A Killa ‘Dilla

Tater-nana-dillas.

Um yeah. I went there. I totally went there.

I love my bananadillas. When I spotted an ol’ sweet potato sitting innocently on the kitchen counter, I started having visions of tater-nana-dillas dancing through my head. That’s short for sweet potato banana quesadillas.

IMG_6173.JPG

A whole grain wrap.

Mashed sweet potato and maple syrup on one half.

Banana slices and cinnamon on the other half.

IMG_6154.JPG

To quickly make the mashed sweet potato, I pierced the tater with a knife in 3 spots and microwaved it on high for about 4 min.

IMG_6144.JPG

Easy enough, right?

IMG_6148.JPG

Without a panini maker, I turned to the stove. The stove never fails me.

IMG_6157.JPG

IMG_6158.JPG

Pan-pressed to perfection.

IMG_6160.JPG IMG_6165.JPG IMG_6166.JPGIMG_6171.jpg

How could you forget the almond butter?

IMG_6184.JPG

I would normally spread the almond butter inside the ‘dilla but I didn’t want it to get lost with both the banana AND the sweet potato inside. When I spread the almond butter on top, I could really taste every gooey morsel.

Very important stuff, people, very very important.

Can you even imagine what this would taste like with Sunflower Seed Butter (SSB)? I’m finishing up my SSB Rehab Program and I’m thinking after my current jar of almond butter, I’m gonna take the plunge and finally get a jar of SSB. It’s been over a month (!!!).

I’m in withdrawal.

We’ve been loading up on bargain produce from Harris Teeter recently. We usually only go to Harris Teeter for two things: bargain produce and Red Box DVDs. Oh and lotto tickets. Okay, so three things.

The other day, I picked up a huge bag of grape tomatoes for $1.59. Cha-ching!

IMG_6206.JPG

I’d say there are about 3 pints worth in there.

IMG_6207.JPG

I also got a bag of ripe bananas (half of which got sliced up and thrown into the freezer). Perhaps I’ll be making some Avocado Banana Bread this week?

IMG_6213.JPG IMG_6218.JPG

The best bargain was on strawberries–buy 1 get 2 free. So 3 cartons for $4!!

These strawberries are fresh and oh so sweet. Double cha-ching!

IMG_6216.JPG

Unfortunately, these strawberries aren’t organic. However, we got this Environne Fruit and Vegetable Wash from TJ’s, which we’ll be trying out on these strawbs!

Ingredients: purified water, natural cleansing agents (derived from plant oilts), polysorbate-20 (derived from sorbitol/berries), grapefruit seed extract and lemon-orange extract.

IMG_6217.JPG

It claims to safely remove chemical residues including pesticides, waxes, and oils. I won’t be able to report if it’s effective or not (since I won’t know!) but I figure it’s better than nothing.

Tell me: Do you wash your produce with anything other than water? You do wash your produce, right!? Please say yes.

I’m laying low tonight to recuperate from my Chicago adventures. We were invited to a potluck dinner at a family friend’s house but I decided to stay home to get some peace and quiet and work on yet another cover letter. I’ll be back tomorrow with an update on the job sitch.

Yummy looking quesadillas!

I definitely ALWAYS wash my produce. I use that exact wash bottle from TJ. Even thought I can’t tell if it’s working or not, I always feel better about doing it.

I use water to wash my produce- I never really looked too closely at the other wash options (like the bottle you showed) but I think I may..And hooray for bargain produce! Looks like you got a ton fo stuff for a great deal!

I wash my produce but it’s a pretty cursory job….yet anothe reason I should probably switch to organic!

I usually wash my produce. But sometimes I get lazy. And one day it will spell the end of me. haha

Oh my word, that quesadilla thingy looks SO good. I kind of want to run out to the grocery store at nearly 10 at night to get the ingredients and make a killer late night snack. But, after my eating adventures in Virginia I pretty much need to live on iceburg lettuce and water so I will refrain, lol.

I use Citrus Magic’s Veggie Wash (http://www.amazon.com/Citrus-Magic-Fruit-Veggie-Wash/dp/B00005UCPZ). Been using it for years! I literally will not eat fruit or veggies unless I wash it with this stuff! Essentially the same as the TJ’s version, but in a spray. I think it makes all the difference in the world – to me it’s like washing your hands with soap vs. washing them without.

