A Civil War Hike + Egg Nog Coffee

My mom and I went on a beautiful hike today. Not only are there plenty of farms, vineyards, and shops here, there are regional parks with plenty of hiking trails too.

We ventured to not one, but two regional parks today along the Potomac River. We covered about 3 miles in total and worked up quite a sweat!

The second park we went to was the site of a Civil War Battle—the Battle of Balls Bluff. Read on!

Just across the Potomac River is Maryland! See?

Up first: Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Regional Park. This was someone’s property back in the 1800s.

This wasn’t the house, it was the ice box! I could use a freezer this big too :) .

I brought along my photographer-friendly gloves.

So many leaves everywhere. We came close to slipping and falling quite a few times.

It sure looked like scenes from Harry Potter 7 Part 1 were filmed here :) .

We climbed this huge mountain that I’m pretty sure was not the path. It might look flat in the photo but it was pretty much a vertical slope. Mum was NOT thrilled!

The water was so calming.

The second park we went to was Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park, where the Civil War Battle took place.

IMG_4004.jpg

We tried sticking to one trail but we ended up walking on almost every trail since they all criss-crossed.

My hike was fueled by plenty of Thanksgiving leftovers and Egg Nog Coffee.

IMG_3949.jpg

My brother brought over Organic Egg Nog for Thanksgiving Dinner and I’ve been adding a little bit to everything i.e. my Sweet Potato Egg Nog Smoothie and Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride Tea.

I poured about 2 TBSP egg nog and 2 TBSP almond milk to my coffee as well as a sprinkle of cinnamon.

And a dollop of whipped cream for good measure.

More food to come tomorrow. We’re still working on finishing the Thanksgiving leftovers!

Tell me: Are you outdoorsy or indoorsy? Would you rather hike in the wilderness or at the mall? :)

Hiking on Thanksgiving weekend is such a great idea :-) I am definitely an outdoorsy person. I like to shop occasionally but if I stay in a store too long or if it gets too crowded I start to get claustrophobic!! Outdoor activities are definitely the way to go for me.

I am not an outdoors girl – at all. I try, but fail miserably every time!

Mmmm… now I want me some eggnog! I am an outdoorsy girl… but only when the weather is nice. When rain or snow come around I turn into Oscar the Grouch!

I’m an outdoorsy person as long as it’s not too much below freezing. Once the wind starts blowing, it gets a little tough, but if I’m dressed in multiple layers, it helps a lot! Looks like a nice day!

That place really does look like HP could have been filmed there! We just got home from seeing it, actually. Love those gloves, too! I always had to wear gloves like that when I was in band..fabric-covered fingers can’t cover clarinet holes very well. :P

Hmm…this place looks familiar. I wonder if it’s the same place my cross-country team used to run.
I prefer the wilderness! I hate the mall; it makes my head hurt with the loud music.

Hmm…I haven’t had eggnog is so long. Maybe I need to remedy this! Or make my own?! No, that’s probably too crazy ;)

I’d say I’m a little of both. I love the outdoors and hate not taking advantage of a great day and feeling the grass in between my toes…but bugs really, really bother me.

That looks so much like the Brandywine Battlefield near my house…I feel like all the historic battles took place in the middle of the wilderness haha. I’m indoorsy when it’s cold, but outdoorsy when it’s nice out!!

In that first picture it looks like you’re right over the water! I would be scared of falling in! :P

As much as I love shopping, there’s nothing like a gorgeous hike outdoors!

Outdoors all the way! I’m lucky to live in a place with so much to do outside – hiking, snowboarding, swimming, running, and tons more.

Heh, those Anthropologie mugs (or at least that’s where I got mine) are all over the blog world. They are just special, I guess. I need to get my hands on some eggnog, STAT! I hate when I forget and all of a sudden it’s April, no ‘nog then.

Yum– can I come over for an egg nog latte and smoothie? :)
I made a SUPER yummy sweet potato- coconut puree with coconut milk, sweet potato and cinnamon– and a dollop of cashew butter, of course :)
