Wednesday was National Running Day and I didn’t run (?!). I ran the day before and you know my golden rule for injury prevention. So I celebrated the holiday by taking the day off.
I made up for it yesterday with a nice 10 mile trail run. Though it was an asphalt trail, it was still pretty bumpy. Hence, the slower pace. Can you see the beads of sweat on my forehead?

Due to my work schedule, I had to run during the hottest time of the day. Luckily, the trail was pretty shaded. These photos were taken last December when I first discovered the trail…and the fake blue heron. It was definitely greener and sunnier yesterday.

I keep getting questions about my running gear, specifically compression sleeves/socks. It’s about time I updated you on what I’m wearing while pounding the pavement.

These days, 99.9% of my purchases consist of food, food, more food and running gear. What I save in race fees goes towards my belly and my feet.
Running Shoes
Up until last fall, I was used to buying new running shoes just once a year. Why? Because I used to run for a few months, feel pain, stop for a few months, start running again, yadda yadda. So in the past it took me about a year to run 350-400 miles (you can read more about my running journey here).
Nowadays, I run through a pair in less than 3 months…before they even get dirty! Running shoes are expensive, but you know me…I scour the internet for good deals.
I never, I repeat never, buy running shoes at full price. You shouldn’t either!!

The running shoes my feet/legs love the most are Asics Gel-Kayanos (they’re a stability shoe and I have low arches).
I was going to get a 3rd identical pair of turquoise Gel Kayano 17s a few months ago after maxing out the first 2, but I waited a few days to decide and my size sold out (grrrr!). Learn from my mistake, folks. Don’t wait to snag your shoes if you find them on clearance.

So I had to get the new, slightly pricier [hot pink] Gel Kayano 18s. I got a few discounts that helped lessen the blow.
- 20% off with VIP membership ($1.99 first time membership fee) at Road Runner Sports
- Free Shipping
- 8% cash back through eBates <–huge!

The old pairs still have plenty of cross-training life left in them. When I switch over to a new pair of running shoes, I start using my old pair as walking/gym shoes. They get A LOT of use that way and practically become trash shoes by the time I’m done.
CEP Pink Compression Socks

I’d been meaning to get a pair of compression socks since my Zensah Compression Leg Sleeves helped me so much. I got these CEP Compression Socks from Road Runner Sports when I bought my shoes, so I got 20% off and 8% cash back through eBates. I just chose a brand that seemed like it knew what it was talking about.
I’ve worn them on every single run since getting them about a month ago. Sometimes I wear my Zensah sleeves underneath these socks during my runs and I always wear the socks to bed on the days I run. I like that they’re ventilated, so my legs don’t get sweaty at all. Though the attractive tan line under my knee is another story.
I know the way my legs feel depends on a slew of other factors (fuel, rest, weather, hydration, etc), but I really think they’ve helped my legs both during and in between runs.
To continue the pink trend…
Under Armour Hot Pink Compression Shorts (from Marshalls)
I still wear my CW-X Compression Shorts for just about every single run (best $20 I’ve ever spent), but sometimes, I wear this beauty to bed after a long run.

That’s it for now. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Friday Giveaway: NuNaturals Stevia
NuNaturals has come out with two new products: Lemon & Orange Flavored Stevia Liquids. I use stevia to sweeten my coffee and other beverages. I actually started purchasing the NuNaturals brand exclusively after trying it over two years ago. I think it is superior in taste compared to other brands.
I especially like the lemon flavor for making lemonade!

NuNaturals is giving 4 lucky readers 1 bottle of each (lemon and orange). Disclaimer: I was sent these bottles for free by the company to review and giveaway. As always, all opinions are my own.

