2011 is off to a great start thanks to a 5 mile run! It was totally unplanned but just what I needed to go from feeling lethargic and blah to feelin’ good about life.
The run was surprisingly easy. Last Wednesday, after my difficult 4 miler, I thought my endurance was officially down the drain. I guess my body just needed a test run to remember what it felt like to run after 3 weeks off. It helped that it was a whopping 54*F today. 10 degrees really makes a BIG difference.
While running, I got lost in my thoughts about what I wanted to accomplish in 2011, including a potentially big decision I’ll have to make that may take me anywhere from 500 to 12,000 miles away. Mmm hmm!

***
Before coming back home and going for my run, I strolled around Arlington with my brother and had a good chit chat. We hit up the Farmer’s Market, Williams Sonoma and a few bakeries (the only places open!).

Challah (!!) and ‘mongous cookies

We stopped in at a new bakery in town called Crumbs Bake Shop. I got a coffee and a little mini red velvet cupcake for free!

Backtrack to last night.
We went out to eat at Sushi Rock, a sushi restaurant/bar with a hard rock theme. The menu was a fun read, filled with a lot of creative dishes and drinks.

The food was decent and the portion sizes were bigger than we expected, always a plus.

To start, I ordered a cocktail called I. Wanna. Rock.
Raspberry vodka + Rose champagne + rock candy
I hadn’t eaten rock candy in forever…so good!

I ordered the Sticky Fingers specialty roll with brown rice.

The lighting was incredibly dark so photos were nearly impossible to take. The candlelight helped me out a bit.
Brother: [sitting patiently looking across the table at me]
Me: [picks up chopsticks ready to dig in!]
Brother: You’re not going to take a photo of my dish?
Me: Nah, it’s waaaay too dark in here. Not worth it.
Brother: Ohh [looks sad and thoroughly bummed out]
My brother loves getting his food photographed and featured on the blog
. Next time, Brother Bear! We’ll bring a flashlight (kidding!).

We finished the night back on the couch in our jammies watching Sixteen Candles, a movie none of us had ever seen!!

I thought it was okay. I mean, I burst out laughing about 80 times but I must say it was super corn dog, super awkward and super crazy! It was not what I was expecting at all. Definitely a play-in-the-background-while-doing-other-stuff kinda movie, in my opinion.
I can’t believe the movie is only 26 years old, yet everything about it felt soooo ancient. I mean, floppy disks!?!?! Do you remember those things?

We switched over to the ball drop right in the nick of time. We had to live stream the countdown since my brother doesn’t have cable. I thought we were surely gonna miss it since as of 11:59 pm the website was still loading. But 10 seconds before the New Year, it started rolling.
Happy New Year!!

Tell me:
1. One of your New Year’s resolutions/goals if you’re making any.
Mine are swirling around in my head. I probably won’t make any real resolutions but I’m definitely setting some goals. To be blogged soon!
2. Favorite oldies movie.
3. Do anything fun yesterday?

