After returning from my dish extravaganza yesterday, I was in serious need of some snax. Dish shopping is tiring when you’re lifting up heavy plates and imagining how they would look in photos with various foods.
I had a plate of dates with coconut butter. We finally finished our jar of almond butter. Now, what time is it?!
It’s sunflower seed butter time! I’m comin’ outta rehab
.

I also finished off a tub of plain yogurt (~1 cup) with a banana. I love when bananas are at this stage–ripe with plenty of brown spots but not mushy yet.
Love green bananas? I read in the latest issue of Health magazine that slightly green bananas have more resistant starch. The starches turn into sugar as the banana ripens.

Workout:

Dinner was a dish prepared by Peter, Head Chef at Peter’s Kitchen. It’s been awhile since his dishes have been featured here. I had something on my mind already but my dad insisted on cooking something for me….in less than 10 minutes.

I’m going to try and get him to write a guest post since so many of you ask for tutorials/recipes. Stay tuned.
Here’s a preview:

After a humongous dinner, I somehow made room for some cantaloupe. So ripe and so sweet.

Then, I picked up a package from the HLS roomie Sarah!

Sarah is one of the first bloggers I met (back in Jan ‘09 when I was a blogless reader). We met up at a restaurant in Hillsborough, NC with Kath, Matt, and a few other readers. Several months later, after I started LLE, we began to communicate more and more. We sat next to each other at HLS 2009. Then in the Fall of 2009, we watched Food (Th)Inc. together, organized an NC blogger meet-up, and then had several more meet-ups! You can see all of my blogger meet-up posts on my Favorite Posts page.
Sarah has always been one of my biggest cheerleaders…at school, with Live Laugh Eat and in life. I’m so sad that we live hundreds of miles apart now
.

P.S. I think Sarah has the best handwriting of any doctor I’ve ever known. I bet pharmacists love her prescription slips
.
She is a big AllieBar fan too, so I brought her some when I went to HLS 2 weeks ago. She sent me this delicious granola made in Chapel Hill, NC as a thank you.

I’ve gotten Little Red Wagon Granola once before when I was living in Hilton Head. Of course I tried the Carrot Cake flavor. <–during my first week of blogging (!!).
I was excited to try another flavor last night, Chunky Monkey. It has banana chips, chocolate chips, pecans and almonds. Mmmm!

I opened the bag immediately.

….and went back for more and more and more…

…and more. I’m not sure if there are any chocolate chips or pecans left in the bag!! Thank you, Sarah–I miss you too!

Yesterday, I asked you where you take your food photos (if you do). Well, I thought it would be fun to show you where I take MY photos. You know, so you can see where the magic happens
.
Usually, I go out onto the balcony for the best lighting….

…and get tangled in that hairy plant every time!
It has chairs that I can stand on to get a bird’s eye view….while getting some funky glances from the neighbors.

I occasionally use this little table when the sun is shining directly onto the bigger table. I try to avoid direct sunlight because it can be quite harsh.
Have you ever wondered why some of my photos have a blue blur in the background? Yeah, it’s that darn beach chair right over there.

If I feel like it, I typically grab a placemat on my way out. Don’t ask why the tags are still on.

If I’m lazy or don’t have the ability/time to take everything onto the balcony (such as when I’m doing step by step photos for a recipe), I use this lovely window sill by the kitchen table. It only gets good lighting during certain hours of the day though.

I would love it a whole lot more if those grey bars weren’t there.

Remember several months ago when all of my food was photographed on top of a concrete slab? Yeah, that was right here on the ‘porch’ of my apartment at school.
That apartment was like a cave and the only place I could get a good amount of light (or any light at all) was outside on the porch…or on my bed HA! It wasn’t the most modern looking apartment but we all know the air conditioning definitely worked!!

I went out there every single day, even when it was snowing.
I’m gonna have to find a whole new set of good photography spots once we move to the new house. The kitchen has a ton of windows though so it should be easy. Hopefully I won’t have to go outside when it’s frigid!!