I want… more American products to be available to Canadians without a) huge mark-ups or b) crazy shipping! There are so many things I want to try but can’t bring myself to pay shipping for ha!
Paying for shipping kills me. That and sales tax!
I tweeted about your giveaway
I shared the link on Facebook
First triathlon of the season is tomorrow!
Planning on 2 farmers markets, strawberry picking, and flea marketing this weekend! Hope the weather is nice for you as well!
This weekend will not really be a weekend for me because i’ve got LOADS of studying for exams!! I’ll be book worm for the next 1-2 weeks..)= When I go running I prefer wearing shorts with my favorite neon l scauney shoes. I have never tried Nunaturals before but have always wanted to and would love to get some!!!
BTW, I love your blog and enjoying reading every one of your posts!! =D
Thanks, Jasmine! Oof studying. You and me both.
just tweeted your giveaway!
Facebooked your awesome giveaway!!
I really need to buy new running shoes!! I’m saving up some mulah to get fitted for ones that are intended for my arch
I’m looking forward to a nice run and work out tomorrow, maybe catching MIB 3, and spending time with my family!
I have been wanting to try the new stevia flavors for a while now! I really want to make lemon poppy seed muffins with the lemon kind!
Best idea ever!! I need to get some poppy seeds.
I love that hot pink color. So powerful !
I’ve always wanted to try NuNaturals. At the moment I’m using agave to sweeten my foods.
I just so happen to have been playing with the Runner’s World shoe finder right before reading this post. It’s been just about a year since I bought my current pair (since I’ve had the on again off again injury). I’m thinking compression socks might be a smart purchase too!
I’m trying to eat less sugar so this stuff would be great to experiment with. What a great idea to flavor stevia!
Tomorrow’s my 25th birthday so I’m being taken out to dinner. I like using liquid stevia in my coffee. The fruity flavors would be fun to try too. I’m a newbie to the blog and I’m enjoying reading your posts. Your running journey is impressive and inspiring!
Happy Birthday, Christina!!!
going to my little brother’s graduation party tomorrow!
I want school to be over! We still have 2 weeks and these are going to be the most painful weeks I’ve had all year. Winning some wonderful Stevia would help me get through this final push!
i love nunaturals stevia! i’ve yet to try these flavors though!
I teach Middle School and summer break is officially here and my weekend is packed with fun things: celebrating Father’s Day at my parents’ house, baking for and attending a pot luck with my swim team, going to a baby shower, and meeting a friend for drinks to celebrate her impending move to Germany. You know what I’m NOT doing? GRADING. Booyah!
My mom has a membership on Road Runner Sports so I often have her order my shoes for me.
They’re discounts usually save a ton of money!
I’m a recent stevia convert… and I haven’t even tried the flavored kinds yet! I need to change that…
The Orange flavored NuNaturals is amazing! I know it sounds weird, but I always add it to plain Greek yogurt with instant white chocolate pudding mix mixed into it for dessert…the consistency is way better (and thicker) than regular pudding, and it tastes like an orange julius!
Nunaturals is the best, I would love to try out the new flavors. And I’m new to ebates but the cash back thing is super awesome already
. Cute gear!
I’m running with my favorite running buddies in the morning, and will definitely be sporting my pink compression socks!!! I wear my compression socks/sleeves all the time now lol

I’ll be spending the weekend at work unfortunately, but I plan to fit in some gardening and long walks with the dog! Lemon Stevia would be amazing in iced tea!
I’d love to try NuNaturals! I am trying to reduce my sugar intake, but still little something to sweeten up drinks.
And I recently bought a pair of compression socks and they make such a big difference in how my legs feel after a run!
this looks amazing!! i haven’t been able to find nunaturals anywhere and i am dying to try it!
I have always wanted to try NuNaturals!
it’s my niece’s baptism this weekend so i’ll be heading home for that!!
I love NuNaturals! I made some lemon blueberry pancakes the other weekend with it and they turned out fantastic!!
Also, I really want to get my hands on some compression socks (and new running shoes for that matter)!!
I’m working all weekend, unfortunately. But I just got my Garmin FR410 in the mail so I’m excited to try it out!
i have the same exact hot pink compression socks and they made a HUGE difference in soreness/recovery during my marathon training!
I’ve been dying to try these!! This weekend I’m celebrating one of my good friends birthdays! And getting my hair done as well.
I’m hoping that the weather is nice this weekend so I can go swimming! I wouldn’t be too disappointed if it rains though because my garden loves the rain.
I LOVE NuNaturals!

I really want to try compression socks soon. I’ve heard they really help with recovery, I just have trouble with the idea of spending so much on one pair of socks! ha!
i have to work this weekend. oh well, it pays the bills.

I plan on relaxing this weekend and getting in a long run and maybe some yoga!
Ive never dished out the money for nunaturals drops, but would love to try them!
wow, I wouldn’t be able to afford a new pair of running shoes every few months if i ran at your pace :/ i’m still trying to wear out my running shoes that I’ve had for years — i only used them at the gym before, and didn’t go to the gym that often to be honest, but now that i’m running outside more, i’m sure they’ll be wearing out this year.
can you explain to me exactly what compression shorts/sleeves do and how you compare your runs with different kinds (how do you know which are better than others, or do the results differ from person to person)? thanks!
What I know about compression gear I’ve learned through googling. They’re supposed to help with recovery by increasing blood/oxygen flow. Some say it works and some say it doesn’t. Here’s an article from science of running: http://www.scienceofrunning.com/2010/07/compression-socks.html. A running times article: http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=13830. The CEP site (of course they’ll say it works!): http://www.cepcompression.com/1928-Running-Compression-Socks.aspx
I hope this helps!
i finally ordered a HRM so this time next week i’ll be training for my 5k and actually know my stats!!
Tomorrow I will be in the shade cooking Thai food and Sunday I have a 5 mile run with an old beau
i tweeted the giveaway!
I need to buy a pair of compression socks. I really need help with muscle recovery!
i hope to run some double digits this weekend! hopefully it doesn’t get too hot.
Love these running shoes, need to find something similar
I love NuNaturals Stevia.. The lemon kind would be great in iced tea!! Yum!!

