Life is Like a Box of Cupcakes

in Dessert, Dinner, Peter's Kitchen

…you never know what deliciousness you’re gonna get.

Oh hi. Remember me? Long time no blog. How was your weekend? I had a fabulous one filled with good food and old friends. On Saturday, we had guests over at our house for a Peter’s Kitchen feast. My mom cooked up some of her favorite dishes, too.

The get together wasn’t really to celebrate my upcoming birthday, but it sorta worked out that way. Our guests just so happened to bring over cupcakes from the famous Georgetown Cupcake, even though they had no idea I’m growing 1 year older this week (eeps!).

Can you believe I’ve never had a Georgetown Cupcake before?! I’ve witnessed the long line at their store many times, but have never had the desire/patience to wait in it. I mean, the line runs out the door and around the block!

The last time I saw our guests, Evelyn, Kevin and their mom, was the summer after my freshmen year of high school! Our families took an Alaskan cruise together.

(Yes, I’m wearing flip flops in Alaska. Please ignore my awkward facial expression and turn your attention to Kevin’s pudgy little cheeks and his adorable bow tie.)

NOW look at these two munchkins 9 years later (!!!). One in college and one going to college this fall. OMGtimeflies.

IMG_8337.jpg

While digging through the photos from our cruise, I found this gem of Kat Lobes and me at the dinner table. We look so young!

Anyways, back to the cupcakes, which this lovely lady brought over for dessert.

IMG_8316.jpg

Flavors included (from left to right, top to bottom): Lava Fudge, Key Lime, Coconut, Chocolate Mint Crunch, Vanilla Birthday, Chocolate Ganache, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Birthday, PB Fudge, Vanilla, and Chocolate & Vanilla.

IMG_8319.jpg IMG_8320.jpg

You see that one with an orange flower? It’s Lava Fudge. Their ONE gluten free cupcake. Except I didn’t realize this until I visited their website LATER. Sadly, that cupcake had already been demolished.

Rats!!!! I guess that means I have to go to the store…

IMG_8322.jpg

I went with Salted Caramel. That one over there with the caramel drizzle. (See? Gluten still finds its way into my belly once in awhile).

IMG_8326.jpg

Looking at the menu, if I ever go to the store I hope it’s on a Wednesday because they have Carrot, Chocolate Hazelnut AND Cookies ‘n’ Cream that day.

I got a sugar high just typing all that out.

HOMPH!!

Before cupcakes, we had dinner.

Appetizers included a herring salad with GF brown rice crackers brought over by Lo the Bro.

IMG_8311.jpg

Adzuki bean soup with tapioca and rice balls made by mommy dearest.

IMG_8313.jpg

Then Peter worked his magic in the kitchen.

IMG_8355.jpg

On the menu:

Shrimp with red peppers and snow peas

IMG_8360.jpg

Salmon w/ a sweet soy sauce

IMG_8362.jpg

Asparagus

IMG_8364.jpg

Ribeye with tomatoes and onions. Peter made this dish earlier in the week and I went to town on it (TO TOWN!). He improvised the sauce by combining soy sauce, Worcestershire and sugar (and some other ingredients). The flavor was reminiscent of Korean BBQ.

IMG_8365.jpg

My mom made this savory rice cake stuffed with ground turkey, vegetables and an egg.

IMG_8366.jpg

Dig in!

IMG_8370.jpg

Did you notice my Duke Jersey? There was a Duke vs. UNC game, which we lost…badly. Womp womp. Bah humbug. It was a sad game. SO sad that I wasn’t even sad!

Really, it was that sad. We stunk. Moving on to the ACC Championships later this week.

IMG_8373.jpg

Dessert. Ohhhh dessert.

Dessert could’ve been a meal in itself. My mom made this adzuki bean rice cake.

IMG_8305.jpgIMG_8375.jpg IMG_8376.jpg

We enjoyed the above cupcakes and then later, a fruit tart (birthday cake) that Lo the Bro brought over. We were stuffed silly, but since this week is gonna be a little crazy, we figured we better sing happy birthday and make a birthday wish in case we don’t get around to it on the actual day.

I’ll save those photos for my birthday post later this week. Gotta enjoy the last 3 days of being 23 first.

Alrighty, it’s time to get this [birthday] week started.

Tell me: What birthday specials/freebies must I take advantage of this week?!

I’m entirely envious! I’ve never had a G-Town cupcake but I’m going to be in DC in a few weeks and I am making it a point to visit this monumental place! Glad it was a fantastic weekend Allie!

Those cupcakes look absolutely amazing! There`s a fancy cupcake place here, but I`ve never been to it. One of these days it`ll happen.

Happy birthday!

Are the Georgetwon cupcakes all the hype? I have had CRUMBS’ cupcakes which I think are amazing!

Reply

12 Allie March 5, 2012 at 2:52 pm

To be honest, I haven’t tried that many specialty cupcakes before. I tried a mini Crumbs cupcake last year but it went down too fast to really taste it :) .

I need to make a reservation at Peter’s Kitchen! ;)
Seriously- your dad is the most amazing cook ever. If I were you, I would never, ever move away from home. :)
I’ve never been to G-town Cupcake either, but looking at the list of flavors, I might have to go wait in that crazy line! Salted Caramel jumps right out at me
Enjoy the last few days of 23, young thing. Don’t worry- the next few years just keep getting better and better!

What’s the gift? I saw that when I Googled for birthday specials last night. Or is it a surprise?

I think it’s always the same (unless they change it annually?). It’s a philosophy body wash – http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P91103. It smells so good!

I’d love to know what’s in the herring salad. <3 herring. Does your brother ever read comments?

All that food looks amazing.

He bought it from whole foods. There was herring, mayonnaise, celery, onions, salt and pepper?

Ok, seriously, can your parents adopt me? Your family always makes the most DELICIOUS looking food! I grew up on hamburger helper and sloppy joes from a can… that just doesn’t compare. :)

But I am the same way – 19 years in Northern VA and I’ve never been to Georgetown Cupcake. When I worked in DC my office was only like 5 blocks away and I still never braved the line! I’ve heard amazing things though!!

Reply

25 Allie March 5, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Haha we had our fair share of Hamburger Helper and Lipton Rice meals from a bag! Of course, back then I preferred those meals over the good stuff my parents made. Oh how things change.

Where in Northern VA do you live? Feel free to email that info :)

Happy birthday week!

Hard to describe. The bean filling is sweet and nutty. The rice part is chewy. Kinda like mocha if you’ve tried that, but cakier.

I’m catching up on blogs so this comment comes late, but it’s nice to see all these chinese dishes on your table! I know exactly what you’re talking about with the adzuki bean dessert soup, and the savory/sweet rice cakes. Also really enjoyed the throwback pictures!
