Ooey Gooey Soft and Chewy

With the move date pushed back a week and 90% of our kitchen already in the new house, I deemed it necessary to stock up on some food. I scored some great deals last night!

In my grocery basket:

1. Amy’s V-Burgs were buy 1 get 1 free. I got California (new to me) and All-American (not new to me). In the store bought v-burg category, I like Amy’s more than Dr. P, Boca and Morningstar.

2. Athenos Feta Cheese for 40 cents (I had a coupon from my HLS swag bag for a free container up to $5.99).

3. Van’s Waffles! I haven’t had waffles in forever. I’ve been missing Waffle Mountains oh so much. These weren’t on sale but you can’t win ‘em all.

4. What’s that blob? Dates! Read on…

Before we go any further, can we stop and appreciate this UPC label?

Last night Harris Teeter won over Trader Joe’s for one reason and one reason only.

The Red Box Machine.

We rented The Back Up Plan starring J. Lo. It was just meh. Cute but not a-must-see in my opinion.

Medjool date vs. Deglet Noor date

I picked up 3 organic Medjool dates from a bulk bin at HT last night. I love bulk bins because I can get as little as I want/can afford.

IMG_7105.JPG

According to Wikipedia, the deglet noor date (on the right) is one of more than 100 varieties of dates but it’s the most known in the world.

Deglet noor dates are not as sweet and moist as Medjool dates. Here’s a comparison chart I found from Brown Date Garden.

Picture 18.png

The dates I’ve been eating are the deglet noor variety from Costco (I’ve also found Medjool dates at Costco and TJ’s but they are twice as expensive).

IMG_7111.JPG

Ooey, gooey, soft and chewy.

Now I know why Medjool dates are more expensive than the Deglet Noor dates. They tasted like sweetened pumpkin puree! It took every bone in my body to save the last one for a daylight photo.

…the sacrifices I make for this blog! :)

This morning marked the return of the Waffle Mountain!

IMG_7114.JPG

Topped with Chobani 0% Greek yogurt, banana, cacao nibs, and chia seeds. There was not a lick of nut butter in the house to swipe on my waffle. I’ll take the blame for that one.

IMG_7130.JPG IMG_7117.JPG IMG_7122.JPG IMG_7133.JPG IMG_7136.JPG

I usually eat these like a slice of pizza but I keep a fork and knife on hand just incase things start to fall apart. That, and to give you a ‘bite’ photo.

The rest of today:

  • More packing/throwing out junk
  • Workout…?
  • Eat mah new food!
  • BAKE!?

It’s supposed to be in the 70s here this weekend–a welcomed change for sure! Have a great Labor Day weekend or just a great regular weekend :) .

I’ve been eating so many Medjool dates lately and loving it. I’ve also taken to adding them in my smoothies for a bit of sweetness. Your waffle mountain looks delicious!

Medjool dates are pure bliss. I savour them. Who needs chocolate when you have those?? Since they’re sooo pricey though we only get them once in a while.

And heck yes to waffles. I had been waffle deprived for a while but I had one for breakfast this morning and it was delightful.

I love the food you always show…stuff that I love too.
I’ve enjoyed all the “Peter’s Kitchen” posts too. Your dad is so cute.
I’m not a stalker, but I wish I lived near you (heck, I’m in Canada :) )….I’d join you and your fam for a tennis match and then invite myself to a few good meals and snax :)

Oh my my my!!!! I swear they have dates mismarked at Whole Foods!!! That medjool date looks amazing!! I think I always buy those deglet dates and they are DISgusting. I’ve made the “larabars” w/them and they never seemed to work quite right, and now I know why. Also, eating one by itself is DISgusting and I have wondered how so many people munch on them before working out or for snacks. Not sure why I’ve never looked into it more but thanks!

Ho mix!!! hahaha what is that?

Thank you for the date lesson — I’ve been eating medjools but I should look into the other varieties.

Wow who knew there were so many dates? I just put some dates in my homemade granola bars that are baking in the oven. YUM!
Haha I love the quote! :)

I need to stock up on veggie burgers, too. We currently have the Amy’s Bistro Burgers, which I’ve yet to try.

I buy the exact same dates! They are good, but nowhere near as big and juicy as medjool dates (I always splurge on two or three bulk bin medjools when I can afford to!). They have medjool dates at my Costco, and, while they are cheap for dates, they are sooo much more expensive than the deglet noor dates.

I love putting medjool dates in the freezer, they get even more chewy. They are better than candy :)

We have that movie to watch tonight. I haven’t heard anything too good about it but what the heck. It’s a Friday and homemade pizza with a movie sounds fabulous!

Sadly, I knew that you had gone to the Teet before I even read it–I stocked up on Amy’s burgers today too due to the BOGO sale:)

I finally restocked my waffle supply today too! It’s been a few weeks and I’m definitely craving waffle towers. I actually bought these Sweet Potato Pancakes too because I thought I remember seeing them on your blog before. I think you may have had frozen sweet potato waffles though? Anyways, I haven’t tried them yet but I’m pretty sure you said they were good.

Why was the move in date pushed back a week? And that barcode made me laugh. Ever look at water bottles? A lot of them say “HI, ME 5c”. Pretty wrong..but uhh, yeah.

I’ve been getting my dates from this large, mysterious chunk of squashed dates that my mom keeps in the fridge, so I have no idea what kind they are! I’m going to make sure to buy Medjool dates when I run out though!

Hahaha your poor dad! He must be a little creeped out now. ;)

That waffle mountain looks delicious! I have some waffles in the freezer but I find they fill me up fast but don’t keep me full for very long. Thus, I am waiting for my boyfriend to eat them. They are generic salt-loaded Eggo-like waffles that aren’t even good for me anyways.

I love your Chef Peter stories! Keep them coming. :) I’d love to see what else he comes up with. ^_^

Okay, your extensive research on dates has convinced me to FINALLY try them!!! My husband will probably give me weird looks, as he associates every dried fruit with prunes, but oh well, they look delicious!
