Pumping Protein

Last night, I tallied up the total # of miles I ran in February and it came out to….drum roll….

120 miles!

That’s 20 more than January’s total. Coincidentally, I ran the same number of days both months (13 days). By the way, how cool is this Nike ad?

171277592048406198_weAsnZ0B_f.jpg

It may seem like all my workouts are runs, but that’s because I don’t talk about my gym workouts (I only run ~3 days/week). I usually spend 20 min/day weight lifting, alternating between upper body and lower body workouts each day.

I love the way it makes makes me feel…strong!

IMG_0676.jpg

I’ve started to keep a mental tally of my protein intake just to make sure I get in enough for my muscles. I prefer not to have to count anything I’m eating, but I realized a few weeks ago that I was barely consuming the recommended amount of protein for the average sedentary person. Yikes.

I know protein recommendations are inflated and people in this country [in general] consume too much protein, but I know I was falling short for my activity level and had to start pumping some protein.

The thing is, I’m a carb queen and I tend to gravitate towards foods high in carbs. If I don’t make a conscious effort to consume protein, it’ll be granola, bread and waffles ALL the live long day.

What’s strange is that lately I’ve been craving meat/protein. Like, seriously craving it…and I’m not a huge meat eater. I’m a big believer in the fact that my body craves what it needs and I think my recent protein cravings are a result of my increased strength workouts.

This week, I’ve been eating turkey breast like it’s going out of fashion. I went through an entire pouch of turkey in one day and I’m not gonna lie, I felt a little like Taylor Lautner (the guy had to eat meat patties every 2 hours while training for his role in Twilight).

taylor-lautner-ab-workout.jpg

It hasn’t been a total meat fest over here though. Actually, my meat intake is still fairly low/moderate. I’ve been going through tubs of Greek yogurt and cartons of eggs.

I’ve also been putting Sunwarrior Protein Powder into my smoothies. I know I’m late on the Sunwarrior bandwagon. I finally found it on sale from Open Sky last week and snatched it up (I had a $12 credit for President’s Day, too. They totally got me!).

IMG_8254.jpg

Though I’ve heard wonderful things about this protein powder, I was a little bummed to find it tasted rather chalky. The nutritional stats are superb, so a little chalkiness is fine with me. I definitely think the Vega protein powder is better taste wise.

IMG_8259.jpg

On the days following my runs, I crave carbs like a crazy person. Yesterday, we said farewell to this bag of granola. RIP Cocoa Goodness. You didn’t stand a chance against my appetite.

You lived a short yet fulfilling life though. Thank you for getting me through all those miles!

IMG_0669.jpg

I’ve also been enjoying 2 3 4+ Lucy’s Cookies every night with decaf coffee for dessert. The assistant director of marketing at Lucy’s reads my blog and made a comment when she saw that I got a box at Homegoods last week. She offered to send over some samples of their new flavors.

IMG_8260.jpg

I enjoyed the box of Chocolate Chip I bought so much that I responded with an enthusiastic YES, PLEASE! After asking if she eats cookies all day long in the office, of course.

IMG_8268.jpg IMG_8269.jpg

These cookies are light, crispy and just melt in your mouth. I really love them and have to exercise some serious self control not to devour the entire box. Chocolate and Maple Bliss are divine, but my favorite is still Chocolate Chip.

IMG_8266.jpg

Okay, it’s time for me to put the cookies down (seriously, this morning’s pre-run breakfast) and get March started on the right FEET!

…MARCH!!

Tell me: Your favorite protein snacks.

I’m still searching for a race that isn’t more than the cost of a new pair of running shoes :) . Race entry fees…my goodness!!

You can do The Color Run – an easy (and FUN) 5k. They have runs all over the country. Good luck!

This race is so cool! Have you done it before? They’ll be in DC later this year. I’ll think about it.

Sunwarrior mixed in Greek yogurt is so delicious- and a protein bomb!

My favorite protein sources are almonds, eggs, and sun warrior – I have gone from not eating enough protein to probably eating far too much, but I don’t care – it’s delicious!

I felt the exact same way about Sunwarrior when I first started using it. But I bought a HUGE bag and told myself to get over it because I spent so much money. The more I used it, the more I began to love it. Now, I am obsessed with it mixed into smoothies and overnight oats. It really does grown on you.

