Sizzle Sizzle

in Breakfast, Dining Out, Dinner

Today was all about running errands and getting my chompers cleaned. If there’s anywhere I dread going more than the doctor’s office, it’s the dentist’s office. Growing up, I didn’t mind going to the dentist. It wasn’t until I started getting cavities left and right, that I dreaded going (it doesn’t help that those painful novocaine shots never actually numb the right places in my mouth!).

IMG_7755.jpg

Anyways, funny story. The [new] dentist took one look at my teeth and said “Wow, your teeth look really good. Do you floss everyday?”

HAAAAA! I nearly choked on the spit sucker. So you’re telling me all those chocolate chips I ate last month didn’t kill my teeth?

I made a face and said “uhh.”

Dentist: “On and off?” Me: Off.

However, I did floss 4x this week. I learned (from a blogger but forgot who!) that flossing everyday for a week leading up to your appointment makes a big difference. I tried it out this time and I guess it worked, even though I missed a few days!

Screen shot 2011-01-08 at 8.35.29 PM.png

I know I really should make it a habit to floss everyday. I heard on the news that flossing could add 6 years to your life and can prevent diseases such as cardiovascular disease.

REALLY?! 6 years?! I think taking the time to floss takes up 6 years of your life too though.

…kidding.

***

Before we left, I had a slice of Loaf #3: Whole Grain Spelt Flour and Oat

IMG_6592.jpg

Plus 8 oz. 2% Greek yogurt with cooked oatmeal stirred in and 1/2 banana.

IMG_6686.jpg

We stopped by Costco and I didn’t have a single sample (!!!), since I had brushed my teeth for the dentist. That’s a lie, I had a bite of Chobani yogurt. Okay, I just had to take that sample. I made sure not to chew it though.

I waited ’til after my appointment to bite into this orange. I didn’t want orange strings hanging out of my teeth. A dentist’s dream come true, I’m sure.

IMG_6691.JPG

For dinner, we went back to Mirchi Indian Cuisine. This was our 3rd time in a matter of months ONLY because my mom bought 4 Wow.com coupons that expire in a couple weeks. To be honest, it left me unsatisfied again. They never have the dish I want to try (baingan bartha) and it’s hard to enjoy food that is so spicy it makes you numb from the neck up.

That’s just me though. My parents like it. They also liked this beer.

IMG_6697.JPG

Dinner is usually when I eat my veggies, so when we go to Mirchi, I end up with no veggies and a belly full of naan (and water to wash away the spiciness). Naan is delicious but I need more than that for dinner!

IMG_6704.JPG

I ordered Vegetable Manchuria

IMG_6693.JPG

It was good but I had to give up on it after just 2 balls….because they were more like firey balls of death!!!

IMG_6699.JPG

Sizzle Sizzle

My dad ordered Lamb Fry and my mom ordered Shrimp Masala, another super spicy dish.

IMG_6702.JPG IMG_6700.JPG

I tried them both as well and then they seared my tongue to a crisp. I soothed it with 2 pieces of naan. I also chugged all 3 glasses of water at our table. <– bellyache!

IMG_6705.JPG

I came home and filled up on a banana, almond butter and plenty of chocolate chips. That’s more like it!

By The Way…

Putting all 3 of my favorite Glee songs on one page was the best idea I’ve ever had, especially for dance parties in my kitchen.

I am still waiting on 2 winners of the Stevia Give-ia-way to come forward. If I don’t hear from them by Sunday night, I will pick 2 more comments. That means, you still have time to enter!

Tell me: Are you a daily flosser or a cheater like me? Do you like spicy food?

I can tolerate some spiciness but super sizzling hot food is hard for me to enjoy.

Ugh. I don’t floss very often… last time I went to my dentist he suggested if I don’t make it a habit to floss, the LEAST I can do is use a sonicare toothbrush so that’s what I do and my teeth do seem much cleaner!

I love super spicy food. With that said, I have had spicy food that is WAY TOOOO SPICY as in I’m chugging milk and drooling (pretty picture).

I pretty much never floss either! I’m horrible :)

I don’t floss daily, but I use those little flossing things with the handle to make it easier for myself!

I do NOT like spicy food either! I like medium salsa, but that’s about as much as I can handle!

Floss baby, floss!

It really does so much good….my hubs neglected flossing for many yrs and had bad gum disease which he has kinda reversed but it’s not perfect…flossing would have prevented it, 100%. As well as paid and thousands of dollars of dental work.

Enjoy your nite :)

I am an “on and off” flosser who LOVES the dentist. I do the same trick — extra brushing and flossing in the week or so leading up to an appointment. It builds up my gum strength so they don’t bleed — the tell-tail sign of a non-flosser.

As much as I love the dentist, though, he probably doesn’t love me because I make no effort to brush my teeth right before I go (aka I totally would have had those costco samples).
My reasoning is this: I am paying this man to clean my teeth– he can deal with a little lunch still stuck in there!

I’m the worst with flossing. I know that you’re supposed to do it daily but it feels like such an inconvenience.

Recently, I’ve become much better at floss. I’m still not at every day but flossing certainly makes me teeth happy!

9 Maryann January 8, 2011 at 11:46 pm

I started flossing every night for a while but am usually so tired right before I go to bed that lately i’ve gotten lazy.

Spicy food is not for me! I’m such a wimp…and it totally makes me sweat. Not enjoyable :)

I also do the floss the week before trick. Works every time!

I floss a few times a week and obviously, it’s not enough because I have a cavity every time I go to the dentist!

I’ll have to keep that flossing tip in mind for my next trip to the dentist, haha.
I’m such a big wimp when it comes to spicy food, so I know exactly what you went through. Usually I share Indian food at restaurants with friends and they do like spicy so I try to tough it out!