Tell me: How do you like your bananas? What’s your favorite granola flavor?

I like my bananas perfectly ripe…on the day they get their first brown spot! Not that I pay that much attention to them.. I really like this d ried blueberry almond granola with agave my friend makes. I love the way agave tastes!!
I love my naners a tad unripe. I read that it’s good too! Fav granola flavA? Honey bunches of oats or Strawberry Yoghurt Muesli From BOKOMO
I love how food bloggers look for good photography spots and go as far as to go out into SNOW to do it – dedication!
Can’t wait for your dad’s post, yay!
ohh I have that green circle placement, except in bright pink! Where did you get yours?
must be the sweet tooth!
I like the reeeeal ripe bananas, almost mushy
Granola wise – maple-y stuff, i LOVE maple!
I can’t really eat raw bananas because they make my throat hurt a little! I think I have a mild allergy… cooked bananas are fine though, so I suppose my favourite way to eat bananas is in banana bread
(Which I happen to LOVE)
And I am not a granola girl. People find it hard to believe.. but I would much rather have a bowl of oatmeal than granola. If it’s the crunch I am after, I head for the box of cereal
<3 Tat
That picture of your uncle with the broccoli is sooo cute!!! I want to use that as my blog background!
Mmmmmm, that granola sounds and looks awesome but did you say carrot cake flavor???? Have you tried a Carrot Cake version of an Alliebar yet? Hmmm, I’m sure you’ve played around with it but that could be a great flavor to throw in your mix someday.
Hope you have a wonderful day Allie!
I love seeing where you take all those great photos!
I like my bananas perfectly ripe to over ripe!!
This post is making me nervous!! My apartment this year has a whole wall of windows, but they don’t get much sunlight and all I have to go outside on is a fire escape. Eeek!! I’m sure I’ll figure something out, but I’m glad I got a camera that will make things better too. That was my main incentive for getting it so quickly!!
I love bananas in oatmeal. They make it so creamy!!
I love nanners! They have to have some brown spots as well! Love them frozen as well! I actually have quite the collection growing in my freezer and would like to make something with them, but need a good recipe without many ingredients…Fav granola flavor- vanilla almond, but love em all!
I love my bananas ripe…multiple brown spots are cool with me! Not so ripe that they’re mushy, but ripe enough that they’re not at all “crunchy.” There’s nothing I hate worse than a crunchy green banana! BLECH!
I’ve seen that granola many times at Fresh Market. It looks sooo good. I’ve had the ‘Cosmopolitan’ flavor, which has almonds and apricots in the mix, and it was some of the best granola I’ve ever eaten! I could NOT keep my hand out of the bag. Little Red Wagon is beast!
One of my favorite granola flavors is any kind with chocolate. Chocolate chips or and infusion of cocoa powder [or both!]. And I don’t think I’ve ever had peanut butter granola, but that sure sounds amazing.
That granola is the perfect mix for me! Banana chips and chocolate, yes please!
That granola looks delish!
I loved seeing where you take your pics! I take most of mine on the windowsill, although I haven’t been taking many food pics at all lately.
I’m sorry, but green bananas should not be eaten. They taste horrible! They need to be yellow with some brown spots (like in your pic). Those taste the best!
So I met and had dinner with the sweet lady behind Red Wagon and she started super small! She rented time slots in a certified kitchen and makes all her granola from scratch. She started super small, just selling the granola at the farmer’s market and then in food co-ops in NC. Then she was picked up by Whole Foods, but just 6 stores at first. But the more popular she became, the more stores carried her. She was then able to create her own certified kitchen, and hire a staff to help. You could totally do this!!
Your dad looks so cool!
I like my bananas the same as you – starting to get spotty but not mushy yet. And I recently bought a box of Nature’s Path hemp granola and I think it’s safe to say that it’s the best granola EVER . Yum!
Freya–
I got it at Target!
Tatiana–
I used to be allergic to bananas too. It went away a couple years ago. Cooked bananas are great too though.
I love that second placement in the pile – the one that is checkered beautiful colours! So fun and bright!