12,000 miles away?! Wow! I’m so curious!
Yep, that’s alot of miles away from home…when will you do the big reveal?
That bakery with all the cupcakes in the display case makes me really hungry for something sweet right now!
CHEERS to you and a prosperous 2011~!~!
Yay for big decisions (& boo for cliffhangers!;)) and I’m quite jealous of your sushi new year’s– LOVE sushi!
I had sushi last night too! My fave dinner, to end 2010!
The place you went looks great — the food and the drink!
Glad you had a good NYE! Still thinking about my goals and resolutions too!
Whereee are you going?! I don’t want to open a bakery in Australia. Although, the beach would be nice….
I’m curious too about this big decision…hope you post soon about it!
Wow a free mini cupcake! Lucky girl!
1. Practise yoga daily. That should be interesting…!
2. Oh too many! Maybe ‘Some Like It Hot’…love it!
3. Family party!
I want the rock candy drink! Looks amazing-we had rock candy in our drinks for our engagement party,so fun!
way to rock that run!
Amy–
Haha when I actually decide what I want to do! Probably won’t happen for the next few months. Gotta plan it all out first.
I LOVE Sixteen Candles! Makes me smile every time!
So was the rock candy just on the side to eat, or were you supposed to swirl it in the drink to make it sweeter? Either way, it’s neat!
Mmm, that sushi roll looks perfect – and like something I would order – I LOVE eel.
HAPPY NEW YEAR !!
Oooooh I’m so excited to see what your big adventure might be!!!
I watched Sleepless In Seattle at midnight and I thought it was pretty corny too, but I liked it! It was only 10 years old (or so) and I felt like it was older! I mean, what up with the baggy shirts, faded jeans and poofy hair?!
Food looked as amazing as always!
It’s funny – yesterday, by 11pm, I saw a movie called “16 Wishes” on the TV.
What’s “16 Candles” about?
Happy New Year, Allie!
xoxo
Can’t wait to hear about your big decision! I say go away for a while if it’s somewhere you’ve wanted to go and/or something you’ve wanted to do…my best experiences in life have been new adventures like that!
Crumbs is taking over the world!
What did you think of the cupcake?
I used to love them, but now I think they are just meteokre. The frosting is way better than the cake.
Anxious to hear about your big decision!
I think all the John Hughes movies are awkward! I cringed half the time watching Pretty in Pink.
That seriously sounds like a perfect new year’s to me. I want an IV with that cocktail…it sounds so amazing. And Sixteen Candles is amazing!! I feel like it’s super ancient but not that old at the same time. I mean, 26 years? Crazy that when I first saw it it was probably only 15!! My favorite old school movie is Say Anything. John Cusak and his boom box own my heart
Good workouts always make for an amazing day and it’s great that it was so easy for you! Glad your year’s off to a great start!
Ive been to a Crumbs before. That place is like heaven to me considering I can have an aggresive sweet tooth. Those cupcakes look amazing.
No real resolutions as of yet but I am with you on the goals part!!! My favorite old movie of all time up to the age of 17 or 18 was “the blue lagoon”. I dont think I have a favorite anymore though
My siblings are the same way with my taking pics of their food- too cute!
I spent my new years at church where we feasted and had new years’ service and then came home just in time to watch the ball drop!
Mmm, sushiii. Bad lighting or not, sushi is always good in my book
Ah man, Sixteen Candles was a favorite of mine back in 6th grade. I don’t even wanna think about how many times I said “Hey sexy girlfriend!” I watched the movie again recently though, and I agree–it’s super corny!
12,000 miles from the US? Are you thinking about moving to London?
(Can I suggest 9000 miles or so instead, and recommend New Zealand?)
Favourite old movie – old-ISH movie, definitely Dirty Dancing. OldER movie, Singin’ in the Rain. Or How To Steal a Million. I can’t choose between them!
Totally agree on the Sixteen Candles opinion!!! I have to say I love the real oldies movies like An Affair to Remember and Roman Holiday. I can’t remember the last time I had rock candy. Super jealous of that cocktail now. Happy New Year
I can’t wait to hear about this big decision you have to make!!!
That drink sounds SO flippin good!!! I am not 21 yet but i want to try something fancy like that when I am of age!!! LOVE sushi too!!
One of my resolutions is to gain enough followers on my blog to justify monetizing. Here’s to a successful 2011!
Not only do I remember floppy discs…but I remember the giant 5 1/4 in. floppy discs from elementary school. I also remember not having a computer at home until I was 12 and no internet at home until I was 15. No DSL at home until college.
I also remember that no one had cell phones when I was in high school and I was always searching for pay phones to call home as a teenager.
Sometimes I think I feel more in tune with the 80s and 90s than I feel in tune with now.
That is too funny about your brother… my mom is that way too! Tonight we went out to eat and she gave me this look when I put away my camera and said, “My food is pretty too, don’t you think?” Haha! Your Crumbs cupcake looks amaaazing. Happy new year!!
1. One goal of mine is to eat dinner with my parents more often.
2. Now & Then is one of my fav. old movies. Need to watch it again soon!
3. Yesterday I tailgated and watched a bowl game! Beers at 11 am? Yes please!
I went to a Crumbs in NYC last spring, yum! My goal for this year is to run a half marathon – nervous and excited!
Everytime I walk by Crumbs I have to go in just to look at the amazing cupcakes
I love all the old movies with Meg Ryan!
That sushi place sounds so fun!!! I’ve been craving sushi for a while now….I think its time I go get some
Happy New Year!!
I’m sorry… did you say that Sixteen Candles was just OK?! I am thoroughly disappointed in you. That is a classic! I have childhood fantasies of Jake waiting for me outside of a church, that have crossed over into adulthood fantasies. Please tell me you have seen The Breakfast Club?
”[looks sad and thoroughly bummed out]”
Aww! You should have taken it just to make him excited, lol. ;p
Happy New Year!
I’ve wanted to see sixteen candles for a long time!
As Good As It Gets is good one I really like, the grumpy old man is entertaining to me for some reason.
Sixteen Candles is one of my favs! such a good one! I’ve heard so much about Crumbs and now that I have seen their cupcakes- i can understand!
Yay for the run!

