Bird’s Eye View

in Dessert, Dinner, Photography, Snacks

Smoked salmon may be the one food standing between me and vegetarianism. Oh wait, that’s a lie. There’s also shrimp….and ahi tuna….and scallops….

…I’m getting distracted.

Back to smoked salmon. It’s buttery, silky, and soft. The best part? Ya don’t have to cook it. Just rip open the package and dig in.

Is it just me or do those lettuce leaves look like roses? Distracted again.

Last night, I made a smoked salmon veggie wrap using a whole grain wrap, grape tomatoes, expired Laughing Cow cheese (yep…still good!), smoked salmon and spring mix.

IMG_6429.JPG

It was more like a salad that happened to have a wrap around it.

IMG_6431.JPG

Food Styling Tip: to keep your wraps intact, break a toothpick in half and stick them in the wraps vertically as shown below. Just don’t forget to remove the toothpicks before you take a bite!

IMG_6433.JPG

I didn’t realize until after the photo shoot that there was a lady in the adjacent condo tower watching me from her balcony.

What? Not everyone stands on a chair to photograph their dinner?!

IMG_6441.JPG

I mean, how else would you get the bird’s eye view?

IMG_6442.JPG

Before dinner, I snacked on a soft ‘n’ juicy guava. I’m going to go ahead and declare this my absolute favorite fruit in the whole wide world. I’m serious. No ties for first place. Guava sits alone on the top of my favorite fruit list.

IMG_6427.JPG

For dessert, I ate some sugar and butter in the form of a gigantic sweet adzuki bun.

IMG_6445.JPG

I kept ripping off chunks until it was about 3/4ths gone. I was under the spell of butter. It’s powerful, I’m telling you.

IMG_6443.JPG

I had a plum while flipping through an issue of Bon Appetit from the library.

IMG_6447.JPG

The first thing I saw?

IMG_6448.JPG

If you don’t have 20/20 vision, here are the important parts:

  • For the most part, washes that use all-natural organic ingredients won’t hurt you.
  • While natural produce washes may be safer, it hasn’t been definitively proven that they clean better than water.
  • The FDA recommends washing all raw produce with water, using a vegetable scrub brush on firm-skinned produce like cucumbers, and drying with a paper towel.

So there ya go. I guess I need a veggie-scrubber in addition to my new harmless (but maybe useless?) fruit & veggie wash.

Tell me: Do you have a food styling tip to share? Where do you photograph your food (if you do)?

Guava is amazing. And your wrap looks absolutely like the most awesome thing ever. I think that fish and seafood may be the only thing stopping me from becoming absolutely vegetarian! I want a wrap like yours :(

Let natural light do the work–photograph wherever you can find the most/best lighting. For me that is sometimes on the floor by my back door. Hey! It works!

smoked salmon was one of my favourite foods before I went vegan – for my birthday once, my gran gave me a 1kg package :P
hmm..good light is my only tip!

Thought it was a chocolate filled bun? What exactly is inside?

Mmm.. I totally agree – smoked salmon and cream cheese is an award winning combination :) My mom and I like to eat it on really dark rye bread. Yum!

Food styling tip? Hah I am a mediocre photographer at best and just have a simple point and shoot… so my tip is to find a window with some good natural lighting :P

Can I just say that you look SO cute on that chair? Haha.

Smoked salmon is incredible and one of my favorite things. Whenever I eat it, I just feel like my body is absorbing all of those healthy fats and omega 3’s and I feel like I start to take on that same bright and beautiful glowing hue that the fish has. :)

I’ve never been too convinced with produce wash. Something about it just seems so unnatural to me. Water seems to work just fine.

haha that is funny – i sometimes forget that not everyone photographs their food either.

I usually take my pics on the bay window in my living room. it’s painted white so it just works.

Smoked Salmon and Shrimp are def what’s keeping me from making the leap from Pescatarian to Vegetarian. So delicious!!

Seafood is the one thing between me and being totally veggie, too. Chicken, cow, pig — no appeal. But fish? Ahhhhh yum!

Seafood is the one thing stopping me from being a “real” vegetarian too. I don’t eat much of it, but when I do…I go big or go home :)

I take my foodie pics outside right now, and I’m worried about going back to school! Hopefully I’ll get my SLR before then…hopefully :)

Happy hump day love!!

next time you should totally wave to the neighbor. hahaha. that’s great.

i eat fish once a week, guess i’m a fake vegetarian. oh wellz!

Take a pic of your neighbor next time :)

Food styling tip: have nice dishes — some pics of food on really busy, colorful plates do not look appetizing. (Allie yours always look nice, so please don’t think I’m trying to hint that your plates aren’t beautiful). :)

And yes, I need to get a new veggie brush. They work great!

That adzuki bun just looks more delicious in each post ;) Haha. I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets mags from the library! I think it’s such a great idea. I try to photograph my food in natural sunlight, but when it’s dark/cloudy I rely on my super-bright kitchen light. When restaurant lighting fails me, however, I have no vice :P

Enjoy your day!

Hahaha! People just don’t get it. I wish I had tips to share. I could use some myself actually. I know camera settings and all that…but for how to get interesting shots, not so much.

My apartment has the worst lighting, but I have good luck in my dining room directly under the light. I think I also need a better camera.

I’m so awful…I usually just rinse my produce off with water. So bad. :/

I was doing the same thing as you this week when I saw the neighbors outside, so I quickly went back in. I need to get over what others think about me!

I think your pictures look great! Natural light is the best! I only have time to take pictures at night and it makes my colors all wonky b/c I’m bumping my ISO up so high with indoor lighting.

Now that I’ve gotten into food photography I want to build up my collection of dishes.

I’ve always wondered about veggie washes. Thanks for the info! Looks like I need a scrubber too.

Not a great food stylist myself, but I really do love using the macro setting on my point and shoot to really get the texture of whatever it is. (Usually baked goods with me, haha)

I’d love to take a food styling class – that would be super fun! I try to use as much natural light as possible and simplify my plates/bowls.

Where do you get the smoked salmon? I love sushi, looks delish!

Reply

27 Allie August 25, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Jenny–
I got it from Trader Joe’s. I like that they sell them in 3 oz. pouches so I don’t have to buy a whole lb!

I couldn’t go without seafood either. Especially in sushi!

I usually take my photos either outside or by my window. My house has terrible natural lighting!

Have a great day! :)

Trader Joe’s has the best smoked salmon, in my opinion. The relatively low sodium content is a huge plus for me. I have yet to find a brand with a lower amount.

Those buns are incredibly dangerous to be around! The taro and coconut+buttercream ones are insane. And people think that asian food is healthy…