I’ve been dying to try these. I love maple syrup, but bottles of that stuff disappear in a minute.
Hopefully checking out DC Pride celebrations this weekend!

I just think it’s worth mentioning that sometimes finding the best discount isn’t all you should consider when purchasing something like running shoes. My family owns running specialty stores where we watch peoples gait, alignment, foot type, etc. prior to selecting a shoe to maximize comfort and prevent injury…something that the internet will never be able to do. Cheap internet deals really impact our business and the businesses of many other “local” or family owned stores. In my opinion, supporting local, small businesses and your own community is so more beneficial and rewarding in the long run than saving some money by internet shopping.
Thanks for your comment, Ali! I try to visit my local running store for certain products, especially if I need to talk to someone about them.
I’m a stevia girl
We’re headed out for a nice long country walk soon, then I’m going to do the last workout of Week 2 of the Live Fit Trainer. Woo! Can’t believe I’ve been at it for two weeks already!
I tweeted about this
I’m @fitformyfork.
I”m going to a sushi making party tonight!!
I’m sure you’d be welcome to come if you lived anywhere near here, but I think VA to LA is a bit of a ways to drive for sushi.
OOPS!! I forgot to say thank you for hosting this giveaway!!
Fun!! Jealous! I wanna come.
stevia is definitely my sweetener of choice since i can’t have sugar right now.. i find that it works okay in almost any substitution.
There will be a LOT of mowing to be done today. The grass is sky high because of the past rainy weekend – so I’ll count that as my workout.
LOVE NuNaturals! I can’t talk enough about the wonders of compression sleeves….love Zensah!
my favorite piece of workout gear is my pair of Skins compression sleeves….they help with recovery sooooo much!
just loving all the pink stuff!! so cute
I just got a new pair of kicks–the Mizuno Precision 12–and did my first run in them this morning. Super cute and comfy!!
I currently use powdered stevia and have never tried the liquids. I would LOVE to try the lemon AND orange–I drink lots of iced tea so these would be perfect!!

We have a big family BBQ planned to celebrate my Father In Law’s 70th birthday! So excited to spend time with the family!
I love the color of your turquoise running shoes!
I have the exact same shoes. I’ve been wearing only Asics for probably about 5 years now. I’m on my second pair of the 18s. All the girls that worked with my physical therapist always gave me a ton of compliments. I couldn’t believe how light they were when I got my first pair. I also think it’s funny that you need stability shoes for a flat arch because I need them for an extremely high arch, lol.
They ARE super light. I think I prefer the 17s, actually. Did you ever run in those?
Yes, I had a pair of the 17s before the 18s. Actually, those were the exact same color as yours too, haha. My foot definitely felt better in them (I’ve been getting heal pain in my 18s, but it’s hard to say for sure if it’s the shoe). My only complaint about the 17s was I thought they wore out really fast! I had a really hard time debating between another pair of the 18s or going back to the good ol’ 17s.
Hi Allie! I LOVE your blog! I’m a big runner too, I’m loving reading through your posts!
Im in desperate need of new running shoes too, definitely going to check out those Asics, I’ve been a loyal mizuno fan but I’m not loving my newest pair!
Thanks, Kristina! I’ve always been curious about Mizunos. I’m nervous to try them though in case I don’t like them. Maybe if my Asics start failing me one day…
Do you like the CEP socks better than the zensah sleeves? I feel like my zensah’s are loosening up a bit and I’m in the market for new ones.
I’m not really sure. Terrible answer, I know. My Zensah sleeves have loosened up too (I don’t wash them enough…they tighten up after I wash them), so it’s hard to tell. The CEP socks are always tight no matter what. I need to experiment more with wearing one at a time.
I’m having my friends over for a dinner party tonight! (:
Making lemonade with the NuNaturals sounds like an awesome idea!!
My sweetner of choice is Stevia!
I’m moving this weekend (finally!) Excited to be unpacked and settled in my new place
I’m currently washing a load of laundry!
Hahahaha I said whatever you want, right? I should do that too…
My doctor wants me to reduce my sugar intake, so I started using stevia packets in my coffee and tea (which tastes okay, not great). I also bought a big bag for baking, but I’ve been really disappointed so far with that. Almost everything I’ve baked with it so far has been inedible
I think it only really works in recipes that don’t call for a lot of sugar to begin with. I don’t know how the liquid stevia would be for baking–I wouldn’t expect it to function as a sugar replacement there–but I bet it’s *delicious* in tea!
I haven’t had much success with stevia baking blends. I have used liquid and even pure stevia, and the end result is better. I literally just baked with erythritol (less than 10 min. ago), and I think it tastes a lot better. Obviously, I already dug in
. I definitely think it’s an acquired taste. Have you tried baking with dates/date paste? It’s still sugar, but better than the simple stuff.
Oooooo, I haven’t tried dates or date paste yet–what a great idea! And thanks for the other baking tips; I’ll be sure to do some experimenting
What drives u to get up and out to run each time? I love running too but recently, I got bored of it and all I want to do is just eat! Which is really unfair to my body. What are your motivations that keep u going?
This is gonna sound really annoying, but I rarely struggle with motivation when it comes to running. Most of the time I have to hold myself back. Okay, some days I struggle to get out the door, but because I KNOW I’ll feel 80000x better after running for even just a mile, I just go. I think running every other day (or two days) helps. If I ran every single day, I’d probably get bored.
New music is always a great motivator. Even just one new song.
Love those sneaks!
NuNaturals Stevia is my sweetener of choice; however, I typically use the small packets that I buy in bulk at Iherb.com love stevia and would love to try the lemon and orange flavors!
I’ve been itching to try Stevia, but there’s a huge box of 1000 packets of Splenda I bought from Costco so I’ve been working to finish that first.
i plan to have a lazyyy weekend
i’ve become obsessed with under armour ever since you first posted about their compression tights. love love them. they take away a lot of the swelling that i get and significantly shortens recovery time!
Woohoo! Some people don’t believe in compression gear, but I totally do.
How do you like your new compression socks compared to the Zensah sleeves? I just bought the Zensah sleeves (because of your recommendation!) & so far I’m digging them!
I’m not really sure. Terrible answer, I know. My Zensah sleeves have loosened (I don’t wash them enough…they tighten up after I wash them), so it’s hard to tell. The CEP socks are always tight no matter what. I need to experiment more with wearing one at a time. Glad you like them so far!
love all the HOT pink!
I need new running gear!!!! You look great and sounds like the running suits you perfectly! Amazing!!
Couldn’t agree more on paying whole price on running shoes!
Going to go to lunch with the mother and celebrate my brothers bday (and job search)

