Monday! Okay more like muuuuuundayyyyy. Merp. If I was in charge of the world, every Monday would be a holiday. Vote for me.
This weekend…
- I went out with my friend Camille for one last rendezvous. It was her final weekend here before returning home to Paris. Sad face.
- I was recognized by a blog reader/Trader Joe’s employee (hi Cassidy!). I was in the neighborhood, so I stopped in to pick up another box of GF waffles. I munched my way through the first box in record time (I got a box of Van’s GF waffles and they are not nearly as soft and pillowy. Plus, they’re $1 more and only contain 6 waffles in a box instead of 8 like TJ’s).

- I spent some quality time with Lo the Bro and the ‘rents.
Peter’s English is pretty good considering it’s his 3rd language. Sometimes, though, he leaves off the last syllable of words. For example, when we went to Dick’s Sporting Goods over the weekend…
This is a big Dick!

Yes, yes it is indeed a big one.
And an expensive one! Tempo shorts for $36?! No way, I pay $6 thankyouverymuch.

I fit in a couple HIIT workouts this past weekend, too. For the most part, I’m not very good about doing HIIT workouts. I read about the benefits of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts and speed intervals everywhere. I know it’s good for my muscles and overall fitness, yet I still tend to gravitate towards long, steady state cardio. What can I say? I like to zone out while exercising.
I try to throw in high intensity intervals while ellipticalling, but it’s awkward. I feel like a monkey. I’ve been trying to throw in speed intervals while running outside, but I always zone out too much and forget. In the perfect world, I’d be able to do HIIT workouts on the Stairmaster a couple times a week. It doesn’t take any mental effort—just crank up the speed and climb ’til you drop. Unfortunately, we do not have one of those at our community gym.
Anyways, after 2 long runs last week, I decided it was time to put the pedal to the metal.

Friday
I ran 6 miles outside with a sprinkle of some sprint intervals (7:00-ish min/mi for ~45 sec at a time). My legs felt heavy and the wind was fierce, so I knew a long steady run wasn’t in the cards.
The run left me gasping for air!

That night, Lo the Bro was over and it was one of those let’s-eat-chocolate-and-cookies-all-night-long-while-chatting nights.
All that carboloading fueled me up for an endurance Duke Basketball game workout on Saturday.

I broke my cardinal rule of not running on back-to-back days.
I had to use the treadmill so I could listen/watch the game and it’s just physically impossible for me to watch a Duke Basketball game at the gym and not be running.

What started as I’ll just jog slowly at an incline (hills?) turned into I’ll just run like 2 sprint intervals to a full on run. VA Tech and Duke were neck and neck for most of the game, I had to get my nervous energy out.
My legs felt great (no pain or soreness). I’m pretty sure my legs are strong enough now to handle 2 consecutive days of running once in awhile. Though, I’m taking two consecutive days off from running just to be safe.

In the end, my workout looked like this (running/walking all jumbled up):
- 45 min. run 6.6-8.0 mph, incline 1.5 (~5 miles)
- 40 min. incline walk 4.0-5.5 mph, incline 6.0-10.0 (~2.5 miles)
Much longer than anticipated because the game went overtime. Boy was I glad I brought this Vega Sport Endurance Bar with me to eat during halftime.

A few weeks ago, the people at Vega sent me a sampler of their new Vega Sport Performance System—100% plant-based and free of dairy, gluten, soy and contains no artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners.
The 3 stage system was formulated by professional Ironman triathlete Brendan Brazier to help manage inflammation and reduce recovery time between workouts by replenishing glycogen stores.

As you can see, I’ve made my way through most of the box. I am a big dork when it comes to the science behind fueling for workouts—before, during and after. I love learning about how the human body utilizes energy.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only are these products made with quality ingredients, they taste phenomenal. It was hard for me to ONLY consume them before/after workouts because I wanted to eat the bars for dessert!

When I say “quality ingredients,” I mean things like:
- sprouted whole grain brown rice protein
- pea protein
- alfafa protein
- pumpkin seed butter
- saviseed (sacha inchi seeds)
- sorghum crisps
- white chia seeds
Sounds funky, right? You’d think these products would taste funky, but I really mean it when I say they were delicious.
These recovery protein bars tasted like candy bars. This past weekend, I learned that Lo the Bro LOVES these bars and buys them by the box. So yes, we had a long conversation about Vega when he was here.

This is hands down the best protein powder I have ever tried. No funky/chalky flavor whatsoever. I will definitely be shelling out the $$ to buy a tub of this after I get through my current supply. For me, good quality protein powder that tastes good is worth the money.