Graduate is my top goal…followed by summer camp in the USA, cook more recipes/be more adventerous and run a fast 5k
Old movie wise – Old Arnold Schwarzenegger films! Love him
Last night, I went to a new vegetarian restaurant for my aunt’s birthday – it was ace! Parnisp, chestnut and cranberry terrine….bliss.
Favourite oldies movie? The Wedding Singer! It gets me every time.
Sometimes I find running easier after I’ve taken time off and had a few tough runs… I think it’s just a natural thing that the body does to bounce back
I have been reading your blog everyday since summer and this is my first comment. First of all can I just say I love your blog? And congraturations for your big decisions!
I have my last semester left to graduate and am pretty worried about the decisions that I will have to make. Hopefully I will figure things out and make my big decisions like you did! Until then I need to stay positive and not feel lost in my life.
My dad and [step]mom took my twin and I to the Plano Japan House for Christmas, and I ate until I was stuffed to the gills! haha They had a ton of sushi, salads, hot foods, and a dessert bar complete with a chocolate fountain, so I wanted to get as much as I could.
Your cupcake looks delicious and cute. I LOVE Sixteen Candles and Pretty and Pink. I think Molly Ringwald was a really cute actress. They are corny but somehow entertaining to me. =) Have an awesome Sunday!
What’s 500 to 12,000 miles away? We are dying to hear!!!
I’m not one to make news years resolutions, but I always have general goals in life that I want to reach…so i posted my ‘life to-do’ list. Check it out for some motivation! anotherhealthyhabit.com
xoxo
That little red velvet cupcake looks yummy! Sounds like you had a fun night. Definitely a unique spot. Your drink is so much fun.
1. One of your New Year’s resolutions/goals if you’re making any. Spend more time with family & friends (can’t wait to hear about yours)
2. Favorite oldies movie. hmmmmmm dazed and confused?
3. Do anything fun yesterday? On New Years eve, we hung in with friends, yesterday was a busy day- little of this, little of that
Happy new year and congrats on your great run!
My big goal for this year is to heal from my recent back surgery and return to cardio/weights slowly and surely.
I love 16 Candles! Sure it’s corny but it’s a classic. I also love Pretty in Pink.
Ahh those are some crazy far distances! I’m excited to hear about this potential decision!
I thought Sixteen Candles was kind of a let down too. My favourite old movies are The Breakfast Club and any old Meg Ryan movie!
“When Harry Met Sally” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” are two of my favorite old (oldish in the first one’s case) movies. I think I’ve seen both of them at least 10 times… Like you I graduated last spring, and am still trying to figure out what I want to do – I have to keep reminding myself how fortunate I am to have so many options!!! Decisions, decisions. 2011 is going to be an AMAZING year!
You’re too cute! Love this post! When I go out with anyone now, they always remind me to take pictures of my food! haha! I love when family and friends are supportive like that!
1. Watch less TV and read more books.
2. I’m going OLD SCHOOL… I LOVE Sound of Music! hehe I’m a nerd
3. I went to date night with my hubby! Fun!
Oh goodness. I wanna. Rock!
THat sounds delicious!!
and I am with ya, its sooo hard to run when its freezing outside. I hate that feeling!
I saw 16 candles when I was really little! Clearly I must see again! lol
Crumbs is from NY, I’m so happy to hear they have one in DC! I’m moving there in a few months.
One goal I have for the 2011 is to finish my first half marathon in March!
favorite old movie: Sixteen Candles or Breakfast Club
Crumbs is SOOO good!! Congrats on the 5 mile run
I need to get back into running!! I live not to far from you but I haven’t been feeling the cold weather lately. I should get out there this week.