oooh I’ve always wanted to try stevia!
I really like the Vanilla NuNaturals – would love to try the other flavors!
Since I can no longer eat sugar, stevia is my sweetener of choice! I’d really love to win this giveaway
I am transitioning from splenda to stevia and would love to try these. Thank you for hosting this giveaway. We finally have sun in Maine for a couple of days so I am really enjoying this weather–sunny and 70′s. Summer in Maine cannot be beat!
workout gear! i’m obsessed with my mizuno wave riders, and lately i’ve also been really loving my old navy compression capris to run in–they’re nice and light!
Tomorrow’s plan: Sushi for lunch with the girls, followed by the Jazz/Blues festival in the city.
I love summertime in Chicago =)
I LOVE NuNaturals, and these flavors sounds fantastic – perfect for the summer! Keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks, Allie!

I’m actually running out of my vanilla flavored NuNaturals stevia extract. I like to add it to plain greek yogurt.
P.S. It was really cool seeing you in-person that one time where I work at the Trader Joe’s in Reston, VA.
I might go ice skating with friends tonight! Good chance to get out of the heat
Love the new shoes! I’m just learning how important it is to switch out your running shoes. I’m a newbie to running…I also need to invest in compression socks…so much to learn about running. Lol.

My weekend was fabulous, because I finally hit my first 60 mile week ever! Also, Sunday morning yoga at lululemon isn’t too shabby either
Studying for my MCAT today! Whooo! Lemonade would be a nice change from all the coffee
I want to try Nunaturals Stevia! I’ve been looking for it everywhere!
I have those compression sleeves too! I love them!

Going to try an Airobics class this coming weekend! [Trampolining Aerobics]
Pick me! I plan on doing a quick run!
I would love to be able to shop online and have items sent to Canada without customs and brokerage fees and outrageous shipping costs, too.

What do you do with your old running shoes once you dont want them for anything at all? Do you throw them away?
Oh gosh no! I wear my running shoes until they have holes in them. I actually still have pairs from 5+ years ago that I still wear. I usually switch them over to walking/gym/everyday shoes.
Love the hot pink Under Armour compression shorts. And your choice of kicks. I live in Bloomington, where we’re lucky enough to have The Running Company. It’s a hard core runner’s supply shop, offering custom made sneakers. You run on a track in the store and they observe your pronation and what have you. Very intense. Average low end custom kicks start at a buck fifty. I never go on my morning run during spring and summer without my Kate Spade cordelia shades. Yes, I’m that girl, jogging with designer shades on! I used to feel snooty, but after seeing your compression shorts, I feel inspired and validated!
Haha!! I’ve never worn those pink shorts outside alone. I’m not that brave! I usually wear shorts or leggings over them.