I’m saving the gels for a future long run when I’ll need quality fuel to keep me going.

I can’t say for certain how they affected my performance since there are so many other factors to consider (previous workouts, diet, rest, stress, etc.). I felt good knowing I was getting quality protein and carbs in my body though. It’s hard to find clean energy bars and protein powders on the market.
Although I was sent this sampler by Vega, I was in no way obligated to write a review. I really do think these products are awesome and products I would/will spend money on in the near future.
Alrighty, it’s time for me to get my muuuuunday started. At least there’s The Bachelor to look forward to tonight! Have a good one.
Tell me…the highlight of your weekend.

I’m a huge fan of HIIT workouts- time well spent! I actually just posted about them!
Highlight of my weekend was running 32 minutes straight! And I am SO looking forward to The Bachelor tonight
I need to take a trip to Trader Joe’s soon so I’m thinking I’ll pick up some of their waffles! The highlight of my weekend was being lazy and catching up on all of my TV shows from last week. You just reminded me…I have yet to watch The Bachelor!
Haha, your “big dick” comment cracked me up! Glad you had a good weekend hun!
I had two chocolate coconut bars last night despite my skin’s total aversion to cocoa powder. The things I do for those delicious Vega bars!
Haha they’re crack! I need to order them online.
HIIT workouts on the elliptical makes me feel like a monkey too! haha couldn’t have said it better myself
Right?! I feel like a fool pulling and tugging on the handlebars.
I gotta say- I’m so jealous that Vega is sending their stuff to every blogger in the world (except me- their biggest fan!!) Their stuff is AH-MAZING.
The quote from Peter about Dick’s made me LAUGH! Thanks- I needed that on this Muuuuunday. And- uh- yeah, I’d totally vote for you!!
Oh! And who’s going home tonight?? Courtney? (I think not.)
YAY for quality family time! Isn’t that the best!
…..I was so stoked to get 3 pairs of Tempo shorts for Christmas! Blessing- I won’t look so gross when I wear them this summer, since I won’t be wearing the same two day after day.
Haha I wear my Spiderman tights on every run and I’m pretty sure the whole neighborhood knows it/smells it.
Wow, those Vega bars sound amazing!!! My parents just gave me a box of bars from Melaleuca which is supposed to improve my performance too and I can definitely relate to wanting to snack on them through the day! They are are a nice fudgy/caramel mix. What do the Vega bars use for sweetener?
Highlight of my weekend was definitely a variety show called Euphoria (my most recent blog post). It’s a competition between the 4 medical classes which raises $$$ for charity and my class won!!! Still completely elated over the show
.
That’s awesome, Rebekah!
Dick’s Sporting Goods is my Mecca. I can never come out of there without at least one pair of Tempo shorts, since they always have an assortment of like 354,049 different color options. TJ’s is my other love. When I pull up in the parking lot, I swear the building starts to glow and you can hear angels singing. Hahaa! Those protein bars sound pretty awesome. I totally believe in the power of plant based foods for optimal fuel. I’ll have to give those a try. I too will be tuning into the Bachelor tonight…I anticipate some drahhhmaaa….
My mom (of allll people) and I have a running joke surrounding Dick’s Sporting Goods. Every time we go, the dirty puns begin and don’t stop until we leave.
You have certainly been running those long mile runs so need the fuel! It seemed as though you were running daily but I guess you don’t run back to back days which maybe is the way to go since I find my legs getting tired so quality of runs might be better your way. I’ll try it. I was curious if you have tried SunWarrior protein powder and if you have how you would compare it to the vega protein powder. Just curious since they all are so pricy it is a bummer when you buy one or get stuck with one just because your afraid of getting a dud and stuck with feeling like you have to eat it since you paid so much
Yep, I only run ~3 days a week. I find it helps with injury prevention, motivation and energy. I’m just slow to blog about my runs, so it seems like it’s every day.
I just ordered SunWarrior thanks to an awesome deal (still need to blog about my thoughts). I’ve tried it a couple times and I do like it. I like Vega a lot better though!
So… related to your “that’s a big dick’s” comment… One Christmas I was at a family party. My mom’s siblings have a gift exchange every year amongst their siblings. One of the presents was wrapped in a Dick’s Sporting Goods box, and when the logo became visible, my Aunt Kathy (who is known as my most smart/quiet Aunt (there are 10 of them + spouses) shouts “Oh! I LOVE Dicks!” which definitely had everyone laughing.
Bahahaha!
I agree with shelling out money for a quality protein powder. I can’t get enough of Sunwarrior Vanilla!