Sorry, I got distracted by Taylor Lautner’s chest and abs and have no other comment.

13 clare @ fittingitallin March 1, 2012 at 2:00 pm

When I started doing more weight training I started craving protein..and MEAT too! It’s why I’m no longer vegetarian.

Also on the Sunwarrior, it’s a little chalky on it’s own, but GREAT in smoothies or baked goods! Just stick to the regular and not the warrior blend

Reply

14 Allie March 1, 2012 at 2:26 pm

I haven’t even tried it on it’s own. I put less than a scoop in my smoothie and it was still chalky. I don’t mind that much, but I had higher expectations given the hype. I’m excited to bake with it though.

Hopefully someday I can run as much as you :-p

I am also like you that I don’t eat enough protein at all so I am trying to find some sneaky ways to get more into my diet!

Lovely post :)

I saw that on Open Sky and thought about buying some- but since I’d never tried it I thought it would be kind of silly to spend that kind of money on something I wasn’t for sure that I’d like….. You are just rocking it on the running front…. WAY TO GO!

18 Justeen @ Blissful Baking March 1, 2012 at 2:51 pm

I’m in a similar boat – I eat carbs like there’s no tomorrow after my longer runs, but I’ve recently started craving meat too! I was at an Asian tapas restaurant over the weekend with some friends, and I found myself going for dishes with lamb and pork. It’s so weird because I’ve never been a big meat eater (I’m pretty much 100% vegetarian when I cook for myself), but I guess my body is craving the protein!

120 Miles!! Whoa!! And it was a SHORT month! You are awesome!
I’ve increased my protein dramatically this month. And it comes from pretty much every source possible- legumes, meats, seafood, eggs, dairy… and veggies! There are a lot of veggies that are protein-packed!
I have yet to try the Sun Warrior protein, but everyone raves about it. I have too many powders in my pantry right now- I need to make myself wait to buy any more. :)
BTW- if I organize some kind of blogger meet-up March 24 around DC would you be interested?

I totally forgot it was a short month :) . I am 99% sure I’ll be down in Cville that day. My friend is visiting for UVA Law’s admitted students day and I’m going to meet her down there.

Greek yogurt or string cheese is my favorite source of protein…I clearly like dairy!

Reply

24 Kaitlyn @trialandbalance March 1, 2012 at 4:12 pm

i was also let down by the taste of sunwarrior! if you don’t mind me asking, how many grams of protein do you shoot for per day?

Reply

25 Allie March 1, 2012 at 4:36 pm

I don’t really shoot for a specific number of grams/day. Some days I get in more protein than other days and that’s fine by me. I’m doing well consuming between 50-100g.

26 Katie March 1, 2012 at 4:27 pm

I am a sunwarrior addict! It’s a hit or miss for some people, I understand ; )

I am just the opposite of you! I don’t like carbs/sweets much and get sooooooo much protein everyday… probably because I am a total carnivore :) …my favorite protein snacks include cottage cheese, yogurt, and picking at leftovers from dinner the night before :P

You are running so much!!! I hope I can get out and run more when spring is here, when it’s not pitch black when I get home from work.

My go-to is always a Clif Bar. Pretty high protein and fiber content. It’s perfect about 1 to 2 hours before an intense workout. They’re a little heavy right before a run. If I’m heading out the door and I’m ravenous, I’ll eat a handful of almonds. That always holds me over.

I’ve been randomly eating Clif Bars this week. I think because I’ve been craving cookies and brownies :) .

I do like them. I haven’t gotten them in a long time though. They’re tasty…almost too tasty :) . My favorite flavors are: Chocolate Dipped Coconut (tastes like Samoa Girl Scout Cookies), Chocolate Peppermint Stick (even though I’m not usually a fan of peppermint in sweets), and Cookies ‘n’ Cream Delight. Keep in mind I’m allergic to PB, so those flavors might be good I just don’t know.

I’ve been using the natural Sun Warrior rice protein in my breakfast smoothies, haven’t tried the vanilla flavor yet. The next on my list is trying out hemp protein powder. The nutritional values surpass the ones of rice protein, but from what I’ve heard the taste is… well, not so good. :/