I bet there will be tons of photo spots in the new kitch! Can’t wait for ‘em!
My preferred banana would be perfectly yellow, no green on it and no brown spots. But if I had to choose otherwise I’d prefer a little green than a little brown. Once it goes brown I start saving it for baking if my boyfriend doesn’t eat it first!
I don’t know if I have one favourite kind of granola but I tend to lean towards tropical tasting ones with dried fruit and coconut. Love that!
love banana chips!! And haha you changed your font!
Gabriela–
You’re new camera will be able to take photos in your apartment….don’t worry! I wish I had mine when I was at school. It would have saved a lot of headache such as trying to beat the sunset at 4:30pm! You’ll be fine though.
Meg–
You’ve heard of banana soft serve, right? Just one ingredient in that one! Also, I made banana almond butter ‘ice cream sandwiches’ with them–so good!
Jordan–
.
I agree, crunchy green bananas leave a funky taste in my mouth. I’ve seen the Cosmopolitan flavor too. I would love to try ALL of them
Marlow–
REALLY!? I should contact her and get some advice. That’s really cool–thanks for letting me know. I never got to give you a sample of AllieBars while I was still in NC
Kelly–
That’s the newest one in the collection. Can you believe I got it for $1.29?! I was so excited. Thanks for the placemat appreciation.
My favorite granola flavor is country pumpkin spice! I recently mentioned the new batch I bought on my blog and I can’t get enough of it.
Jean–
I love that granola too!! If it’s the same one I’m thinking of…it has those crunchy corn pop-like balls?
I love bananas plain (yes, boring, I know) or in banana bread! I really really really really want to try an Alliebar, tell me what I need to do to make that happen
Yup, that’s it! SO good.
aw i love the deck! nothing like enjoying breakfast with the birds chirping and the sun shining
If I’m going to putting my bananas IN something, the spottier the better. However, if I’m going to eat the bananas plain, I like em with an ever so slight tinge of green
hahaha.. i love your title. it is fun to see where the magic happens. my new house has a ton of natural light. i hope you find some good new spots.
i want to eat at peter’s kitchen!
i like my bananas just before they start to spot, but with not a hint of green.
fave granola is alliebars crumbled. no, really!
Unfortunately I’m not a green banana fan. I like them all yellow with a little bit of brown!
That granola looks delish girl….you know what though…the best granola I ever tasted was when I made your pumpkin pecan granola. I can’t wait to make that again!! I’m a bad granola maker though..I never keep a close enough watch on the oven :p
My favorite granola flavors are anything with lots of nuts and coconut.
Thanks for sharing the pics of where you take pictures. I like seeing them on blogs because it’s interesting.
If I was blogging and was still in college, my pictures would all come out dark. My dorm room in San Diego State was like a prison, only 1 window but we could only open about 2 inchs wide
I like green bananas – at least ones that have more green than yellow. I get SO grossed out by the ones that are colored like the one you ate.
That granola sounds BOMB. I would love some of that!! I really need to work on making some of my own. What a sweet roomie!
I like my bananas to be ripe like that for when I use them in oatmeal, but I like them less ripe for my yogurt messes and for just eating them plain. I had no idea about the starch thing though… is resistent starch bad?
That granola looks so good! I love that it has banana chips in it. Those are my FAVE!
Ugh finding good lighting can be such a royal pain! At home the lighting in our house sucks, so I’m hoping that the lighting at my apartment is decent!
Kind of in love with that broccoli photo:)
Hi Allie!!
. I have recently discovered granola by Milk and Honey and have loved every single one of their flavors! It is pricey, but well worth it!
I like my bananas ripe, but not mushy. As far as granola flavors go, I am not picky
I bet the nurses love Sarah’s handwriting too…I hate when a doc asks me what another doc wrote in their note except: 1) Signatures don’t look like anything, so I have no idea which doc wrote what. 2) I can’t read the writing anyway to find out what they said. COMPUTERS PEOPLE, let’s use them.
