Last night my dear friend Mari came to visit! She and her dad are driving from Boston, MA to Austin, TX (!!). Mari and I have a lot in common. She loves to run, she has endured many running-related injuries, she’s a Craigslist enthusiast, and she graduated from college last year feeling directionless.
Needless to say, we always have plenty to talk about when we’re together.
Mari was one of my many flatmates when I studied abroad in London (8 girls in one teeny tiny flat). We interned at the same company over there too. We immediately hit it off and became very good friends. I’m not kidding when I say our flat (AKA apartment) was teeny tiny. I’m pretty sure it was a fire code violation. We were jammed in there like sardines. You can see a photo of our Harry Potter closet-of-a-room in my London Study Abroad Photo Album.

(Please don’t get me wrong. I am not complaining about the size of our living quarters, simply commenting. All 8 of us grew to love our flat a lot. After all we were students living in a posh area of the city–we were lucky to even have beds to sleep in.)
Here we are with two other flatmates while touring Cambridge University.

I stayed with Mari when I went to Boston for the Healthy Living Summit in 2009. You can read about our adventures here and here!
Oh yeah, and she was my partner in crime on Halloween back in 2008

Onto the food.
We went out to The Counter last night for dinner with my parents. The Counter is the 21st century’s bold answer to the classic burger joint….burger options are only limited to your imagination.

We got some coupons in the mail so we decided it would be a great night to try out the restaurant.
To be honest, as of a couple weeks ago, my parents and I thought this place was just any ol’ burger place. Boy were we wrong!

We snapped a few photos while waiting for our table.

My dad looked over the menu.

The menu is actually quite simple. You choose what you want: protein, cheese, toppings (so many options!!), sauce, and a bun or greens.

The Counter uses humanely raised and handled meat.

They also have already brainstormed menu options to choose from.

We started off with a trio of sweet potato fries, regular fries and crispy onion strings.

It came with three sauces: BBQ, Ranch Dressing, and Apricot Sauce. I added ketchup to that plate!

I ate my fair share of sweet potato fries and crispy onion strings. They were phenomenal.

Mari and my parents snuck bites as I was trying to get a good photo
.

Peter appears to be very excited to have the night off from his chef duties at Peter’s Kitchen. Perhaps a little too excited?

Mari ordered a Greek-inspired burger with 1/3 lb. beef, roasted red peppers, feta cheese, olives, greens, and tzatziki sauce.

My Momma ordered a 1/3 lb. beef burger with brie cheese, jalapenos, roasted red peppers, greens, and sun-dried tomato vinaigrette.

My Dad ordered a 1/3 lb. beef burger with lettuce, tomato, red onions, cucumbers, applewood smoked bacon, Danish blue cheese and honey mustard sauce.

To take advantage of the coupon, I ordered a Asian Veggie Signature Burger Bowl. It came very close to what I would have selected had I built my own bowl.
1/3 lb. Housemade Veggie Patty, organic mixed greens, carrot strings, chopped red onion, grilled pineapple, roasted red peppers, scallions, with a ginger soy glaze on the side.

I’m gonna go ahead and say this is the absolute best veggie burger that has ever entered my mouth. It even surpassed the amazing veggie patty from Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant–in fact, it kicked it off my veggie burger radar, completely.
Wow. Wow. Wow. I was blown away. I wish I had saved a bite so I could’ve brought it back home and analyzed the ingredients. I must go back and order this again!

Dim lighting=Fuzzilicious photos.
…but I want you to see how real it is!! No weird/sketchy ingredients.

Demolished.

So so stuffed…but in the best way possible.
We came back, chatted like old times, reminisced about our London days, and then hit the hay.

Tell me: What is the best burger (meat or veggie) that has ever entered your mouth? Did it come from a restaurant? A box? A fast food joint? I don’t judge burger preferences…honestly, I don’t at all

Happy Friday!

