Sick Shoes

I’m getting sick! I can feel it coming. I have a sore throat, my head hurts and I feel weak. I’m not surprised at all considering I just spent 14 days in constant contact with foreign germs. It was impossible to avoid touching the subway handlebars, door knobs and other common surfaces.

I think sitting on an airplane with hundreds of people and traveling without sleep really sealed the deal.

I didn’t start to feel sick until I was on my way to the gym this morning. I went ahead and worked out anyways to see if I would feel better. I was hoping for a great workout given all my time off but alas it was a torturous 45 min. on the elliptical. No energy for strength training. Boo germs.

Post workout, I had lunch in 2 parts.

Part 1: Egg Veggie Wrap

Whole wheat wrap with avocado, spring mix and a sunny side up egg

An inside look…

Part 2: Greek yogurt with microwaved pears

IMG_9757_1.JPG

Along with Spring Mix, I always get a tub of Fage Greek yogurt from Costco. Another reason I could never permanently live in Hong Kong…I only saw Greek yogurt once and it was so soooo outrageously expensive.

Then I went to Potomac River Running Store to buy a new pair of running shoes with my Groupon. My current shoes are at the end of their running life and it’s about time for them to retire and become elliptical shoes. I was beginning to feel some pain back in the fall when I was running regularly in them. Since I am very prone to injury, I do NOT play around with old shoes!

IMG_7816.jpg

I got my gait analyzed while running on the treadmill. The guy told me I only slightly overpronate so a stability shoe would be best for me. I tried on about 6 different brands of stability shoes, although 4 out of those 6 brands didn’t stand a chance! I am a loyal Asics fan.

IMG_7818.jpg

I ended up buying a pair even though I wasn’t 100% sure because it was just too awkward not to (since the guy spent a good 15 min. with me) and the Groupon expires on Tuesday.

IMG_7817.jpg

I got the Asics GT-2160. Including the cost of the Groupon, the shoes came out to be $75 total.

Because I can’t sleep without knowing I got the best deal in all of the land…I came home and went online to see if I could find the same shoe or another shoe for cheaper. Older models always go one sale when they’re newer replacements are released.

I didn’t find a better deal on the same shoes but I did find the Gel-Kayano 16 (a stability shoe that I’ve worn before and loved) on sale for just a little more…in purple, my favorite running shoe color!

I think I’m still going to keep the ones I bought since I have to use the Groupon on something anyways (grrr I knew this would happen!).

Perhaps I’ll get the Gel-Kayanos online too since they’re a good price and I eventually have to buy new shoes at some point. OR maybe not since I’m broke!

***

I took another 2 hour nap earlier tonight despite trying my hardest not to. I hate napping but I guess my body needs rest to fight off this sickness. I woke up JUST in time to catch the Duke Basketball game and eat dinner.

Tell me: Are you loyal to a certain brand of sneakers?

So sorry you’re feeling sick! That is no fun at all. I am not surprised though – foreign germs can do a number on you!

I wore Nike Pegasus’s for a longgg time, but I just bought Saucony Kinvaras! I love them so far, especially since they’re an awesome green color.

I’m completely loyal to Mizuno Wave Riders. I think I got near 3000 miles out of 2 pairs.

The Asics 2100 series is my favorite shoe! I’ve been wearing them for years. You’ll love ‘em. I’m surprised you didn’t get the ’60s in purple though…

I went to Marshall which is right near that shopping center! I am now at school in MA but my family still lives in Vienna. So fun/weird to see a picture of that shopping center on your blog! Do you ever go to Jason’s deli, across the street? It had recently opened when I was in hs, and my friends and I loved it!

It’s definitely worth checking out next time your in the area. Lots of veggie options, very fresh, inexpensive, and the best part…free soft serve with every meal! Also, I love that your from nova but went out of state for school. With the great prices+great rep of va school most of my hs friends went instate. Still it’s always fun to see someone else who went out of state!

Sorry you’re feeling under the weather. That’s always the worst part about going on a trip….the after flight cold. :(

Not surprisingly, for daily shoes, I am all about my Chucks. ;)

I did get my first pair of running shoes several months ago…they’re Brooks and I love them, so I could see some brand loyalty growing out of this good experience. Also, for work out clothes, I’m a Nike loyalist. Just sayin’.

I used to always buy New Balance because they were cheap, but my husband encouraged me to try some better brands recently so I bought a pair of Brooks and I love them!

Feel better soon! :)

Feel better soon!

I am not partial to any specific brands. I’m not a runner so for me, the price is what is most important.

I’m loyal to any brand of sneakers that is cheap!! And on sale = good bargain! So I suppose you can say I’m more loyal to my cheap Asian roots. ;)

I hope you feel better, Allie! Airplanes seriously dehydrate a person. Drink more fluids, and enjoy the good weather! :-)

I always get sick when I travel so I’ve developed a habit of drinking a pack of Emegen C everyday during the time I travel. It helps tremendously. Even if I do get sick, I don’t feel like I am out of energy and am still able to go out and enjoy my trip.

Hope you get better soon. Think of it as just as building up your immune system.

I’m an Asics fan too! I run in Gel 1150s – there’s a discount sportswear chain here called Sports Direct and they have fantastic deals on Asics shoes. A couple of years ago I decided to treat myself to a ‘proper’, expensive pair of trainers – I spent £95 on a pair of Saucony shoes and ended up damaging the ligaments in my foot. Great! Once I could run again, I went straight back to my Asics and I haven’t had any injuries since. I don’t even get blisters after a half-marathon!

I’m loyal to my Brooks Adrenalines. I don’t even know how many pairs I’ve had, but I love them!

I can’t stand having a lot of fabric and bulk on my feet when I run-I’ve had this pair of new balances for like 3 years now! I run in them, play soccer in them, somehow they manage to stay alive. I find they are good for flat-feeted people like me :)
That wrap looks really yummy…hope you start feeling better!

I love groupon although I notice I always end up buying things just because I have it!

I know, all my Groupons are expiring and it has actually become very STRESSFUL!!!!! I will definitely think twice before buying another one just because I can never use them up fast enough.

I’ve been out of running for a while, but when I do, I like the Saucony Hurricane series. I like Asics as my cross-training shoe though. Glad you’re starting to feel better…

I overpronate too and wear the Asics GT 2150’s. I like em for the most part. They kind of rub me in certain places when I run long distances though, so I’ve learned to tape with sports tape to protect those areas from blisters. Otherwise they’re great though. Got me through my first marathon last month! :)