Reply

13 Heather January 9, 2011 at 12:24 am

Oh my gosh, I am such a sissy when it comes to spicy food. I have only had Indian food once and I made it myself. I would love to go to an Indian restaurant, but I fear the trip would only lead to some serious heartburn/indigestion. Maybe I’ll just keep experimenting in my own kitch!

I did the whole floss the week before thing once and it totally worked…the last time, not so much! I found out I had 5 cavities! Holy crap! So, now I floss EVERY day…sometimes twice!

I am terrible about flossing. :P But I do use a WaterPik. I think that’s the same idea, but you don’t use floss. It’s easier for braces.

OMG I have NEVER heard those words utter out of a dentist’s mouth! I don’t know what it is ( I floss at least 3x/wk) but every time I go to the dentist they tell me I have at least a few cavities! I jsut went the other day and I can’t even tell you how many I had….ughh

I can’t believe you don’t floss regularly! I’m OCD about my teeth…I actually wore my gums down from brushing too hard and have had gum grafting surgery twice, with skin from the roof of my mouth sewn on the thin parts of my gum.

I generally dislike spiciness, it just ends up hurting my mouth and lips and upsetting my stomach later. I’m a wimp I guess.

Also I floss almost everyday. You need to get those floss picks (we love the Oral-B + Scope ones) and it is 103930202x better. Before with normal floss I did it like once a month, tops. Now with the floss picks I do it like 6 outta 7 days.

Urgh I HATE the dentist! Much worse than the doctor’s for me! At least the doctor’s is rarely painful! But I really SHOULD floss more…

I floss every night, and I really dislike when food is as hot as you described. It makes me nauseous. :(

I haven’t always been a flosser by nature, but over the years (and through many cavities,) I finally developed the habit. I even added in mouthwash every night, just as an extra step against having to get those nasty fillings. ;)

I floss every day, sometimes twice. And I love the feeling of flossing when my teeth are really dirty….I’m so weird, I know.

LOVE spicy food…I put so much wasabi in my soy sauce last night that my nose was full-on running and I had to ask the waiter for more paper napkins as tissues. Super cute.

Hi Sweetie! Yes….flossing daily and a fluoride mouthrinse between brushing is a great way to go. If you hate flossing, try the little interdental brushes. They’re great and will save you time . x

jealous of your good appointment! my hygienist always scolds me for crappy flossing (i’m sporadic) and my dentist says i have ‘deep grooves’ and always seems to think a cavity is on its way.

i do kind of like the taste of the flouride foam sealant stuff though. brings me back to my childhood! i know, i’m weird.

I didn’t used to be, but I didn’t go to the dentist for a couple of years (insurance issues, fear issues) and when I finally went, I had to get a root canal and two cavities filled. It was a nightmare. Now I floss about 5 times a week with those floss sticks. They are so much easier to use than the string for me. I carry some in my purse just in case lol.

Glad to hear you didn’t have any cavities!

I floss every so often… sometimes my teeth just feel really gross and I feel like I have too and I am also guilty of flossing like the week before I go to the dentist :P I can’t handle any amount of spiciness in my food! I hardly ever eat spicy food so I guess thats why but even just a little bit and I can’t eat too much of it!

oh thanks for the dental tips girlfriend! According to my dentist (who is also my uncle! Yeah, he’s always monitoring my sweets intake at family parties) I’ve been on the “verge of gingivities” since I was 12. I just hate flossing :(

no sampz at costco? you have some serious will power, my dear!

TIP – put the floss in the shower, and floss while your in there. If you’re like me, I take my time with showers and dont rush (most of the time) That way is it a daily reminder and takes only a short amount of time. Try it and see if you like that idea…. Trust me, I am “THAT” person in the dentist office you hate.. ;) but I will make your chompers nice and clean!

I don’t know anyone that flosses twice a day…why do they even ask? Just to make us lie and feel bad about it? The only way I will floss is with those little floss tooth pick things. They are so bad for the environment though I hardly ever buy them.

Definitely say floss daily if you can! A few years ago, they told me that they were watching TWELVE of my teeth because they were in danger of turning into cavities! Since then, I’ve made it a habit to floss every night and accidentally forgot to go to the dentist for over 2 years (oops?). When I finally went last month, I was relieved to find out that I was still cavity-free and that my teeth were in great shape! I thank my electric toothbrush (because it has a 2 minute timer!!!) and daily flossing. :)

Being a future dentist (sigh, good old 3.5 years to go), I definitely floss every single day. It is THE #1 thing to do if you get cavities, becuase the little bugs hiding between your teeth are one of the MAIN causes of cavities!!! It’s also great to prevent periodontal disease (gum disease) – you can get it even if you dont have cavities. Whack huh? If you dont want teeth fallin’ out of your mouth, floss my dear, floss!! :)

Also, those shots shouldn’t numb the wrong part of your mouth!!! Good thing you have a new dentist girl….

Totally a cheater :) when I had braces I was supposed to wear elastic bands to help align my teeth every day, but I’d put 4 elastics on each side of my mouth the night before my appointment and my orthodontist couldn’t tell the difference! (My mouth definitely hurt after the intense elastic pulling though!)

Oh, you gotta floss! For reals, it can save your life (plus, it says to on the Lululemon bag, so you KNOW it’s important!;)). Flossing is a HUGE way to reduce your likelihood of heart disease: http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/features/periodontal-disease-heart-health

Don’t wait: Floss every day. If you’re bored, think of 3 things to be grateful for while you do it. Good for your body and spirit!