Who would’ve thought a burger place could be so good!?
To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever had a decent burger..I honestly can’t remember one! Actually thayt’s not true – I made Emily’s black bean burgers, and they were awesome
That looks delicious! I’ve never ordered a veggie burger anywhere, but that one might be worth it…looks like there are TONS of goodies in there! I do like Red Robin for all their options, although their meat seem a little eh. But salsa and jalepenos on a burger? Yes please!
I love seeing pictures of the UK on American blogs, it’s nice to see something familiar (obv I’m from the UK!!). Looks like you had a fab night out.
woahhh that looks incredible! so wholesome and real! ..gotta say, ive only stuck to the box. Dr. Praeger’s are usually in my freezer. ..i need to get out more (sigh)
Oh my gosh that all looks soooo amazing!! hmmm..the best burger I’ve ever eaten…probably during a camp out. I can’t remember which one or when exactly but all I know is that whenever I think “burger” I remember taking a bite of it at a camp site. But that was before my veggie-lovin-red meatless days.
PS- LOVE the Minny outfit!
yay! your photos took me back to my own london study abroad. i would give anything to go back to that place in time. you make a cute minnie! the counter looks good, we had one here but it went out of business before i could try it.
Two of my all time faves (both can be picked up in TJ’s) are the Dr. Praeger’s veggie burger, which I heard was awesome for years before I tried it, and a Southwest lime chicken burger. I might not have the name exactly right, but it’s from Trader Joe’s and it’s delicious.
The best veggie burger I’ve ever had? Hmmm….I don’t know that I’ve ever ordered one in a restaurant because I usually want to try something a little more different!! But I LOVE Sunshine burgers. They’re so hearty and delicious!!
Apricot Sauce? For sweet potato fries?? Sounds too good to be true!
Wow, that place looks amazing!! I love that you photographed everyone else’s burgers too–shows the variety you can get from a single restaurant!
As odd as it may sound the best burger I ever had was the veggie burger from Ruby Tuesday. I don’t know what they put in there, but it’s so hearty and delicious!
Meg and MareMare–
I love Dr. P’s too (in fact there’s a box in my freezer), but this burger is in a whole different league. I must figure out the recipe!!
Gabriela–
That’s how I usually feel too…BUT I am determined to find the best veggie burger now. Or at least one that can even compete with this one.
I LOVE the Counter! They opened one in Chicago right about a year before I moved away and it was definitely one of our favorite places to go, although it’s a little expensive for what it is. This may not be my favorite, but my most memorable veggie burger was at this little tiny hole in the wall greasy spoon fast food place in the middle of NOWHERE, Michigan (long description!) that had a very unassuming menu. I was going to order a grilled cheese but the guy said “if you’re a vegetarian you should try our veggie burger, we make them ourselves” and MAN it was GOOOOOOD. I was shocked that a place like that would even serve veg burgers, let alone make them that delicious from scratch. Bomb-tastic!
Delish!!! I’ve seen so many people eat there, and I’m JEALOUS!!!
I made a lentil quinoa burger that I completely fell in love with! I love burger salads loaded with pickles, tomatoes, mustard and ketchup! Have a great weekend!
Woah! I’ve NEVER seen a place like that before. It looks incredible!
Burgers + restaurants never seem to sit well with me, because I always think that a home-made burger is better than any burger you could get out… but those look so SO good. I’m jealous
<3 Tat
That burger place looks like HEAVEN. Unfortunately I haven’t had any burgers of late, so I couldn’t tell you… And veggie burgers aren’t usually available here.
The Counter looks awesome….I’m obsessed with the build your own burger type places! My favorite burger= anything from Morningstar.
The Counter makes GREAT veggie burgers! And they are SO filling! I think their veggie burger and the veggie burger from Barneys (gourmet hamburger place in Berkeley) are the two best I’ve had. I try to take people to Barneys a lot because it makes me so happy when my friends and family members order a really good veggie burger and declare their love.
You and I must have similar tastes–when I saw the photo of the menu my eye went straight to the Asian Veggie and I thought, “That one! I’d order that one!” and wouldn’t ya know but when I scrolled down there it was!
Sadly, I have yet to find the best veggie burger I’ve ever tasted. They’ve all fallen a little short in some way–too salty, too spicy, trying too hard to be meat–but I’ll keep trying.
I looove dr. praeger’s. I’m trying anoff brand right now that I found in the store, half the price of dr p but also not as delish. I dunno if I have a fav, but ones from this pub near my old college campus were really good. Not enough veg though. I can be so picky!
Haha, you look so cute in your halloween costume!
Holy cow that place looks amazing! I LOVE that it uses hormone/antibiotic free and humanely raised beef. I’ve been considering starting to eat red meat again as long as it’s pasture raised and hormone free!
I haven’t really eaten a “wow” veggie burger yet. I really want to try Dr. P and Sunshine burgers!
That looks like an awesome place. I love a good burger — nothing beats it, and those sw potato fries look killer!!!
My fave place to get a burger is actually Red Robin — the fries are awesome and I love their Royale burger with a fried egg on top
Wow, I wonder what they put in that veggie burger? Could you tell what it was made out of!? I want oneeee!! lol
Dana xo
OKay, I am unable to comment on anything other than that Halloween costume. How cute are you two??? haha
Veggie burgers are my favorite! If it were alright to eat nothing but burgers I would do just that! My favorite veggie burger would have to be from this place in my hometown in LA that was on the Food Network’s DDD show-not sure they make them there but with the toppings and house ketchup it is amazing! Aw man, now I want one!
I love the idea of that restaurant and what you ordered looked awesome.
that’s so sweet she came to see you! i wish i have someone to see me now too );
The best burger I’ve had so far…is from Umami, I think. In-N-Out was damn good too, but I think I just mostly felt happy about the price. Wow. She drove ALL The way from Boston! That’s quite a drive!
And Allie…you are so. damn. cute. in that costume! >__<
I love this blog!
so real, and yummy food pics.
I really want to study abroad.. how did you do it, through what program, if you dont mind me asking?
As for burgers, i’ve had some pretty tasty turkey ones. But also a delish homemade garden pattie.
Its a really basic recipe with all natural stuff, so good
I love the flashback photos! Studying abroad must of been amazing.
That burger place sounds so cool!! And the veggie burger.. yum!
Allie! I loved this post!!! Fun pictures of you and your friend in London, adorable pics of your parents, the food looked amazing, just a great recap! Hmm..best veggie burgers would have to be when we went to Washington and British Columbia. The restaurants there are so good because there are so many people in that area that are little hippies and love good veggie options and burgers, so I had one in particular that was so incredible. I want to go back
In your princess land of Genovia there is a really, really good “build your own burger” place. Next time, we’ll go there too!
