NYC Part II: Times Square Day and Night

I’ve been putting off this post for one reason and one reason only: I took WAY too many photos in New York City.

It’s true.

Something tells me you’re not the least bit surprised.

Whenever I go exploring, I always think about which photos I should post on the blog. Photos of food? Buildings? Landmarks? Cool stuff? Nature? Oh and um…last but not least…people? Well, I took photos of e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g and now I have to pick my favorites for the blog–not an easy task!

I woke up bright and early Monday morning to run around Central Park. Had I known my dad and I would walk from Central Park to Chinatown later that day (see map below), I wouldn’t have gone on a run at all. Good thing I only ran 3 miles.

It was a bit awkward at first running with all the ‘regulars’. I didn’t know the unspoken rules. Did I have to stop at the red lights in the park? Did I have to run in a counter clockwise direction? Was I supposed to stay on the right or the left side of the path?

Of course, 2 minutes into the run I felt right at home and instead of thinking about said rules, I enjoyed the beautiful sights of Central Park. The only down side was the scent of horse dung wafting throughout. I had to hold my breath quite a few times, which made running a little hard :) . I wonder if the ‘regulars’ ever get used to the smell.

The time and miles flew right by. 3 miles happened in a blink of an eye.

My dad and I basically explored Manhattan by foot. At times it felt like we were backpacking through Europe—walking ’til our legs ached and then stopping for food so we could walk some more…and then repeat.

On Monday, we started our journey at our hotel near Central Park and just. kept. going. and. going. We didn’t plan for it, it just sorta happened.

I’ll explain along the way. Let’s get this journey started…

Picture 12.png

The line above represents our path. Yep.

First, we walked through Times Square since my dad hadn’t been there in a few years (I had recently visited back in June).

IMG_9983.jpg IMG_9962.JPGIMG_9964.JPG

I desperately wanted to see Wicked (since I’ve only seen it twice before) but we didn’t get a chance to go. Next time!

IMG_9979.JPGIMG_9985.JPG

Jerry Springer was giving a talk right in the middle of Times Square.

See him? (He’s under the ‘BUCKS’ of the Starbucks sign)

IMG_9990.JPG

Now I’m gonna skip over the rest of the day and show you the photos I took of Times Square at night. We’ll backtrack in the next post.

Later that night, we went back to Times Square with my mom (she was in NYC for work so she was busy all day).

IMG_0084.JPG

I was hoping to quickly publish a blog post since there was free Wi-Fi in Times Square but I could NOT get it to work for some reason.

IMG_0080.JPG IMG_0094.JPG IMG_0112.JPG

After awhile I gave up and we continued on our way.

IMG_0086.JPG IMG_0087.JPG IMG_0093.JPG

Above Forever 21, there was a screen displaying a live shot of Times Square. You could look up and wave to yourself.

Let’s play where’s the LLE Fam? Can you find us?

IMG_0104.JPG

We’re in the bottom left hand corner, behind the first potted plant. Now do you see us?

IMG_0108.JPG

I’m such a tourist…

IMG_0114.JPG

…good thing you didn’t spot me running across intersections with my camera around my neck and a map in my hand :) .

NYC Part III coming right up. There will be food involved.

***

Tell me: If you could get a free ticket to any Broadway show, which would you choose?

Wicked. Duh.

I would choose Avenue Q. Yeah, again. It was TOO FUNNY.

Oh I am so envious – I love New York and would love to go back!

Broadway show – I’d probably say The Lion King. The music is just so amazing, and I’ve heard such great things about the show! And I’m a complete Disney nerd :)

One of the highlights of my nerdy theatre life was getting free front row tickets to ‘Wicked’ in Sydney this spring from a friend who works at the theatre. (my 5th time!)

That said, I’m dying to see ‘Promises Promises’ with Kristen Chenoweth right now!

I’d probably see West Side Story- my all time favorite musical, I’m so glad it’s back!!

I don’t run in CP that often, but when I do, I see more tourists than “regulars” so I think you’re good :)

Totally Wicked. Or American Idiot. Or Billy Elliot. Or any of them. I’m not going to be picky if it’s free ;)

I would want to have seen Spring Awakening with the original cast. The music from that is so beautiful I am pretty much a Lea Michele/Jonathan Groff fanatic. Wicked would be cool too, though. I saw it here in Chicago with Ana Gasteyer from SNL as Elphaba. The entire time I was thinking-it’s the mom from Mean Girls!! lol

. Glad you explored the city on foot! It’s always the best way to really see a city, especially nyc. I once walked from wall street to Columbia university on a whim. If I got free tickets to a broadway show, it would have been “race”, but because the original cast isn’t in it, it’ll have to be “la cage aux folles”.

It is always a little weird/awkward running in a new place! And city running and suburb running are very different :)

My 2 younger sisters have each seen Wicked 3 times each — once in MN, once in NY and once in London. Hmmm. I never got to go to London when I was in high school — I should have been in show choir like them and then I would have gotten a chance!

Allie I love your pictures — and who cares if you’re a total tourist in NYC — you aren’t the only one, I promise!

You saw Jerry Springer and John Stossel — I am sooooo jealous :)

Great photos Allie – what a fun trip. I bet you’re not the only one with a camera around your neck in New York :) Lion King would be my choice – if it’s still playing. Happy travels!

I think I’d have to choose Rent. When I was in the 8th grade, I was OBSESSED with the soundtrack. It was the first soundtrack I had ever (and really, one of the only ones I have every seen) had that was 2 disks long. I loved everything about it!

Haha! I’m a horse-back rider so I am totally used to the smell… but I always laugh when people who are unfamiliar with horses are around it and crinkle their noses in the air :P Glad you didn’t lose too much oxygen!

I think I’d want to see The Lion King. It looks so freaking incredible. I saw Mamma Mia a few years back and loved it. Then I watched the movie and almost cried…that was the worst play –> movie bit ever…oh my gosh. :/

You should come visit NYC (why not, with a $9 bus fare??) and visit ME and we can go to Wicked. :) I’ve heard Avenue Q is good, so I want to see that too!

I love running in Central Park…and no, you don’t have to stop for the red lights. :)
