The Daughter of Marathoners

in Fitness, Lunch

Whenever I have it in my mind to run 6 miles, Mama Nature decides to rain on my [running] parade! Actually, there was a 100% chance of rain in the forecast for this morning, so I lucked out that it didn’t really start to rain until the halfway point.

Today’s rain had nothing on last week’s thunderstorm, that’s for sure! Running has taught me that I’m a lot tougher than I think I am.

I finished 6 miles and felt fabulous.

IMG_9874.jpg

My legs chugged along like there was no tomorrow…even while going up all the crazy hills! My mind kept saying I should stop and walk, but my legs just kept going and going.

It was probably because I was wearing my lucky shirt

marathonshirt.jpg

Okay, it was probably more like last night’s pecan sticky roll that helped in the energy department. Mmmm!

IMG_9844.jpg

Back to the shirt…

My mom wore this shirt when she ran the Marine Corps Marathon with Peter in 1998 (she took it off before these photos were taken).

She gave it to me a few years ago when I fell in love with running. I was saving the shirt to wear when I ran my own marathon, but who knows when that’ll happen?! I needed a shirt this morning!

IMG_9895.jpg

Have I ever told you the ‘rents ran a marathon? I was too young to appreciate it at the time. Long run days basically meant Lo the Bro and I could watch all the TV we wanted :) .

Home ALONE, baby!

Bye Momma and Poppa!! Have a great 15 mile run! Piano practicing ceases. TV is turned on immediately. Muahaha!

IMG_9889.jpg

I can’t exactly say seeing them cross the finish line motivated me to start running myself, since I didn’t actually get into it until many years later. It does make me want to run one someday though!

IMG_9892.jpg IMG_9891.jpg

Let the post-run grazing begin…

IMG_9876.jpg

In the mix:

  • 3/4 cup Frozen spinach
  • 3/4 Frozen banana
  • 1 packet Vega Tropical
  • 1 cup Almond Milk
  • 1 scoop Amazing Grass Lemon Lime
  • Water + ice

This was the last Vega Tropical packet I got from HLS. I’m head over heels in love with it! I need to go out and get some.

IMG_9883.jpgIMG_9880.jpg

Followed up by food, food and more food!

IMG_9791.jpgIMG_9902.jpg

Still grazing…

IMG_9904.jpg

Still good the next day!

IMG_9907.jpg

Still LoveStoned!

IMG_9911.jpg

Since the US Open tennis matches were on hold due to rain, I channel surfed and found a new to me channel, GAC (Great American Country).

Playing country music videos for hours!

IMG_9914.jpg

Colder Weather by Zac Brown Band. How appropriate given it is cold outside and I’m in long pants and long sleeves (!!).

Brrrrrrrr

IMG_9916.jpg

Okay, it’s time for this lass to get crackin’ on some work! Peace out.

Tell me: A goal you have on your “maybe someday” list.

That is a very pretty purple.

Nice polky dots, by the way. ;-)

Your smoothie looks like soft serve ice cream!

Awesome job on your 6 mile run, you rock!!

Random, but I saw on your twitter a few days ago that you thought about running a half marathon?! If so, you should TOTALLY come run the battleship half in Wilmington!! It should be amazing!! Just an idea :)

That’s the perfect weekend for me! Late enough that I can train properly, but not too late that I’m out of town. I was thinking of running the one in Raleigh that same weekend. I think Wilmington is a bit far though :(

4 Anna @ Food Fitness and Frolicking September 7, 2011 at 3:56 pm

If you’re referring to the city of oaks half..it’s WAY to hilly for me. I know Wilmington is a solid two hour drive but atleast we could run it together?

5 Allie September 7, 2011 at 4:00 pm

It’s hilly? Oh no! Well, it’s 7 hours from here. I’ll think about it. Would love to run it with you!

I’ve heard it’s SO hard, but maybe I’m wrong? And just as more incentive, I could show you some AWESOME restaurants here that I think you’d love!

