Walkin’ on Eggshells

Last night I was lying in bed paralyzed with lower back pain, while some kids (yes, kids) down the hall were blasting music so loud the walls were sh-sh-sh-shaking. You didn’t hear? I celebrated my 88th birthday yesterday. I must have forgotten to tell you.

After removing her dentures and inserting her earplugs, Granny Allie drifted off to sleep, dreaming of quieter days…

Needless to say, the apartment gym was empty this morning! I caught up on Casey Anthony news (still obsessed) while treadmilling (run+walk) for 25 min., ellipticalling for 15 min. and doing leg exercises with 2-15 lb. dumbbells for another 5 min.

Post workout, I loaded up on veggies. I’m working the afternoon closing shift at the bakery again today so I’m saving the carb fest for later.

Another penny pincher salad consisting of romaine lettuce, mini peppers, avocado and hard-boiled eggs.

Well, 3 poorly peeled hard-boiled eggs that is. Those egg shells were stubborn!

IMG_7170.jpg

I also enjoyed 2 small slices of Cheddar Garlic.

For dessert, I drank a cup of kefir with frozen blueberries.

Looks like somebody needs to whip out the ironing board!

Actually, granny duties will have to wait because it’s time for WORK. Have a great weekend, y’all!

Tell me: Got any fun weekend plans?

That salad looks bomb to me! Eggs and avocado is one of my top combos ever! Drippy yolk and creamy avocado come together in pure bliss!

I went to bed by 9: 30 every night last week. Can I be your old lady friend?!

Haha – I’m the same way when I notice wrinkles in my pictures. I even iron my placemats!

Also that happens to me ALL the time with hard boiled egg shells! Sometimes I end up losing more of the egg than I actually get to eat!

That said, this post really makes me want a hard boiled egg now!

What a yummy looking salad! I should think to make hard boiled eggs more often for my salads… I tend to get a bit hungry an hour or two after my salad for lunch, but maybe if I added an egg or two, that would tide me over longer. :) Have a great weekend!!

I’ve heard that if you add salt to the boiling water when making HB eggs that the shells peel easier — and if the eggs are room temperature before boiling. No idea if that is true because I always forget to do either when I make HB eggs.

Oh my god I know exactly what you mean with the lower back pain. I just turned 21, and I have 2 slipped/herniated discs and some other fused bone issue in my back and it’s so frustrating! I feel so old!

Ugh that whole Casey Anthony thing. Grrr. My hard boiled eggs always look like that. I have no patience so I pretty much tear mine apart haha.

Oh Granny Allie! That is awesome, I would totally be in the same boat…. I felt the same way in college while I was trying to study. Some nights I was like seriously, do you EVER go to class?!?!?
Ina Garten suggests rolling the eggs on the counter, so that the shell cracks into teeny tiny pieces and then it just peels off with the inside skin thing…. It sounds weird and you think your going to smash the egg an make an ever bigger mess, but it works! It works even better if you smash/roll then peel the shell off under cold water!

“saving” my carbs is the best thing ever — it makes me feel like I have a free ticket to dessert!

Grandma I am the same way but I do have some real years on ya!

Because we are getting ready to move and I don’t want to waste or take a bunch of food with us I have been eating a lot of what I call the poor man’s salad! I love them though!

Randomly, my fun weekend plans include going to the Wine Kitchen in Leesburg (from your recommendation). I made my boyfriend promise to take me there when I quit my job — and I’m quitting today! (Don’t worry, I have a new and much better one — just got the offer today!)

Thanks! Love your blog. I’ve been reading through some of the archives the last couple weeks (the job I just quit leaves lots of time to read!) I am enjoying them very much. :)

Hope you’re having fun in Cville!

Haha, I’ve been feeling like a granny lately, too! I’m planning on parkin’ my caboose on the couch since it’s raining and eating some fab carbs…virtual high-five?

Do you like your yolks soft? They are so good that way!

Haha I live on a granny schedule too! Bed by 10:30, and awake by 6:30… I love it. :D

Your hard boiled eggs look like they are cooked perfectly! I always overcook mine until the yoke is super pale and hard. What’s your technique??

heheh I’m a total granny too- no shame ;) Lunch looks yummy. I hate when hard boiled eggs won’t peel nicely. Luckily, it doesn’t impact how delicious they are ;) . Weekend plans=baseball game tomorrow night and brunch with the rents Sunday. Also hitting up the gym and farmers market!

Fellow granny here! I live on the ground floor of my apartment building, so I hear EVERYONE who comes through the hall on Thirsty Thursdays. I curse them from my bed and crank up the heating pad for my aching joints ;)

I love how confident and healthy you are! I was wondering how you still manage to have a positive body image in this messed up society… I’m a teen going through puberty (who regularly looks forward to reading your blog for new posts (-: ) and was not overweight to begin with but wanted a flat stomach like the models I saw in ads and magazines.. I’ve learned my lesson the hard way by dieting and became obsessed with my weight and food intake which led to binges :-( any advice? thanks!

You have to think about what’s best for you and your health. Those women might look great for now, but what’s going on inside may not be the best for them long term. Read “Breaking Free From Emotional Eating” by Geneen Roth. Fabulous book.
