearby and love it. I get a workout and get to play a bit! But you are inspiring me to get out and play this week:)
And of course always love the food you post. Looks healthy and delicious!

“It’s okay if these names mean nothing to you.” hahhaha that’s what I told my dad and friend when we were at the expo for the Boston Marathon. “I may run into famous running people and get starstruck…it’s okay if you make fun of me as long as you take pictures.”

I played tennis all through high school and LOVED it! And was pretty good too. And now I know no one who plays and I miss it. Fun to see your highlights though. American boy is pretty cute. Just saying, I’d take up tennis again if I got to play with James Blake. ;) You’re lucky mom.

Oh and almond butter and dates… bad news for me. Probably has the same reaction for me that crack and meth have for… druggies? bad comparison but ya know.