Keep me updated! :)

A marathon is definitely on my “someday” list. Also, visiting the countries of my parents’ ancestry. I’ve already got China & England down…just France, Holland, Germany, and Ireland. Oh the perks of being a halfer ;)

I noticed your fingernail polish twice in this post, it should be renamed COOL 2010 polish! :)
So neat that you have your momma’s shirt! (and that the parents have run a marathon!) …. Way to run your 6 miles! You are doing awesome! GO ALLIE!
As for those pants, they make me want to call up the girls, pop some popcorn and pop in a chick flick!

I’m a daughter of marathoners too…….!

I know you tweeted a little while back that you were looking for a half in the DC area – did you decide on one??

Happy Training!

wow – your parents were hardcore! I love that you and your brother used to watch tv when your parents went out on their long runs haha. My sibs and I used to watch tv when my parents went grocery shopping or to run errands and when we heard the garage door open, we’d quickly turn it off and pretend like we’d been doing homework the whole time…

OMG, so cute! I say do it if you’d like, or not. But the lucky shirt might help you get there!

I wish my parents understood my marathoning.

I’m jealous of your running parents! I wish my parents would appreciate my running and fitness obsession. They’ve always brushed it off. I was trying to tell my mom about my 13 mile run on Monday morning, and she was like, “Uh huh, yeah, uh huh, so what time do you want to go shopping?” It’s funny. Kind of. One day you’ll run that marathon! Definitely start with a half, it’s much more comfortable and easier to train for. Once you have that under your belt, a full marathon will be much more achievable!

A) I LOVE your nails.
B) That green color is incredible. While at work today, my manager asked me to tell a few things about myself to my new team. One question was what would I want my last meal to be so I said a kale smoothie with a pb English muffin. They all said “ewwww”. I wish people would give healthy food a chance before instantly saying no!
C) Can you mail me a box of those pecan sticky rolls? Thanks.
D) I hope you’re having a fabulous week!!

Reply

35 Allie September 7, 2011 at 9:57 pm

Thanks, Kaci! You should make them all smoothies and have them try it! Works like a charm :) . The pecan sticky rolls are all in my belly (and Peter’s)! I hope you have a great rest of the week, too.

The rain actually caused my 6 mile run today! Thanks, rain! And I was also fueled by bakery carbs… :P

You have inspired me to get back into stocking spinach for smoothies like that one. Gorgeous :)

Allie,

I wanted to drop you a line and let you know that I’ve been creepin’ on your blog for a little while (scary…) and your breadmaking posts helped give me the courage to make my first loaf today! I blogged all about it over at screwedonstraight :) How have your adventures in breadmaking been going lately? I look forward to seeing another post from you on that subject!

47 Allie September 8, 2011 at 8:11 am

Hey Britt!!

Thanks for coming out commenting :) . I haven’t made my own loaf of bread in awhile. Not since I went to work at GH. I should get back on it (I’m still a little tired of bread!!). I think once our freezer stash runs out, I’ll start again.

Reply

48 Britt September 8, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Oh man, GH bread is so good, I don’t blame you! The closest one when I lived back down in the states was an hour away, and as far as I know there aren’t any up here in Canada. Our grocery stores all tend to have pretty elaborate bakeries (I think probably because of the prevalent French culture), but I haven’t found anything that I like as much as the Sunflower Whole Wheat!

Your parents are awesome! I bet they totally influenced you to run even if you didn’t realize it. Both my parents were big gym-goers, always weightlifting 3-4 times a week, and lo and behold I turned out the same way!

Reply

50 Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine September 8, 2011 at 9:12 am

That’s so cool about your parents, Allie! I don’t think you’ve ever mentioned that.

One of my life goals is just to do a marathon–any marathon! :)

Reply

51 Carol September 8, 2011 at 10:03 am

LOL! I laughed at the “piano practicing ceases. TV turns on immediately” because I did that too! I loved it when my parents went out so I could do whatever I wanted – even sneak some ice cream for breakfast. :P

BTW, that’s so awesome that your parents did a marathon together back then. Certainly you’ve got some running genes too. :)

Like most of your commenters, I want to run a marathon too. I just signed up for my first 1/2 marathon coming up in November. I’m kinda excited and scared at the same time. Excited that I’m going on a roadtrip with my best friend who’s also my running buddy, but scared that the run might kill me!