The highlight of my weekend was moving to Omaha! It is so nice to have Whole Foods and TJ’s access whenever I want. Much more fitting to my lifestyle than the life in a town of 8,000! Can’t wait to get more involved around town!
Weee! Now go get some cookie butter!
Okay that comment that peter made totally cracked me up!!! Haha! Love it!
I don’t wear tempo shorts cause EVERY girl on campus wears them to death and I just haven’t been able to fall into the trend..but they are really functional since they don’t allow for underwear to be seen or anything. I’ve only seen them for $20 here, though. You’re lucky to get them for $6!
I’ve been trying to do more HIIT too! Lately I’ve been incorporating it into one of my runs per week by doing a 15 minute warm up, 15 minutes of sprints/recovery and 10 minutes cool down. It feels so good when I’m done!
Also, LOL at your dad’s comment!
Looks like you had a very busy weekend!
The Vega Sport products are so good. They sent me a box to try and I’m hooked on the bars. The chocolate coconut is my favorite. I also loved the chocolate protein powder. Which is interesting because I always buy vanilla. I definitely want to buy a tub of the chocolate now that I’m out.
Those were my two favorites too! That chocolate coconut bar is the BOMB! I, too, liked the chocolate protein powder the best. It made my smoothies so creamy.
I know you focused more on the Vega bars in this post, but I’ve been looking at watches for running/exercising, and I keep going back and forth between the Garmin 405 and 110. How do you like yours? Does the touch bezel ever give you trouble if you try to use it while running/sweating? I think that’s my biggest concern. Do you use the heart rate monitor as well? Sorry for all these questions, but I can’t decide!!
I love it! The bezel doesn’t give me trouble. Sometimes I tap it by accident and the screen switches, but then I just tap it again. You can lock the screen so it doesn’t change. I don’t really use my HRM. I did in the beginning but now I know pretty much my heart rate based on how I’m feeling. Though, I should probably start using it now that I’m running more…and for HIIT workouts. I liked using it on the elliptical because it made me more motivated.
I don’t know much about the 110, what are the differences between the two?
I have just recently discovered the wonders of Nike Tempo Shorts (SO much better than my old Soffes). I guess I need to hit up the outlets!
I’ve heard so much about those vega bars!! I totally would love to try them. Glad to hear you spent some nice time with your brother! Have a great week
HAAHAHAHAHA. Your dad is so funny & adorable
Oh, I haven’t tried Trader Joe’s waffles yet, but now I will! Yum!!
Sounds like a busy but fun and tasty weekend! I’ve heard nothing but great things about the Vega bars…
Highlight of my weekend: finding THE DRESS and saying YES
Woohoo!
AH! That was SUCH a stressful game!!! Of course I was rooting for VT (my alma mater) to pull off the upset, especially since we’re really not all that good this year. So crazy though!!!
Also, Peter cracks me up!
Highlight of my weekend: Registering for my wedding! It’s like getting to buy all the cool stuff you want without actually having to pay for it! …we may have gotten a little zapper-happy…
I love the Vega products!
I can’t even watch tv while running on a treadmill! Much less read a magazine!
I just discovered the Vega protein powder and I love it. I’m not sure about it being the best tasting protein powder out there (I prefer the Whole Foods brand of whey; vanilla), BUT the awesome nutritional numbers are worth it. Hardly any carbs and a whopping 25 grams of protein. It’s hard to find a “clean” protein powder with THAT much protein per serving. I just noticed though, the sodium is kind of high. I was bummed to recently find that out. Haven’t tried the bars yet…seems to have too much sugar.
I don’t shy away from sodium and sugar for post workout fuel because I need to replenish the salt from my sweat and if there’s any time I actually NEED sugar, it’s after a workout.
I live by intervals… I do enjoy the occasional long run to give my body a break and switch it up, but mainly stick to short intense workouts. I can’t wait to try these Vega bars!
This is partially YOUR fault! I am OBSESSED with the song, “Lights”, by Ellie Goulding. OBSESSED. I’ve played it at least 15 times over the last two days, most of which occurred when I was not exercising and sitting on my butt.
I need to get that one on my iPod before tomorrow’s run!
Could you interval folks please share what you do/your routine? I need a workout makeover and am trying to learn all I can. Thanks a bunch!
Hey Robyn! Here’s a good infographic for interval training. More information than you probably want, but it’ll hopefully help you out. http://www.greatist.com/fitness/interval-training-complete-guide/
Wow, this looks great. Thanks Allie!
I loved the day that I realized my body could handle back to back workouts. It made me feel like I had really accomplished something. I hadn’t really considered that to be a milestone, I just felt like a run even though I had ran the day before. Congratulation on your back to back!