WOW, Look at that quesadilla! Incredible. And have I mentioned how MUCH I LOVE YOUR PHOTOS??!! Oh sweet camera fairy, please bring me a t2i soon!!!!!
And the produce bargains were fantastic. Mmmm, I want those strawberries!!
I usually just rinse our produce with agua, but most of it is organic so hopefully that’s a-ok!

Hippierunner–
I’ve never used fruit + veggie wash either (before this bottle).

I actually never washed any fruit until last week while at home and my dad was apalled. I eat a lot of fruit so I guess I should start washing my fruit to be safe!
Very awesome ‘dilla recipe, can’t wait to try sometime! With SSB!

I might just be dreaming of that quesadilla tonight ….. :-)

I wash my produce with something similar. You just soak it in water with a drop or two (depending on surface area) and then eat it, right? I’m not sure that sweet potato would taste good with banana but I definitely would have done a taterdilla with PB. :D

Okay, no recipe :)

Love this. I really have to get more of the big sweet ‘taters. Don’t judge – but I’ve been buying the frozen pre-cut/cubed ones…:(…they’re still sweet potatoes though!!! No added ingredients or anything…just the prep work done. I know – I suck.

I’ve just been washing with water…but man, I have to wash more carefully…that’s probably why my digestive system is screwed up…and I don’t/can’t buy organic – not around here and more expensive.

I’m a new reader, and might I say I love your recipes. I always wash and soak my produce (shouldn’t everyone?). I’ve been washing my produce with salt (For veggies, I rub the outside with salt. For fruit, I soak it in saltwater). It’s a habit I developed from my parents. Not sure if it works though!

That sounds *so* good! I agree, you don’t want the almond butter to get lost in there!

Almost always wash my produce. =P Some things sometimes miss the faucet, if I’m in a rush (like apples) but smaller things like berries and grapes ALWAYS get a rinse.

I love the combo!
I only wash it with water, but if I could find something like that, I would. Only for not organic produce, from a grocery store.

2) I don’t really ever wash my produce :P I’m a terrible person!!

just the other day, my coworkers and I were talking about sweet potatoes and banana and one of the guys said “wouldn’t that be good to mash sweet potatoes and banana together?!” I was like “wow, waaayyyy ahead of you on that one!” LoL, such a fantastic combo!

I’ve made a Caribbean dish before with plenty of spices, sweet potato, and banana, so they are definitely a great match. :) I also have made individual breakfast sweet potato pies that were unbelievalby delicious. I’ll send you the recipe. :) Have a great, relaxing Sunday!

I love getting bargain produce and it looks like you got some great deals!

I’ve often seen that fruit and veg wash stuff but never figured out if it’s worth it or not. I suppose, like you say, it’s better than nothing.

You’re supposed to wash fruits and veggies? WHAT?!?!?! Oh the things I have learned on your blog :)

I do just use water, and I had a good veggie brush for a while but it started to look, well, grody so I threw it out and haven’t bought another one.

That dilla looks so good — and your sweet potato was such a cute U shape too!

That looks awesome! Your blog always makes me ravenous, and that’s not a bad thing! And of course I wash my produce, but unfortunately not with soap, just a scrubbie pad.

Hmmmm, I have an idea for a pumpkin-dilla!!! :) Yes! I wash my produce…even the outsides of avocados + cantaloupes. They’re always so dirty and I figure if you’re cutting into it, it’s bringing the dirt inside!

Killer deal on the strawbs! Cant wait to see what you come up with to use them all!

I do wash my produce… mostly with water… sometimes I’ll get the scrubber out!

I have to compliment on the strategically placed tater and banana in the background of the photos – that’s effort! That combo sounds utterly amazing.

& yes I wash my produce!! I’m not friends with people who don’t ; )

I use Fit brand fuit and veggie wash. It’s also made from natural/plant derived ingredients. We mostly buy organic fruits and veggies, but we still wash everything (even though, as you mentioned, I guess we’ll never really know if it works :)
